Introduction

This is part 3 of the FPL managers who contribute to the FFGeek site with good histories who show their teams each week. This will give people a feel for what other managers are doing. It’s a fairly informal thing with no obligation on anyone and these teams may change at anytime before the deadline without further notice. In the future it also wont cover early transfers. It’s just to give an idea of the trends for the week no more.

Rob Cosgrove

Rob’s last 3 seasons overall rank were 45k, 40k and 23k

GW22 points: 60 (FPL average 57) Total points 1,289 Gameweek rank 2,956k, Overall Rank: 77k, red arrow 3k, Team Value: £104.3m

My first red arrow for a while! To be fair, I was due one! Only dipped approx. 3K so not the worst red arrow.

Fabianski getting injured annoyed me a lot because my hand was forced into another goalkeeper transfer this week! I was planning on using my transfers this week and next on more Liverpool and West Ham players for the DGW so this injury was such bad timing!

Looking at the replacement options it just didn’t make sense in my thought process to transfer someone in who isn’t playing twice next week (e.g McCarthy, Guiata, Ryan) so that limited me to only the Liverpool or West Ham GK.. earlier in the week I was going to transfer Martin in as this would save funds and he will play twice, this was until the injury to Fabianski only ruled him out short term, meaning that he might be back for 1 of the 2 DGW fixtures; stressful!

Then they go and sign Randolph, who would be in the same boat as Martin meaning when Fabianski returns he will be reserve GK. Oh how Fabianski has ruined my plans!

This only left me with 1 option: Alisson…at 6.1 I nearly fainted! I would have to take a 4 point hit to afford him which was definitely not ideal. I was hoping to get Robertson in next week with a -4 anyway so swapping my Robertson transfer for Alisson this week would still give me double defensive cover and triple Liverpool cover overall, I just lose the attacking potential of Robertson. Plus, there is 0 risk rotation with Alisson whereas Robertson could always be rested for someone else if Klopp fancies ruining FF managers plans.

This route I felt was the only one that made sense for the DGW therefore, with one eye shut, I took a 4 point hit to transfer a new goalkeeper in my team (I may have broken every FF rule here!) and downgraded Dunk to Stephens for the exact amount of money needed. I like Dunk but he is going to be on my bench most weeks so made sense to have someone cheaper there.

This I know also leaves me with Marital VS 2 x Liverpool defence this week which just couldn’t be helped because I can’t bench Martial.

Captain will be Vardy not De Bruyne simply because he plays on Sunday!

Transfer summary: Fabianski, Dunk OUT Alisson, Stephens IN  4 point hit taken (don’t yell at me ha!)

Captain: Vardy

GW22 review

If GW21 was a bit disappointing then GW22 is best described as an absolute car crash! Easily my worst gameweek of the season and a significant drop in my Overall Rank as I drop out of the top 100k for the first time since GW16.

It couldn’t really have begun in a worse way with keeper Fabianski being injured 10 minutes into the opening match. Saturday afternoon was also pretty painful with just 1 return from Captain Vardy in the afternoon kick-offs and multiple returns for higher ownership players not in my team. At least there was 15 points from my Liverpool triple in the evening, but then I could only watch on Sunday afternoon as Man City eroded my Overall Ranking even further leaving me with a nasty red arrow. To add insult to injury my only big haul of the weekend was sat on the bench – 10 points from Dendoncker of all people.

In the end I had 5/11 returns but none were double figures are all were from players with high effective ownership. None of my ‘difference makers’ really offered anything significant but I have managed to carry 2 transfers into GW23 and my OTV keeps steadily climbing so I think now is a good time to do a bit of surgery to my squad to see if I can shore things up for 2 gameweeks in close succesion, including a double in GW24.

GW23 Team

So I’ve 0.5m in the bank to complement my 2 transfers but an injured keeper and several players who are contributing precious little to my team. Zaha is the main target for a transfer out this week, but I’ve got also got problem players in Rico and Kelly and to a lesser extent Maupay and Jimenez.

To go off on a slight tangent before I talk through my transfers, Geek alludes a lot in his team articles to the template and trying to be careful where you take this on and this has been the major problem for my team over the last few weeks. I’ve drifted steadily away from the template since about GW17 having not been able to work in players like Rashford, Ings, Maddison and Grealish and choosing to offload Abraham when he was out of form for a lower ownership option in Jimenez. What has become clear to me over the last couple of weeks is that I’m steadily getting burnt each week by these template players and I need to start finding ways to work some of these into my team. However that being said, you still need difference makers otherwise your ranking stays fairly static – it’s about getting the balance right. I’m still keen to take risks, but I think these need to be tempered with some more conservative moves to get the blend correct. With that in mind here’s what I’m going to do this week.

First of all, I’ve caved in and bought Danny Ings. I think I’m probably one of many who is just waiting for his goals to dry up and to be fair to him – they simply haven’t. He keeps getting chances, he keeps finding the net and his attacking stats against Leicester last week were simply frightening, he’s in too good a form to ignore at the moment. So he’s in and I’ve sacrificed Jimenez – he’s actually done ok for my team until the last 3 weeks but from GW24, 4 of his next 5 fixtures are LIV, mun, LEI and tot so this looks an ok exit point. This also frees me up some funds again and I’ll go through where I’m going to use them in a bit.

Next up, I need a keeper. I did consider a like for like by swapping in Martin for my reserve keeper but the signing of Randolph and the uncertainty regarding the length of Fabianski’s absence has put me off this. So instead I’m looking at other options – I like the look of Foster and Ryan but McCarthy at 4.3m was too tempting freeing me up some more useful funds. Yep I’ve done it, I’ve transferred in 2 Southampton players this week – what am I thinking?!

Now to where I’m going to use these extra funds. Zaha just has to go and with him playing City away this week and the rest of my squad looking a bit thin, I’m going to take only my second -4 of the season to replace him. I’ve got 8.5m to spend on a replacement and had a few thoughts in mind. Mahrez is exactly 8.5m, but I think the week to get him has passed – credit to Joe and everyone else who got him last week; great call guys. Looking at template players Maddison and Grealish are the obvious ones here, but Maddison’s fixtures turn in GW25 and although I like Grealish, I’m worried about Villa’s form. Another option would be Cantwell who has 24% ownership. He’s got a great fixture this week and I could bring him in for Dendoncker and then worry about Zaha next week by leaving him on the bench.

Another option having made a more conservative move looking at template players by getting Ings in, is to use the spot to take the template on so I’m going to go for a lower ownership pick. I was initially set to go for an old FPL Nemesis of mine in Richarlison but he’s been flagged as injured so that rules him out. David Silva is tempting but for similar reasons to Mahrez I think I could be a week too late and on a similar vein Martial would be a good shout but a week too early, which I think leads me to the answer. So the plan at the moment is to go Dendoncker to Cantwell and then move Zaha next week for Martial – I’ve got about 0.1m leeway on this so it could be tight! I’m not 100% set on this though, so I’ll probably mull this into Friday evening and Tweet a final confirmation. If I don’t do this, I’ll probably do Zaha to Grealish.

For my team this week – provided I make the Cantwell move it will be Zaha, Kelly and Rico will make up my bench and I’m going to try and move one of these latter 2 on next week to try and fill out my squad a little. At the moment I’m on Vardy for captain, but it’s a tough call versus De Bruyne – I’ll see what the polls say before I make a final call. With Rashford possibly injured and facing Liverpool anyway, the main worries for me in terms of overall ranking damage are firstly Abraham, who could do well against a struggling Newcastle team. Secondly there’s Grealish, though a trip to the Amex is tricky and hopefully Maupay can repay some of the faith I’ve put in him over the last couple of weeks. And finally there’s getting this Captain call wrong. Vardy and KDB both carry such high effective ownership the the wrong call on this can be costly – I’ve got this wrong over the last few weeks so hopefully things will start to even out. I feel like I’m due some luck again and it’s also my birthday this weekend, a green arrow would certainly make a nice present!

So all the best for this weekend folks – enjoy the games and I hope fate is kind to you!
