Introduction

It’s worth noting that the teams shown may not necessarily end up being the final teams or the transfers may have been made in the days prior to the posting . It’s an informal situation to give you an idea of trends. However the FFGeek team and the Contributor tracker team mentioned above on the FFGeek Patreon site all make transfers as articles are posted. So you’re always up to date and live

Rick Porter

Rick has used 1 Free Hit

It’s been a wild ride over Christmas with a huge number of games, postponements, and surprises. A fair amount has happened with my team during this time – and it’s not always been possible to post updates – but, in short, I’ve avoided taking hits and instead used my first FH in GW19 when I only of had seven players. It wasn’t the biggest boost I’ve ever received from a Free Hit but it gained me 30 points on my alternative non-FH plan, so I’m happy with the decision. It’s certainly felt dicey at times but I’ve climbed about 48k in the last four weeks, which places me back inside the top 50k.

Double Trouble

The fun isn’t over yet, of course, as the Christmas chaos has segued perfectly into the long-awaited double gameweeks that have been hotly anticipated since Covid started striking matches from the schedule. The upcoming DGW22 has several doubles but isn’t quite as tantalising as it might have been. It’s not an obvious FH week for everyone, which is good for me as I’m already one chip down, but I still need to try and take advantage of it so I don’t suffer too badly at the hands of managers still holding their extra FH.

Patience Really is a Virtue

Firstly, I committed something of an FPL cardinal sin by making my FT early when there’s a two-week gap and numerous games being played throughout. That’s bad at the best of times, but when Covid is also looming over every match, it’s even more foolish. However, Salah was always going this week. He’s at AFCON and I was unlikely to be Free Hitting, so he had to leave my team for a while. He’ll almost certainly drop in price 2/3 times before deadline day and the obvious replacement and probable top DGW22 captain choice, Son, was likely to rise by a similar amount. I’m no slave to team value but losing between 0.4m and 0.6 on such an obvious transfer didn’t sit right. I made the move before any prices changed and, obviously, it blew up in face with Son now out until February. Superb.

I’d love to say it was a lesson learnt, but I already learned this particular lesson years ago. No regrets, though. I knew I was taking a risk and it burnt me this time. Others risks have paid off and, annoyingly, you’ve got to accept both brands of luck if you’re going to gamble.

Possible Transfers

One of the reasons I was more comfortable making the brash move above is because over the last few weeks I’ve not spent any points. Instead, I’ve taken measured risks, knowingly fielded less than 11, used my FH, and taken some chances in terms of missing out on some high ownership players and sudden bandwagons. GW19 would have cost me 12 points to field a team of eleven, so I made the decision that I’d Free Hit then and willingly take a -8 in DGW22 to keep pace when others used theirs. Annoyingly one of these hits will now have to move Son out, probably to someone like Maddison or Moura, so I can afford to upgrade Watkins/Antonio to Ronaldo or Kane who’ll be the new top captain picks. I was always taking a -8 this week, only now I’ll have one less double player to show for it. Frustrating, but you can’t win ‘em all. Though, with a potential Ronaldo injury and Leicester player issues, i’ll be waiting until the last 30 mins to make any firm decisions.

Free Hit?

Of course, I do still have other my other FH. There will undoubtably be a better time to use it but, if I lose any more players due to injury or postponements, I certainly won’t rule it out. I’d get Salah back in GW23 for a single week of benching, scrub off the Son error as if it never happened, and get a few more popular double players in. Besides, you never know, we might get another FH later down the road.

Transfer summary: Son out, probably to Maddison or Moura and Watkins/Antonio to Ronaldo or Kane

GW21 Review

A long but positive week in the end for my team. Captain Bowen was the main story but what made it was some pure jam whereby I got Broja off the bench for Gallagher and Alonso for Livramento. Without this my rank would have stayed the same but instead I went up from 31.5k to 19.3k. Other returners were Jota, Antonio and TAA.

GW22 Preview

1FT £2.8m ITB and a number of flags. I originally had this down as a chance to use my FH and make some gains however a combination of the double gameweek team’s fixtures aren’t amazing and the single gameweek players I’d be getting rid of having decent fixtures I’ve decided against this. A FH would have a high chance of yielding more points but I just don’t think it’s enough, especially when I’d have to deal with some of my issues anyway afterwards.

So Son is my main issue and I’d like to get some more ‘doublers’ in my team. So I’m looking at a -4 to go Son to Tielemans and Broja to Kane. I only have exact money to do this as I write so there’s no guarantee that’ll stay the same way come Friday when I make the transfers.

If I were to free hit the additional transfers I’d make are Antonio to a Watford striker, Gallagher to Mount, Cancelo to Emerson and Sanchez to De Gea with some bench changes just in case (e.g. Lowton).

Captain is between Ronaldo and Kane. It’s currently on Ronaldo but haven’t committed either way yet. The plan will be to sell one of these to get Salah with when he returns from the Africa Cup of Nations. I’ll be benching Gallagher over Gray.

Good luck all

Transfer summary: likely -4 to go Son to Tielemans and Broja to Kane.

GW21 review

A Gameweek that felt like it was going to go on forever and one where luck didn’t seem to be on my side again until the last game. I took a minus 8 to bring in Diop, Bowen and Calvert-Lewin (DCL) all for players who were flagged or wouldn’t play. Ultimately it worked out but all thanks to the West Ham pair, while my second -4 on DCL proved costly. A missed penalty and a cancelled second match; if I’d stayed as was and settled on just the first -4 for Bowen I’d have at least got 2 points from King so really it was a transfer that cost me 6 points in the end.

Thankfully, Bowen and Diop counter-balanced the DCL pain – I was 50/50 on the Captaincy between Bowen and Antonio and ultimately got this right; his 42 points was nearly half my total before hits. I was also 50/50 on Diop vs Johnson based on the funds I had left and ended up winning this was 8 to 0 so I’ll count that as a small win which also soothes the DCL pain somewhat. I had 7 returners in the end, though Bowen was my only double figure haul and a 15% rank rise in a week where I’ve taken a -8 feels like a decent result.

Like a lot of others, I felt pretty frustrated with FPL before the West Ham v Norwich game. The Covid postponements, in particular the Everton v Leicester have made things pretty chaotic and I was pretty sour about Leicester calling off, having played Watford in the FA Cup utilising their U23s to bolster their squad. I don’t see why the Premier League don’t insist on clubs doing this – they have big squads it would give an opportunity for young players to get a chance to stake their claim.

Still, there’s no point in stressing over things you can’t control and the FA Cup gave me a chance to switch off from FPL completely – I enjoyed seeing the upsets come in and it also gave me a chance to get some headspace before this week. And it’s fair to say that West Ham v Norwich reminded me about why I enjoy FPL so much and with 5 chips in my pocket and a bunch of double gameweeks to come, there’s much to be positive about moving forwards, even if we still kind of have to play week to week somewhat. Let’s see where I am for Double GW22.

GW22 Team

1 free transfer, nothing in the bank.

Like many others, I’ve got a number of fires in my team to put out but the biggest 2 are in my midfield where I have Salah at AFCON and Son injured. I’ve also got a non-playing defender in Duffy (ok he did get 30 mins vs Everton) and Smith-Rowe who is only getting minutes from the bench too. Alexander-Arnold is flagged as well, but I expect him to be ok to play as he started in the EFL semi.

My big issue this week is that the Son injury has scuppered my Captain plans. I don’t own either of Ronaldo or Kane, who both have a double gameweek and will now be the 2 Captain favourites and the only way I can get either of them is by taking a hit. I have entertained the idea of playing one of my Free Hits but after some sage advice on the Pod from Ben and Geek and some thinking, I’ve shelved this idea. I have though for fun put a Free Hit team together which is posted on the Patreon site

I’m therefore left with a dilemma.

Option 1

Is to simply replace Son with my free transfer and suck it up when Kane and Ronaldo play. I’d probably go Maddison or Moura for a replacement if this was the case, though it would leave me without a clear Captain choice – I think I’d end up putting it on King in that scenario simply because he has a double gameweek with 2 favourable fixtures.

Option 2

Is to take a -4 points hit to sell Son and a striker and bring in either Kane or Ronaldo plus whatever price of midfielder I can afford. The first problem with this is which striker to sell. King is going nowhere with his double so it’s either Antonio or DCL and both have a good fixture albeit as a single gameweek rather than a double. Of the 2, the issue might be solved as DCL might still be struggling with the minor muscle injury that kept him out of the FA Cup but if he’s fit I’d probably lean towards selling Antonio as I still have Bowen as cover. If I sell Antonio, it leaves me £6.2m for a midfielder if I go Kane or £5.9m if I go Ronaldo which doesn’t leave me much choice. It would probably have to be Kane and someone like Trossard (though that creates another issue in GW24 when Brighton have no fixture.)

Option 3

Is similar to Option 2 but I sell Salah instead. The issue with this is that it’s booking a transfer to buy him back later, but the positive is that it does open a bigger menu of options in midfield as I’ll have more budget available – this could get me a combination of Ronaldo and Moura or Kane and Maddison for example. It would also bring a second positive that I could then sell Son in GW23 for a Man City midfielder to give me a clear Captain option.

I think I’ll probably lean towards one of the 2nd or 3rd options, but I’ll need a bit of time to mull this over. The Friday deadline is a bit of a pain as well for me – I’ll be leaving my transfer as late as possible and I’ll try and post my final team on Twitter before the deadline if I can, but it will be dependent on if I get a tea break at work! Good luck this week everyone.

Likely transfers – Salah/Son and Antonio out to Kane/Ronaldo and Maddison/Moura
Captain – Kane or Ronaldo
