Introduction

This is part 1 of the FPL managers who contribute to the FFGeek site with good histories who show their teams each week. This will give people a feel for what other managers are doing. It’s a fairly informal thing with no obligation on anyone and these teams may change at anytime before the deadline without further notice. It won’t cover transfers in real time either. It’s just to give an idea of the trends for the week no more.

Joseph’s last 3 seasons OR were 28k, 7k and 13k

I won’t be doing any transfers until close to the deadline this week as the double and blank gameweek situation is set to change dramatically throughout the week with the FA cup 5th round taking place. My original plan is to save the transfer as 10 of my 11 starting players have home fixtures against teams from the bottom seven. There are obvious concerns around Traore due to Wolves seeming to play better in a 3-5-2 and his ongoing shoulder injury, but I’m comfortable to hold for now.

However, the potential double gameweek for Man City and Arsenal has thrown a spanner in the works somewhat, especially as I only own De Bruyne from those teams. I have little interest in any other City asset due to potential rotation, while any investment in Arsenal will depend on which teams are blanking in GW31. I would like Aubameyang, but I will find it difficult to sell any of my front three with their upcoming fixtures. I do have the cash  currently for a straight swap from Vardy, but it is tough to sell a player before Villa at home while price changes may even rule that out.

There is another scenario where I can bring Aubameyang in which is if we receive early Liverpool team news which shows considerable rotation. I could then sell Salah and Ings for him and Pepe as part of a -4, though the issue is that this would commit me to the free hit being used in GW31. However, with Liverpool facing tricky away tests either side of the blank against Everton and City, this move could pay dividends, but certainly a tricky one to pull the trigger on.

Ultimately, I would prefer to save the transfer and captain Salah. He is proving extremely reliable during home fixtures and Bournemouth continue to leak goals, so I don’t see the need to go anywhere else. However a double gameweek announcement would throw everything up in the air so I need to sit tight for now and see how the cards fall!

Good luck all and may your arrows be green!

Transfer Summary: save transfer (potentially find a way to get Aubameyang)

I made an early went Traore out and Sarr in

I think having that midfield place up in the air at Wolves was making me worry about rotation.

Sarr has done well and I think with Deulofeu  out he should be pretty nailed.

Subs wise I am ok I feel to leave at that.  Vardy and Martial on my watchlist as potential transfers if a double gameweek was to land in GW29.

Transfer summary:  Traore out Sarr in

Okay, I’ll admit it. On hearing the rumoured news about Vardy not being in the squad, I had a bit of a panic. My bench was bare so it was a guaranteed 0 points. It seemed foolish to ignore this information, so with 5 minutes until deadline I switched my VC to Ings and made an extra transfer for -4. With the team sheet info in front of me, I knew Barnes would be starting and – as I was facing guaranteed nil points – a move would only really cost me 2 as long as he played for 60 mins and avoided a card. A clean sheet would be a bonus and any other return would see me in the black. It seemed a gamble worth taking considering the opponent. Grealish was a prime candidate for dropping due to his tough upcoming fixtures and recent form. Obviously, I now know that I shouldn’t have bothered – I ended up being 2 points worse off. 2 points felt like a lot this week.

Never say never

Between the various benchings and blanks, by the end of Saturday I was staring at meagre 13 points… and I’d spent 4 getting there. A net of 9 with just two Sunday matches to go is probably one of the bleakest positions I’ve been in. My rank had already plummeted to way outside the top 100k and two of my remaining four players – Traore and Aurier – had been benched the previous week. I was bracing myself for a kicking as, in my eyes, only my new recruits – Doherty and Jimenez – had any potential – and then an annoying goal from the newly-popular Fernandes threatened my rank even further.

My phone buzzing to let me know that both Doherty and Aurier had scored was huge. True game-changing stuff due to the ownership levels involved. A further assist for Doherty and then a Jimenez goal meant I secured 28 points from that one match and ended up with a green arrow. It’s a funny old game.

What next

Ings, Vardy, Traore, Ryan, Rico… These guys are all on my naughty list. Poor form and questionable starting positions aplenty. Pope, Fernandes, Calvert-Lewin, Sarr… they are all on a different, far better, list. Changes need to happen as I can’t be relying on the likes of Aurier to save me every week. The problem is that it’s probably not the time to start throwing transfers around. A potential DGW29 could be confirmed at any moment, BGW31 is about to be revealed, and we’ll have a better idea about future doubles later this week too.

One thing I am certain of is that this feels like a natural exit point for Ryan. My stubbornness in sticking with him has cost me a lot of points recently. He faces 6 of the toughest teams over the next 7 weeks and hasn’t kept a clean sheet in 8. It also seems unlikely he’ll have a match in GW31. Admittedly, it seems crazy to be shipping a playing keeper when I have flagged players like Traore and non-starters like Rico, but owning him is getting more irritating each week.

Transfer

How the mid-week matches play out will ultimately dictate what I do next. I imagine it’ll be the same for most the contributors here, meaning nobody will make any definite moves until Friday afternoon. If I’m still preparing for GW31 without a Free Hit then each transfer has to move me towards that goal. That means Pope for Ryan is a shoo-in if Ryan has no match that week. If a Free Hit in GW31 looks unavoidable then Ederson would probably be my first choice due to their upcoming doubles and the fact he’s the only ’nailed on’ City player in my eyes. If he has two matches in GW29 then that’s even better.

Transfer Summary

Probably: Ryan OUT Pope/Ederson IN

Note

Of course, it’s unlikely to be that simple. Regardless of what happens – whether I’m prepping for a playable team in GW31 or trying to get the most from the doubles – I really can’t see me getting through the next few weeks without taking a hit or two. Especially if the Vardy injury turns out to be more serious. If a double for City and Arsenal does arrive in GW29 (and I decide the GW31 Free Hit is inevitable) then I may well spend up to 8 points on getting the likes of Aubameyang and Saka into the team in the hope that they will pay for themselves over the two matches. I’ve not taken many hits this season, but I feel the time for a few more calculated risks has probably arrived.

Captain

I’m thinking Liverpool will be out to prove a point and I don’t fancy the Bournemouth defence being able to stop them, so it’s Salah again. That’s unless DGW29 is announced, of course.

The team

Below is the team as it stands. Assume Ryan is either Pope or Ederson.

Observations before getting into the player analysis:

•     Last week I added Boly instead of Doherty to have the flexibility in case of a double Aubamayang gw. However, Doherty is playing so well I am going to just get him in. My transfer is already done. Kelly to Doherty for the Wolves double defence.

•     I still have 3.5M in the bank. Even after the Kelly to Doherty.

•     My plan is to wait for news now. If Arsenal get a double I have a move planned. The main point of interest though is how many players will blank in 31 and now is the time we find out.

•     If Grealish ends up blanking and Arsenal double I may take a hit to make him Pepe for a differential double gw Captain. It is GW 29 and I am behind in rank. Figure now is the time to do these things. On the flip side Salah plays Bourmouth so even if Arsenal double Salah could still be the highest point scorer of the week and avoiding Arsenal could pay off.

•     Vardy. He is obviously missing. I took a hit to make him Jimenez with the leaked news. He may be back and burn me but getting Jimenez already covered the hit and I would rather have him long term so it payed off.

•     Another red arrow but I think I played last week right. Maybe I should have went Doherty over Boly but I felt the flexibility was more important at the moment.

•     One more note on 31 planning. If Norwich lose to Tottenham this week I will be targeting DCL as my next player in for Ayew or Ings. Going into 31 my transfer will likely be Sarr or Doucouré.

•     Liverpool is on watch. The invincibles is over. They may rotate now. I think they will keep strong until officially locking the league up, but they are on watch. Once the rotation begins I might drop down to two. It really needs thought. However it will be talked to death by pundits and twitter so research wont be hard to find at that time..

Game week player analysis:

☆     Keeper

•    McCarthy. Yuck. What was that? Strike one.

•    Gazzaniga. He’s back? Imagine this ends up working out? Haha. I doubt it.

☆     Defenders

•    Alexander Arnold. Even if they rotate, I doubt he is who I drop.

•    Robertson. Not great. Oh well.

•    Söyüncü. They looked horrendous I thought. I may swap him to first bench spot with Grealish. I was very unimpressed on Friday even if it was not directly Soyuncus fault.

•    Kelly to Doherty. Another GW31 player that I actually want in my team regardless and has great fixtures.

•    Boly. Not a great debut for me but I knew bringing him in before Tot was not ideal.

☆     Midfielders

•    De Bruyne. Can’t wait to get him playing again.

•    Salah. As long as Arsenal and City don’t double he should still be a landslide captain favourite.

•    Richarlison. He’s one of my favourite players right now for OOP midfielder an an attacking team.

•    Hayden. The fact he started and got me 3 was amazing.

•    Grealish. Holding. Remember. He looked good against Tot only two weeks ago.

☆     Forwards

•    Jimenez. Rewarded for the hit immediately.

•    Ayew. He shoots he scores.

•    Ings. Great. Just what I wanted. Ings in my team frustrating me. Oh well.

Upcoming GW29

☆     Musical Chairs

Kelly ➡️ Doherty

☆     Captain

Salah. VC Jimenez

☆     Substitute decisions

Gazzaniga. Grealish. Ayew. Hayden.

Good luck.

To avoid bring priced out I did Dunk+Ings to Doherty+Jota Saturday

Still not sure who to captain. If Arsenal gets a double it’s Aubameyang, otherwise Mane.

Cheers Mikael
