Introduction

This is part 1 of the FPL managers who contribute to the FFGeek site with good histories who show their teams each week. This will give people a feel for what other managers are doing. It’s a fairly informal thing with no obligation on anyone and these teams may change at anytime before the deadline without further notice. It won’t cover transfers in real time either. It’s just to give an idea of the trends for the week no more.  The teams are shown as their “final-ish” teams so they could change.  Where they have twitter accounts I have shown this and they may update them there or on our Slack Channel which is part of our subscription Patreon site but this is not guaranteed

All the teams were completed after the fixture amendment yesterday adding in Spurs v Fulham

Andrew Pratt

Andrew finished with an overall rank of 313k last 8k in 18/19 and 1k in 17/18

GW17 points: 72 (FPL average 56) Total points: 1,066, Overall Rank: 47k, green arrow:  15k Team Value: £104.0m

This week I was happy with an 8th consecutive green arrow although the last minute Chelsea goal and others having big points coming off the bench hurt me a bit. Captain Kane came through. The City double defence really has deserved more.

We’re now into the blank / double arrangement and the fixtures are still slightly in flux. BGW18’s Villa v Spurs fixture has been replaced with Spurs v Fulham, which is far more attractive for Spurs owners. The Leeds v Southampton game in DGW19 is now in doubt. Covid may yet play some further role in the BGW18 / DGW19 arrangement.

Going into BGW17 I saved my transfer to have 2 FTs going into gameweek 18. Before the price changes I swapped out Salah for de Bruyne who is at home to Brighton in BGW18. With Welbeck looking out and Martinez now out, this takes my number of starting BGW18 players to only 6: Cancelo, Dias, de Bruyne, Fernandes, Son and Kane. These are strong assets. For some time I’ve been interested in and working towards accepting a weaker team in BGW18 and saving the FH for later in the season, where I think it could be even more valuable (to me at least) in what looks like BGW29. I’ve been aiming to have a team ready to bench boost in DGW19 should the planets align, but I’m also open to fielding a strong 11 of mostly doublers in DGW19 and also holding the BB chip for one of the hopefully bigger double gameweeks later in the season. Unlike many others, I’ve not had my plans thrown into complete chaos by the rescheduled fixtures and fortunately my overall BGW/DGW strategy is still in play.

With a second and third transfer (i.e. a 4 point hit) I can take my number of starting BGW18 players to 8, which I think is acceptable to avoid playing the FH chip – provided they all start! I figure that there are typically 11 players contributing 12 returns to your weekly score (since the captain returns twice). If I have 8 strong players starting, I could have 9/12 (75%) of the typical FH team’s BGW18 score covered. This means I’d effectively lose about 15 points on the free hitters in BGW18, assuming all my 8 players start. I reckon that the FH chip is worth about 15 points, so this would be a fair trade. However, the advantage to my approach is that my 2 additional BGW18 players can also strengthen my DGW19 squad, in preparation for the potential bench boost.

The current players I believe who can most easily / effectively be upgraded are:

– Steer (non-playing, must be upgraded if I’m to bench boost in DGW19)

– Chilwell (although I have quite a lot of money invested in him, Chelsea has been looking off-color, their 2 fixtures in GW19 are both away games, they blank in BGW18, and a United defender may well score more over the next few games)

– Walker-Peters (the potential loss of the double in DGW19 which would only leave LEI away in that week has put me off him a bit)

– Welbeck (I plan to move him out for Antonio for DGW19 but Antonio doesn’t play in BGW18 so I’ll hold off this move for now)

I’ve decided to hold off the Welbeck -> Antonio and Walker-Peters options since Antonio is only of any use going into DGW19 and Walker-Peters may yet get his double in DGW19. That means I’ll be doing the following later tonight subject to no late news:

– Steer to de Gea

– Chilwell to Shaw (I’d prefer Wan Bissaka but this would preclude funds to later go Welbeck to Antonio, who looks a must-own next week)

This would give me 8 reasonably strong starters in BGW18 (though Shaw is a slight gamble) and a team more or less in line to take on DGW19 with bench boost or without. If necessary, I’m open to taking one more hit going into GW19 to make best use of the bench boost but I’m hoping it’ll just be Welbeck to Antonio. I fear Covid has other plans..

This week the captain is between de Bruyne and Kane.

I have a fear that later tonight before the deadline we’ll get more news and I’ll need to free hit in a panic, so I will have a FH template team ready to go should it be needed at short notice!

It should now be clear that a serious FPL manager needs a team planner, one like Joseph Crilley’s on the FFGeek Patreon site. Good luck and stay safe.

Transfer summary: My BGW18 team assuming Steer -> de Gea and Chilwell -> Shaw later tonight looks as follows

Here’s the team assuming the transfers are made.

In the end I am saving the free hit chip in favour of the -4.

There are 9 players in the squad but more importantly, I have what I feel are the 4 main premiums in Kane/Son/Bruno/KDB. I also have two city defenders.

The free hit would get me a higher score but I think the lineup is good enough to (hopefully) keep a gray arrow and save the chip. Any sort of green arrow this week would be a huge win.

It also means that I don’t lose the GW18 transfers to help me to better prepare for the GW19 by now having 3 city players instead of 1.

Next week the plan is currently Son/Kane to Salah/Vardy for a -4.

I changed the captain to Kane, as his fixture improved and he was fully rested over the weekend.

Vice is on Bruno.

Good luck!
