Gameweek 2 was a disappointing one. Seeing so many elite managers sail past 100 points stung a bit. Contributing to that was my decision to play White over Calafiori and not doubling up on Arsenal’s defence. I left Tarkowski’s goal on the bench, but I was never going to play him anyway, instead opting for Maguire at home. At least he got an assist.

Moving on to Gameweek 3, I was tempted to use my two free transfers to bring Haaland back in and play the TC on him, but with Ndiaye now moving to City, that route became less likely as I’d have three City players already. So I’ve stuck to the original plan and activated the Wildcard. I feel the team I’ve built is pretty strong for the next few weeks. Palmer passes the eye test so far and I think he’s going to come back to his best this season. MGW is another player I feel will shine under Glasner, so he’s in. Having at least two Arsenal defenders is a must, Konsa is a great price, Szoboszlai is a solid pick, and Sangare at Brentford offers good value.

The team is obviously subject to change leading up to the deadline just in case of injuries, but Haaland takes the armband this week for the home game against Coventry. Good luck all.

Transfer summary: Wildcard activated

GW2 review

GW2 brought 91 points against an average of 81, but the headline needs context. The stronger benchmark I compare against was much higher, and I finished last in that group.

Bruno Fernandes was the big success. After returning two points in GW1, he delivered 23 this time, doubled to 46 as captain. Keeping the armband was fully vindicated. Tarkowski’s 12 points also justified the settled defensive pick, while João Pedro’s nine and Gabriel’s eight helped build the total.

The structural gap came from Haaland and Calafiori. Both returned, and both were players the template carried that I deliberately left out. That cost me this week, but it was a consequence of the structure I chose rather than a mistake in executing the plan.

The one call I did get wrong was benching Gibbs-White because of the ankle caution. He scored 13 while McBurnie returned one, leaving 12 net points on the bench. I own that decision. Gibbs-White remains available and comes straight back into my starting XI for GW3.
