Introduction

It’s worth noting that the teams shown may not necessarily end up being the final teams or the transfers may have been made in the days prior to the posting . It’s an informal situation to give you an idea of trends.

However the FFGeek team, the Transfer Planner Team and the Contributor Vote team Plus the Contributor teams of Rob, Rick, Andrew, Pete, Javier, Andy and Joe mentioned above on the FFGeek Patreon site all make notified transfers live as they are completed. So you’re always up to date and live for a maximum £4 PCM.

GW4 review

A successful wildcard with returns from 9 of my 11 starters. The key turning point was the penalty save from Raya in the Sunderland v Arsenal game as conceding against a backdrop of triple Arsenal defence would have meant a completely different outcome of the wildcard.

All of my triple Chelsea attack returned although in Palmer I picked the lowest scoring of the 3 as captain.

The Brighton pairing of Gross and De Cuyper was also a major factor in the success with them contributing 28 points in an unexpected 5-0 win at Coventry.

Mbeumo and Szoboszlai were the 2 blankers

GW5 preview

This week looks alot more difficult than last week which wasn’t far off a free hit team given the fixtures. Arsenal face top Premier League goalscorers Brighton in Brighton and the reverse being my 2 Brighton players face the best defence in the league although they will be on my bench so hopefully not needed

The Triple Chelsea attack goes to Brentford who have only conceded 4 goals although given the potency of Chelsea’s attack and how Sunderland gave them a real goang over for 1 half I’m still hoping for multiple returns there

Otherwise Hall, Mbeumo and Barry all have excellent fixtures as does Haaland who will be my captain

My plan overall is to roll the transfer as many times as I can get away with to build up a transfer pool. This week I’ll be rolling too

Transfer summary: likely carrying over the free transfer

Gameweek 4 review

A (very small) green arrow to 690k.

In the end I decided to play the WC and after a crazy week I’m not sure yet if it worked out well or not! If I hadn’t use the Wildcard I would have had Schade for his 15 pointer and Raya for his 14. On the other hand I would have had Foden, who got sent off and I wouldn’t have had De Cuyper who got 11 points. I ended up with returns from 9 of the 11 and hopefully the side is good for the next few GW’s.

The game week started, unusually, with five 3 pm kick offs.

Chelsea were at home to Hull and I went with the triple up on the Chelsea attack on WC and captained Palmer. Palmer was the lowest scoring of the three so a win for those that captained Joao Pedro. Overall, though, I was quite pleased with 30 points between the three of them. I’m not sure Chelsea will be pleased with the result though. Hull continue to impress. Mendy got concussion but should be back soon. He will be last on the bench most weeks anyway.

The only other player I had in the 3 o’clock games was Szboszlai who blanked. Liverpool were up against an un fancied Fulham side and I was expecting them to put 2 or 3 past their opponents.

In the other games Schade, who I’d owned up until WC, got a brace and Gibbs-White continued to look impressive. I had considered him on WC and hope I don’t regret not doing so.

I had decided not to go with triple Arsenal defence and was beginning to regret this when Raya saved a pen, however, I did get an injury time bonus when Saka went down in the box and, this time, scored the pen. I had been considering a Saka draft and an Isak draft. I decided on the Saka draft because when I see him in my team I feel positive, whereas, when I see Isak in the team I get worried. Arsenal had an xGC of 1.80. Most of that was the penalty but they came under a lot more attack than they have so far this season.

In the early Sunday kick off I had De Cuyper and despite an 11 point haul I saw my rank drop quite significantly as Groß got 17 points and Verbruggen 8.

We finished off Sunday with the Manchester derby which, it’s fair to say, had its share of controversy. I would have preferred both Foden and Bruno Fernandes to get a yellow card. I guess if you go by the letter of the law Foden had to get a red for that action and VAR have no right to get involved in yellow card decisions. Even so it felt unsatisfactory. As for the goal, I have to say that, even as a City fan, it felt as if there was a bit of the ‘Infantino? It’s Donald Trump here’ about it. I have no idea how they got that so badly wrong. Anyway, the right result in the end (apologies to any United fans).

The final match of the week was a first outing for my new striker Wissa and it didn’t exactly go to plan. Newcastle looked pretty awful and news that Elanga has a suspected ACL injury and could be out for the rest of the season did not help. I had a pretty decent rank gain before that match but DCL put paid to that.

Decision making and EO

I think it’s interesting to look at the role of ownership in FPL. Andrew Whitfield who is a co contributor also used his wildcard this week and we ended up with a very similar squad, in fact, we both started exactly the same 11 this week. I got a small green and he went from 37k down to 72k because of player ownership at our respective ranks. This takes me back to my decision not to start the season with Bruno Fernandes. It was a bad decision based on his ownership.

If you go against the herd and it goes wrong you get hammered. I will think about this before the start of the next season but what has always served me well in the past is a solid, if not spectacular start, and then find opportunities to attack and defend from a position of strength as the season goes on. It could have worked out OK if Bruno had replicated his points tally from weeks 1,3 and 4 but the potential gain was not going to be of the magnitude of the potential rank loss by not owning him.

Gameweek 4 review:

An eventful and high scoring week, which saw 750,000 wildcards in play, Joao Pedro beat Haaland and Palmer in the popular captains battle, there was a red card and goal controversy in the Manchester derby, a crucial penalty save for the champions, a five star show from the seagulls, Spurs and Coventry are still without a goal after four games and Pascal Gross was king of the gameweek !!

Arsenal were grateful to David Raya for a big penalty save at Sunderland before they scored twice to maintain their 100% record. Man City are 4/4 too after Erling Haaland’s controversial goal proved to be the winner in a 1-0 win over neighbours United, with Phil Foden sent off. Rogers and Pedro both scored but Chelsea were held 2-2 by Hull, with Belloumi scoring twice.

Brighton were in cruise mode with a 5-0 hammering of bottom team Coventry, who have no goals and no points. A Schade brace for Brentford but it finished 2-2 v Bournemouth, who are still searching for their first win despite leading in all four games. And Ipswich scored a dramatic 91st minute winner to beat Palace 3-2.

Elsewhere, a late Jesus goal gave Forest a 2-1 win at Villa who only have one point. Fulham surprisingly held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield. It was also goalless too between Spurs and Everton. The action concluded on Monday with Leeds thrashing Newcastle 4-1 to move into the top three.

Top FPL scorers were:

Gross 17, Schade 15, Bogle 15, Raya 14, Davis 14, Belloumi 13

My GW4 score and rank:

I played my wildcard and had NINE “returners” in a score of 82 points !! That was 15 points above the overall average but 2 points below the benchmark elite manager average, which shows what a high scoring gameweek this was !!

Szoboszlai and Wissa were the only two players who didn’t return. My Arsenal trio combined for 20 points and my Chelsea trio combined for 30 points !! Haaland, Kinsky and De Cuyper all chipped in too, the latter with an 11 pointer, in a gameweek where i had 4 goals, 3 assists and a full house of 4 clean sheets.

Remarkably, NINE returners wasn’t enough and my rank almost doubled from 37K to 73K !! It’s tough at the top !! I’m still in a great place and can’t be disappointed when nine of my picks on wildcard had a return !!

My GW4 significant moments:

It was a late decision to play the wildcard chip, borne partly out of a bit of Chelsea fear from their 6-3 thrashing of Leeds in the league cup last Wednesday when all three of Pedro, Palmer and Rogers we’re hugely impressive. I wanted all three at home to Hull.

I only had one Chelsea player, one Arsenal player and one free transfer, so I went for it on wildcard, tripling up on both teams and with a good deal of success too. I brought in Konsa to secure the double clean sheet, Saka who scored a late penalty, Rogers who replaced Cherki and scored a goal while Cherki went off at half time, and brought in and captained Palmer who grabbed an assist.

So SIX returners from six players from Chelsea and Arsenal . A perfect full house which vindicated pulling the wildcard a week earlier than planned.

Unfortunately, I was punished cruelly by selling both Gross and Calvert Lewin on my wildcard !! Gross went nuts with a huge 17 points and Calvert Lewin scored 10 points after I swapped him out for Wissa who blanked. Gross and DCL had my pants down.

I can’t complain at their hauls. The reason I had earmarked GW5 instead for my wildcard was to play Gross against Coventry before i then planned to sell him before he played Arsenal this week. Similarly, I preferred Calvert Lewin to Wissa for Leeds v Newcastle, with a plan to then switch to Wissa in GW5 before he plays Hull and Coventry.

I was punished by bringing my wildcard forward, which was earmarked for GW5 with good reason. But it wasn’t disastrous. I locked in on 6/6 returners from tripling up on both Chelsea and Arsenal, I had a huge NINE returning players altogether and I was just SIX points down compared to if I’d just done Bruno to Palmer and stuck to the GW5 wildcard plan instead.

I don’t think anyone could have foreseen Pascal Gross scoring 17 points away from home, without which, I’d have been pretty happy with the wildcard outcome. His stats from that game show that he was a huge over performer based on the data.

I lost further points by putting the armband on Palmer instead of Pedro or Haaland, but Palmer was captained by around 70% of the elite manager group. The fact that I was only two points below the elite manager average means that I’ve not lost any significant ground to the top managers that ultimately will be my serious competition come the end of the season.

So what next ??

It’s a short turnaround, from a Monday night game in GW4 to a Friday night game in GW5. Put it in your calendar and don’t miss the Friday deadline.

It’s the last gameweek before a VERY long three week break !!

We have a busy midweek of action too in both the League Cup and Europa league. FIFTEEN premier league teams play midweek !! So avoid early transfers unless you’re on exact money for an “essential move”. Information over price changes.

There will be more “chips” in play this week, mostly wildcards, but maybe a few triple Haalands too. Wildcards will be appealing as there’s a significant fixture swing for a few teams starting this gameweek.

A very popular wildcard window will probably be GW6 though, as it gives you THREE weeks to tinker with your team and react to any injuries, with most countries playing FOUR internationals in that time !!

It does mean that this week is definitely a good week to roll the transfer as we head into such a long break. Unless you feel it’s essential, then rolling looks a good plan, to store transfers for the potential chaos that may or may not happen over such a long break.

Looking at transfers made so far, it’s Morgan Rogers who is the clear top buy for the second week running. He’s returned in every game, including Arsenal away. Pascal Gross is a strange buy before he plays Arsenal but people always chase last weeks points.

Gvardiol looks secure in the Man City team and has three returns in four games, Schade has two double figure scores already, Gibbs White has a lovely entry point against Coventry. De Cuyper against Arsenal is a badly timed buy. Do you really want to buy a Hull attacker but Belloumi is only 5M.

Szoboszlai is top sell after just one penalty goal in four games. Tzolis has just two assists in four games and doesn’t look as exciting as he did. Cherki was hooked at half time and has two blanks since that week when 2M moved him in. Elanga and Shaw are injured. Bruno looks a poor sell before he plays Fulham.

My GW5 plans:

At time of writing, I don’t have any flagged players. Hopefully that’s the case by Friday. Any significant midweek injuries will change my plans below.

I have ONE free transfer and zero cash in the bank………
