The Team stats for the Championship Season
Norwich City finished top of the Championship and secured automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Basic team attacking stats
They scored 75 goals which was 2nd in the Championship. Note WBA and Leeds scored 77 in their promotion season. Fulham 64.
They were first in Shots per game with 15.6 way ahead of 2nd. They had the least failure to score % in the Championship of 17% and the highest possession at 58.6%
Basic team defensive stats
They were 4th in clean sheets with 18. Leeds had 22, WBA 14 and Fulham 17 in their promotion season.
Their shots per game conceded was poor with 11.3 ranked 13th. However goals conceded was better with 36 where they were ranked 2nd. Leeds were 35, WBA 45 and Fulham 48.
Team Stats Summary
In summary a good attacking side but a less than Championship winning defensive side although at least their defensive record was better than WBA and Fulham who were pretty disastrous defensively especially prior to transfers in
It’s worth mentioning early that these stats were with arguably the best player in the Championship in Buendia who’s now gone to Aston Villa. He’s a huge loss of 15 goals and 17 assists.
The Fixtures
Ive rated them in my attacking players fixture ease article as having the worst fixtures for the first 6 gameweeks and for defensive players the 19th worst fixtures for the same period
Here they are from the FPL site
Transfers in and out so far
I’ve taken this graphic below from the Guardian. It will be useful for later discussion. As you can see they’ve spent the Buendia money although Gibson and Giannoulis were on loan last season so only Gunn and Rashica are new
A potential lineup as things stand today
The above players stats from last season in the Championship
*Rashica’s stats are for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga and Gilmours stats are for Chelsea in the Premier league
Stats from the Premier League 19/20
So what does this all mean?
Lineup
Firstly it’s worth stating that I’m just stating the position as I write now. There is quite possibly a lot of transfer activity to come although they have spent the Buendia money already. What it does do is give quite a good base as to analyse further transfer activity and pre-season.
The players who seemed to be the regular core and here now were Pukki, Cantwell, Mclean, Hanley, Gibson, Aarons and Krul.
Subject to further transfers and Hanley’s injury in the Euros which could see him out until the beginning of August.
I’m assuming Gilmour joins on loan and starts. It’s reported that he will be having a medical soon.
I’ve added in Rashica as Buendia’s replacement although he seems to be a left sided player but I’m assuming for the moment either him or Cantwell swaps over.
As far as the LB is concerned young Spanish LB Quintilla returned to Villareal so I’m assuming Giannoulis who competed with him at the end of the season will take that spot
I can’t see £4.0m GK Gunn usurping Krul in goal given he couldn’t get into the Stoke side last season but pre-season will tell us more.
I’m not sure what to make of Dowell who became the CAM towards the end of the season. His stats are ok but will he hold his place?
The stats
It’s worth saying that £6.0m Pukki’s stats are ok but although he started well in the Premier League he faded badly. He’ll probably miss Buendia the most.
£5.5m Dowell has the best stats as a mid but he’s a monitor at best. £5.5m Cantwell’s are poor and he’s no longer the £4.5m mid he was in 19/20.
£4.5m Gilmour assuming he’s joins give a starting £4.5m mid option but does he really offer any attacking potential?
The defence already has question marks over it and considering they had the least clean sheets with 5 in 19/20 in the Premier league and the most goals conceded by some distance with 75 then the omens aren’t good.
The hunt for the £4.0m Def and Gk and £4.5m Mid
Gunn is the £4.0m GK who could possibly challenge Krul but I just can’t see it. The only remote chance of a £4.0m Def is young CB Omobamidele who filled the injury void towards the end of the season when Gibson was out. Hanley still being an injury doubt at the beginning of the season is his best bet but surely there is incoming transfer cover.
£4.5m Gilmour if he signs on loan will be the £4.5m mid and there’s no potential attacking option at the moment
Overall summary
Newly promoted teams are often the first place to search for the elusive playing £4.0m def and GK. I can’t see that happening but I’ve mentioned the 2 names to monitor above
After that the fixtures, their defensive ability and the loss of Buendia means I’m very unlikely to have any Norwich players in the FFGeek team at the start of the season
