You can see our defenders player rankings article here.  You can also see my article on GK strategy which is about single £4.5m vs rotating £4.5m and premium GKs.

Methodology

I’ve ranked the GKs on their Points per Match from last season but limited the amount of GKs to 14 who I think are reasonably assured at this point of starting.

As pre-season goes on I will subjectively adjust the numbers. As I said in the defenders ranking,  for example if Man Utd sign a CB and a CDM to the already stronger defensive RB in Wan Bissaka then their defence will surely perform better. The reverse could be said for Palace who have lost Wan Bissaka and have injury doubts around Tomkins and Sakho.

The PPMs are adjusted for their fixture difficulty over 6 gameweeks. You can see this in my fixture ease article for defenders and Gks. That converts them to projected points which is then compared to price to give a value for money ranking (VFM).

The schedule

Here’s the schedule which is ranked by projected points over the next 6 games:

£4.5m GKs

The first thing you will notice is that Ryan is the only nailed on £4.5m GK.

Hopefully pre-season will sort out a clear hierarchy in the 3 promoted teams as well as Bournemouth, Burnley and Southampton to give more choice in the £4.5m arena.

At the moment  the only £4.5m GK with a £4.0m reserve is Brighton.  Norwich did have that but I expect new GK signing Fahrmann to be £4.5m when he gets on FPL.

 Possible movers in the table

As I said above the transfer market will likely mean I make some subjective adjustments to the base PPM.

Guaita could move downwards with the loss of Wan Bissaka and injuries to Sakho and Tomkins

Lloris could move up with the defensive protection added by CDM N’Dombele

De Gea could move up with Wan Bissaka joining and if they add a CB and a CDM

Schemichel could be further downgraded if Maguire leaves

The security factor

With teams competing in Europe especially the GK provides gametime security by less rotation at what can often be a cheaper price than their defensive counterparts.  It’s a matter of balancing that against the potential rotation risk among defenders and the additional attacking points they can bring.

Ederson is a popular choice because not only is he cheaper than most of the defensive options but Pep is a rotater in the league as he tries to win every competition.  Add to that the fact that only Mendy is a strong attacking option and he has 2 ready made back ups plus an injury history and Ederson looks attractive.

I see Alisson as a different proposition.  Not only is he only £0.5m less than Van Dijk but at £7.0m Robertson and Alexander Arnold offer fantastic attacking options who at the moment are crucial to their creativity.  Klopp showed last season that he would rotate the front 3 and back 4 in the domestic cups to minimise rotation in the UCL and PL.

Lloris is in a similar position to Ederson.  The attacking defensive options of Trippier and Rose are rotated and the CBs in Vertonghen and Alderweireld offer minimal attacking output.  Therefore Lloris at least at the same price as the defence offers a decent alternative.

Team defence stats

Here’s some teams defensive stats on an overall basis ranked by xGAgainst which was in my defenders article:

As I said in the defenders article 4 teams outperformed their xGA significantly. Those being Liverpool, Spurs, West Ham and Newcastle. The first of those 3 teams have GKs with the highest save % which seems intuitively correct. The teams that underperformed significantly were pretty much limited to Bournemouth and Southampton who in Begovic and McCarthy had 2 of the GKs with the worst save %.

If you think there should be any correlation between xGA and clean sheets then you’d think that Wolves, Leicester and Man Utd should perform better next season.
