Back slightly outside the top 100k after absorbing the wave of bench boosters last week. Hoping for one final green arrow to solidify an inside the top 100k finish and end on a good note this season. Ultimately I think this season has primarily been a lesson in player price volatility as movements have been quick this year vs how I’ve remembered in years past & will have to keep that in mind for next year.

Two free transfers with some funds in the bank (£2.6M) after downgrading Bruno Fernandes to Johnson last week. The original intent was to use one transfer on getting another arsenal defender (likely White) in place of Maguire. I think this still remains the case as I can’t get to the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold so the Arsenal triple up on defence looks like the best option. That’s despite the temptations of players like Havertz as a third Arsenal representative. That leaves me with one Free Transfer likely in the midfield, subbing Gordon out for a Palace mid such as Eze. Alternatively I could go Jackson up front for either Darwin or Gakpo.

Given how hectic the last day is, especially with lineup leaks etc, I will leave my moves and final decisions for then. For now, going Haaland at captain with Foden vice as well but don’t really see that changing much to be honest. If I bring in White and Eze, I’m likely benching Jackson below but don’t think I bench anyone else for Eze to be honest and leave him as first bench.

Transfer summary: To be determined

GW37 Review

Another strong gamweek, the 2nd consecutive week with a GW rank around 100k and my 5th green arrow in the last 6 gameweeks. It’s been a welcome run after my freefall from GW26 to GW32. I’ve gone from 281k at the GW32 deadline to just 3 points off breaking into the top 100k for the first time since GW3. Cracking the 100k barrier is therefore my goal for GW38.

I had 10/15 returns on the Bench Boost, a 25 bonus from the Boost based on how I would have set my team if I’d not used the Chip; a good result. The key difference maker was owning Gvardiol; fate is a funny thing as I probably wouldn’t have brought him in in GW36 had Van Hecke not picked up a season-ending injury.  I’ve certainly left myself a fighting chance of a 5-figure GW rank then going into GW38, something that looked pretty unlikely a few weeks back. One last push then!

GW38 Team

1 free transfer, £0.2m in the bank.

A few observations on GW38 itself before I get into the nuts and bolts of my team and transfer strategy.

First things first, GW38 = goals! Statistically this tends to be a gameweek that produces a lot of goals, few clean sheets and quite often also produces some unusual scorelines (think West Brom 5-5 Man United for Alex Ferguson’s last game in charge.) To build on this, 2023-24 has been a very high-scoring season, indeed going into GW38 this is already comfortably the highest scoring 20 team Premier League season ever and is only 13 goals behind the current highest scoring Premier League season – the inaugural 1992-93 season where there were 22 teams and therefore 4 extra gameweeks.

Next up, the number of teams with something to play for this season is less than in many previous campaigns. City and Arsenal are of course both still able to win the title, but after that Spurs just need 1 point to secure 5th, Chelsea in 6th can overtake them but could also drop to 7th if they lose and Newcastle win. Man United could also overtake Newcastle in 7th but realistically can’t catch Chelsea in 6th due to goal difference. Finally, technically Luton still aren’t down but it would need a Forest defeat, a Luton win and an unthinkable 12-goal swing for Luton to escape the drop to The Championship. So, Man City, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Newcastle and Man United are the only ones really with something tangible to play for.

Does this matter? In terms of minutes, teams with something to play for are more likely to field a more orthodox line-up. However, they may play more of a tighter game technically and teams with nothing to play for may either play very loose or may play with their foot off the pedal to avoid injuries (especially with the Euros just around the corner.)

Finally we need to look at mismatches. The three that stand out for me are:

Man City vs West Ham – City in great form, will want to get the title sewn up clinically and West Ham utterly beached and in awful form.

Liverpool vs Wolves – Klopp’s final match in front of The Kop against a tired looking Wolves with injuries in defence.

Sheffield United vs Spurs – worst defence in the league versus a team who still need a point.

The other fixture that interests me is Palace vs Villa – Villa are beached now and Palace are in form at the moment.

Ok so taking all this into account, I have one free transfer and my target is a modest 3 point gain to get myself into the top 100k. I don’t like hits in GW38 – they need an instant payback, so unless you can’t field 11 I wouldn’t be ripping my squad up with -4 point hits…….

A good score mainly thanks to Gvardiol’s 21 points and Gusto’s 13 helped by being subbed before Chelsea conceded v Brighton. Upcoming is the last game of the season and I’m a little underwhelmed with my overall rank. Especially in comparison to the last 3 seasons ranks where I averaged an OR of 24k. However, I am looking forward to the next season and rectifying the disappointment of this one.

I activated the Bench Boost and it gave me the best points return since I can remember.

As for GW38 I have 1 free transfers and £0.4m in the Bank. One thing for sure is I will only make one change I will not take -4. I have 3 yellow flags in Saka, De Bruyne and Gordon I will wait until the last moment to take out maybe one of them and bring in
