Gameweek 5 review

Here’s the points

fpl gw6 team selection

So a disappointing Wildcard which resulted in a big red arrow and didn’t gain any meaningful points on my team if I left it as is. People will say a Wildcard isn’t for just 1 week which I kind of get but making no initial gains means you could have used it the following week with more information. Certainly the hope is that a green arrow minimum would result.

It is worth stating with that gloomy entrance to the article that I was only 1 point behind the 12 top managers I follow and only about 5 points behind their average so all is not a disaster comparatively. However 3 consecutive red arrows from 26k to 514k in 3 gameweeks where 2 chips have been used is difficult to dress up positively.

However, the positive side last season I was 4.4m at this stage although I’m not sure what chips if any I used. It’s also very early to make an assessment so I’ll move off this narrative.

The problem this gameweek is that the players with very good fixtures largely failed. Forest lost at home to Coventry meaning blanks for Williams and MGW. Wissa missed a penalty v Hull. The final fixture disappointment was Mbeumo doing everything but score v Fulham

Despite me lauding the Arsenal and Man City defences as the best in the league they both conceded 3 goals. Against Brighton for Arsenal that’s bad but Man City at home against Sunderland that’s eye wateringly shocking.

Add Gross’ 14 points on the bench when many got him in off the bench for Joao Pedro then it’s all round not good.

The weekend has made me feel I’ve made 2 mistakes on the Wildcard. Triple Arsenal defence now seems overkill and has also excluded me from Saka who seems a much better bet than Palmer.

There’s also not having De Cuyper and not any Brighton defence exposure. I have to hope he is replaced soon by Mitoma or Minteh when they are fit. There’s no way out of that unfortunately.

The only positives this week were Schade’s 9 points v Chelsea and Barry’s 6 points vs Ipswich. Haaland scoring at least made the captaincy a success in everything except neutral EO.
