GW21 review

A green arrow up to 925 overall rank. The first time I’ve finished a week inside the top 1k.

Another 2 goals for Thiago and an assist for Schade; between them they have returned me just under 18 points per GW in the last 4. They have certainly helped the rank rise. Arsenal returned to keeping clean sheets, Haaland scored a pen and a bizarre performance from Michael Keane who scored a goal and then got himself sent off. He was on 15 points at one stage and I also had Anderson with his 7 points subbing in for O’Reilly, but then a City substitution and a bit of hair pulling changed all that. A small green arrow though regardless.

GW22:

I have been pleased with the break and a chance to have a think about the next few GW’s.

I think it is best to start by saying that I am probably rolling the transfer this week and then explain my reasons why.

I have had time to look at my team and players I potentially want over the next few GW’s.

These are: Bruno Fernandes, Cole Palmer and/or Enzo Fernandes, Trevoh Chalobah and possibly Daniel Munoz or another Palace defender. The Chelsea assets because of their run from GW24 in particular, Munoz for the GW26/27 fixtures (but I’ll be watching Palace’s form which has been poor recently. At least they don’t have the FA Cup to worry about now) and Bruno Fernandes because he has so many routes to points and hopefully will be playing in a more attacking position going forward.

Most of these moves will require freeing up funds from elsewhere and that will probably be by selling Hugo Ekitike. I don’t want to sell him before Burnley if he is fit so that is one reason for rolling the transfer this week. I could sell Cunha down to Enzo but I think I’d like another week at least to see how the new Chelsea manager sets up before I decide if I want Palmer, Enzo or both.

I would have 4FT’s in GW24 for the Chelsea fixture run but one of those FT’s will be required to downgrade Ekitike, so I could bring in 3 of the players on my list. That would almost certainly be Bruno Fernandes and 2 of the Chelsea’s assets. Munoz or a Palace defender could wait another week or two if I think I want one of them. I would probably start making moves in GW23 when Cunha is away at Arsenal.

My team wouldn’t look ideal this week. 9 of my 11 would be playing away from home. I would have Cunha up against my City assets and I’d be playing 2 Brentford attackers away at Chelsea. I could sell Cunha this week for a 2 week punt but it’s a transfer I can ill afford if I don’t intend to play the WC in the next few weeks. I haven’t given the WC much thought but my instinct is that is too early for me to play it however, there are other players such as Morgan Rogers who I’d be interested in. I would also rather have Gabriel and Timber as my Arsenal defenders and a cheaper keeper. I think I can get near to the team I want with FT’s and maybe the odd hit so I’ll be holding onto the WC for now but it could change in the next couple of GW’s.

The other thing to bear in mind when planning transfers 3 or 4 GW’s ahead, aside from injuries and suspensions, is price changes. They are much more volatile this season so if you are mapping out some moves for future GW’s make sure you build in some headroom to account for price rises and drops. Foden and Gabriel moved £0.5/£0.6m in a couple of GW’s.

This all assumed that Ekitike is fit which he proved with his cameo off the bench in the FA Cup.

I am not expecting a green arrow this week but hoping that my decision to roll to 3 FT’s pays off down the line.

Captain will be Haaland and vice Ekitike. I’ll be playing a 3-4-3. I’m still to decide between O’Reilly and Andersen for the bench.

Transfer summary: likely carrying over the free transfer

GW21 Review

Another positive week as my climb continues. It’s now 12 consecutive green arrows and 16 in the last 17 gameweeks. I’m fully expecting some sort of red soon as this can’t continue.

Bruno G was the hero again with 11 points – his 3rd double digit return in a row since I brought in. Thiago’s brace was the other main rank driver as well as double Arsenal defence finally coming in. It could have been even better if Keane had decided not to be an idiot and get sent off after scoring.

Gameweek 21 review:

It was a drama filled midweek gameweek before the break for the FA Cup. A seven goal thriller at St James Park, with a third successive double figure haul from Bruno G, Thiago followed up his hat trick with a brace, two red cards for the Toffees, a fairytale Cherries send off for Semenyo, storm Goretti swept in and the robot ended his drought from the spot.

Arsenal are now six points clear at the top after a tense 0-0 draw with Liverpool at a very wet Emirates stadium. An Erling Haaland penalty wasn’t enough as Man City stuttered to their third successive draw, 1-1 v Brighton. And third placed Villa were held too as it finished goalless at Crystal Palace. So draws for the top four with Liverpool getting that point at Arsenal.

Brentford are up to 5th after a Thiago double helped them beat Sunderland 3-0 with Kelleher saving a Le Fee penalty. A candidate for game of the season as a Harvey Barnes goal in the 12th minute of stoppage time saw them come from behind to beat Leeds 4-3. And Bruno Fernandes was back for Man Utd but a Sesko brace was only good enough for a 2-2 draw at Burnley.

Elsewhere, Semenyo was the departing hero as his 95th minute winner saw Bournemouth beat Spurs 3-2. Michael Keane scored but was sent off along with Grealish as Everton finished with nine men in a 1-1 draw v Wolves. Cucurella also saw red as a Harry Wilson winner sealed a 2-1 win for Fulham over Chelsea. And Forest won a relegation six pointer as an 89th minute Gibbs White pen saw them beat West Ham 2-1.

My GW21 score and rank:

I had FIVE returners in a score of 59 points, which was 11 points above the overall average and 7 points above the benchmark elite manager average, so that’s a decent week.

A 13 point return from budget keeper Kelleher, a Harry Wilson goal, a penalty for captain Haaland and a double Arsenal clean sheet from Gabriel and Timber.

Only a modest rank rise, due to some hefty hauls from my biggest rank threats, but up from 1.7M to 1.6M.

My GW21 significant moments:

I decided I wanted Gabriel in my team after his back to back goals on his return from injury. He’s obviously not going to score every week but I wanted to optimise my three Arsenal players that didn’t include Gabriel, who looks pretty essential as the best defender in the game. I needed to commit two precious transfers though to get him. I couldn’t get Gabriel in one move.

One option was Timber to Gabriel and keeping Raya. I would possibly have done Van Dijk to Thiaw or O’Reilly to fund it which didn’t work out. Or Gravenberch to a very cheap mid, and kept Van Dijk, which would have gone better, especially with Virgil keeping an unexpected clean sheet at Arsenal and I’d still have had him for Burnley this week too.

But I feared making the switch and Timber hauling and the move backfiring. I decided I wanted BOTH Gabriel and Timber for a more attacking Arsenal triple up, so downgraded Raya and moved Van Dijk to Gabriel. It was disappointing that Virgil picked his clean sheet up in a tough game and matched Timber but I at least got lucky with the funding keeper move.

The obvious Raya replacement for me was Sanchez with Chelsea’s good run of fixtures but he was an injury doubt so I looked elsewhere. I considered all of Roefs, Pope and Verbruggen but settled on Kelleher, partly due to his budget price. He kept a clean sheet, saved a penalty and landed 13 points !!

I don’t expect Kelleher to match Raya going forward, but he’s 1.5M cheaper and offers better value. I’m banking on Timber and Gabriel both outscoring Van Dijk due to their greater attacking threat, and Timber delivering more for his price than Raya in an optimal attacking triple up of Saka, Timber and Gabriel.

The double Arsenal clean sheet was due, only their 3rd in 11 games, which has impeded my progress in recent weeks. They have the best defensive data and top the clean sheet odds most weeks. If Gabriel and Timber can chuck attacking returns in there too, the haul potential is there. Timber has zero goals and only two assists since I bought him in GW8 so maybe he was disposable but he regularly appears in the box and always carries a threat.

Harry Wilson was extremely unlucky to not have had a brace v Chelsea, after a goal which was ruled out for the finest of VAR calls. That disallowed effort and his later winning goal were both fantastic strikes. He’s not a “data pick” but he passes the eye test, and continues to impress me. He’s in great form, and I’m happy to own him. A double return in the cup too at the weekend.

Haaland’s goal was largely irrelevant due to his sky high ownership and captaincy but team mate Foden now has five successive blanks after a whopping 55 points in his previous four games. My plan is to hold him for Man Utd and Wolves and then review.

The obvious elephant in the room is the transfer of Thiago to Ekitike in GW18 which has hugely backfired. Ekitike was injured and missed the Arsenal game, he’s had one assist in four games, while Thiago has just scored five goals in two games !! It’s been a transfer disaster really.

But at the time of the transfer, Thiago hadn’t scored for four games, which extended to six games in GW20, Isak had just broken his leg and Ekitike was the main guy, in great form and faced Wolves, Leeds and Burnley, all at home, in his next five games. It was a very logical transfer on paper.

There was a route to get Ekitike and keep Thiago, which involved not buying Cunha, which has proved a great option. But again, buying Cunha for the same fixtures of Wolves, Leeds and Burnley in consecutive games was a solid play. Cunha has only delivered one goal in four games since I bought him. Doubling up by getting Dalot too for those three great fixtures has brought three blanks. Nothing from Cunha or Dalot v Burnley this week was very disappointing.

My green arrow would have been a bigger one, but four of my five biggest five rank threats all hauled at the same time on high ownership – Thiago, Semenyo, Guehi and Bruno Guimares. Brutal points against me and it meant only a 6% green arrow this week when it might have been a lot more.

But ultimately, the Kelleher penalty save to cement his clean sheet was the much needed slice of luck I needed that defined my gameweek.

So what next ??

After four quick fire deadlines in just eleven days, the break is very welcome. It’s been an intense period of FPL. Time to unwind, chill out and watch some domestic cup football instead.

We’ve had the FA Cup 3rd round at the weekend, which is always an iconic part of the football calendar for us older generation romantics. Especially so for me as a Barnsley season ticket holder with an away trip to Liverpool !! The amazing result of the weekend was holders Crystal Palace going out to sixth tier Macclesfield !!

As well as the FA Cup, we’ve now got the League Cup semi finals too midweek, where full strength teams are probably expected after plenty teams rested key players in the FA Cup. Some great games to watch, without the FPL frustration of clean sheet wipeouts, missed chances and counting those Defcon points.

The outcome of the League cup games will also give us a greater idea of which teams are likely to have “blank and double gameweeks” soon, due to the final clashing with league fixtures, which will also impact when we look to use our second set of “Chips” like wildcards and free hits.

Looking at transfer activity so far, Thiago is the popular top buy on the back of five goals in two games. Gabriel, Bruno G, Wilson and Rice are also being heavily bought.

Foden’s string of blanks have seen him shipped out in big numbers. Ekitike is being sold too after his injury, but he was back in the FA Cup and he now plays Burnley !! Gvardiol, Cunha and Semenyo are being sold too, the latter having just moved from Bournemouth to Man City. It will be interesting to see if he hits the ground running at a bigger club.
