FPL New Player Profiles – Chelsea’s Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech is a 1.81m,  27 year old Right Winger who signed for Chelsea from Dutch club Ajax for £33m in February.  He is able to play for Chelsea in the 20/21 season.

Ziyech is a Morrocan who has played for the National team 32 times scoring 12 goals.  He predominantly plays as a Right Winger but can also play as a central attacking midfielder or even further back as a central midfielder.

With Willian out of contract at the end of the season and likely to leave Ziyech will fit seemlessly into the right wing position in Lampards often used 4-3-3 formation.

His stats are outstanding.  In the Eredivisie this season he has scored 6 goals and 13 assists in 21 games for Ajax at a phenomenal rate of a goal or assist every 85 minutes.  These stats are no one off as in 18/19 he registered a goal or assist every 73 minutes and in 17/18 every 117 minutes.

Chelsea have had first hand knowledge of him this season.  He was fantastic with 3 assists in the 4-4 draw with Chelsea in the Champions League group stages.

Making football predictions as to how players will perform at a new club is always tricky particularly from the Netherlands where for every Luis Suarez there is a  Mohamed Elyounoussi to match.  However Ziyech will certainly add creativity to the team that was predominantly falling on the head of departing Willian.

Timo Werner

Timo Werner is a 1.81m,  24 year old Centre Forward who signed for Chelsea from German Club RB Leipzig for £53m in June.  He is able to play for Chelsea in the 20/21 season.

Werner has played 29 games for the German National team scoring 11 goals.  Although he predominantly plays as a Centre Forward he can also play as a Right or Left Winger.

Abraham and Giroud have shared the Centre Forward position this season but with Giroud now 33 a long terms replacement and competition for Abraham was needed.

Like Ziyech his stats are outstanding.  Werner in the Bundesliga in 19/20 scored 28 goals and 8 assists in 34 starts at a goal or assist every 78 minutes which are stats that Aguero would be proud of.  In 18/19 Werner also recorded excellent stats with 16 goals and 9 assists in 30 appearances at a goal or assist every 100 minutes.

Spurs supporters have first hand knowledge of him from the Champions League Group games this season where Werner scored the only goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and assisted 1 of the 3 goals in the 3-0 win in Leipzig.

It seems that Werner will compete with Abraham for the CF spot although he could be introduced on either of the wings to get acclimitised to the Premier League.  Given that Abraham has played less than Giroud recently it would be no surprise if Werner becomes the main CF.  Obviously Giroud will still be there next season as well.
