Gameweek 10 review:

Well plenty of goals and drama again, in what turned out to be the Reece James show !! Everyone including the fishmongers daughter captained Salah, with Livramento, Gallagher and Smith Rowe laughing at us from our benches. Well done if you picked up their points. The shiny new transferred in toys, Mount and Foden left their backers frustrated, and Ronaldo gave us a nudge with some tasty fixtures on the horizon. Oh and Ramsdale put in a keeper masterclass as he was simply not going to be passed. I feel for you if you benched him for Foster?

Chelsea opened up a three point lead after a stroll at Newcastle, with dropped points from rivals Liverpool who lost a two goal lead to Brighton, and Man City who surprisingly slipped up at home to Palace. West Ham are 4th after the Hammers put a nail in ten man Villa, Man Utd bounced back from the 5-0 Liverpool drubbing with a 3-0 win at woeful Spurs. Norwich and Newcastle lost again and are still searching for that elusive first win

We also saw Nuno bite the dust in losing his job at Spurs, which might ignite interest in Tottenham with some very attractive games on the horizon.

My GW10 score and rank:

54 points with 6/11 “returning” players. Vital contributions from Salah 10, Raphinha 9, Jimenez 9, Chilwell 8, Rudiger 6 and Benrahma 5. I had 24 points sat on my bench this week !!

A very pleasing green arrow, up from 74k to 59k. I was on a red arrow from Saturday right through to the final game on Monday night before Raul Jimenez finally turned me from green to red. All’s well that ends well.

My GW10 talking points:

My Gameweek couldn’t have got off to a worst start in the early game, with my only player, Jamie Vardy missing out and the popular Ramsdale playing like Gordon Banks, capped off with attacking returns from the popular Saka and Smith Rowe. Just about as bad as it could possibly have been.

It was the double Chelsea clean sheet that went a long way to rescuing my Saturday, without which I would have had just one Saturday return from seven. My belated transfer in of Chilwell for Alonso brought its rewards, alongside the ever reliable Rudiger. The Chelsea defensive double up currently looks solid compared to the Man City one, although you are of course buying a ticket to the tricky Tuchel tombola, so you need a strong spirit and a strong bench for when those inevitable rotations arrive.

Talking of benches, I left 19 points at first and second sub, as all my chosen 11 started. Some managers had more jam than Hartleys and had those points flying off the bench and counting. Azpiculeta, Mbeumo and Mount missing out proved a real blessing in disguise to some lucky managers. The bench points don’t bother me. It simply confirms the strength of my bench. I chose to play Benrahma over Livramento and there was only one point in it. And a Gallagher 13 pointer away at Man City could not even have been predicted by Mystic Meg. The fact I own Livramento and Gallagher is comfort indeed going forward.

Raphinha seems very high maintenance with his niggly injuries, and the “will he won’t he” mantle. Will he or won’t he make it back from Brazil. Will he or won’t he recover from his weekly injury. No doubting his quality in a struggling Leeds team. His nine points were my Sunday highlight.

Some asked why I was playing keeper Sanchez v man city and Liverpool when Foster was on my bench with better fixtures. Well Watford have not kept a clean sheet all season. Sanchez outscored Foster by a point over the two games. It bodes well that Sanchez made only one save at Liverpool. That Brighton defence is as tight as a Yorkshiremans wallet. Great fixtures ahead for the Seagulls too. Ramsdale had his day in the sun but I wouldn’t swap for those Brighton fixtures.

Did anyone dare to not captain Salah after the traumas of the Havertz armbanders last week. A solitary assist was irrelevant with his “effective ownership “ at higher rank levels at 199% !! It’s about the other 14 players in our teams just now. Whose going to be the first to blink and take him on ? Go on, I dare you..

If my Gameweek could not have started worse, it could not have ended better. Blanks from the popular Hwang, Gray and Townsend, and a 9 point haul from Raul Jimenez. Thank you Jimmy.

Surprising blanks too for Trent, Cancelo, and Antonio. How did Antonio blank in a 4-1 win. He was “assisting the assister” this week. Two points in two games for Vardy as my Lukaku replacement. We should have just stuck with Christiano Ronaldo after all.

So what next:

I have 1.1M in the bank and one free transfer.

It’s a quick turn round with a Monday night game in GW10 running quickly into a Friday night game to kick start GW11. And that’s with seven premier teams playing in Europe in between !!

I am drafting this article before the midweek European action, so any significant injuries will potentially affect my highlighted transfers and plans.

My potential transfer thoughts:

My priority this week will be to bring in a Brentford attacker v Norwich as I own neither Toney or Mbeumo. I got away with neither at Burnley. 16/21 of my fellow contributors own Toney. 18/20 of the twenty managers I follow closely own Toney. He is the glaring hole in my own definition of the template, which defines my playing style. His goal record is actually surprisingly woeful. Something like 3 goals excluding penalties in 20 games and four successive blanks. It’s definitely fixtures over form !! But it’s a rank protection template move with Norwich and Newcastle up next. I need Brentford attacking coverage and Toney is also on penalties.

I want to keep Antonio. Plenty are looking to sell with his returns on the wane. He is a strong template pick, even with tougher fixtures ahead. I don’t want to sell Vardy either ahead of Leeds United next. So my likely move is Toney in for Jimenez which brings me more in line with my template. It also gives me a boost to my bank balance and brings my kitty up to about 2M.

Selling Jimenez is a tough decision if I go through with it, but it’s about playing the Brentford fixtures and raising the extra cash as part of my short term planning. I could take a different path and instead of selling Jimenez to Toney, I could do Benrahma to Mbeumo, which still gets me Brentford coverage and still gets me the extra 1M extra cash. Something to consider.

With the extra money, I can then either go Vardy to Kane for those lovely spurs fixtures from GW12, or Vardy to Ronaldo, earlier than planned. Man Utd fixtures are simply irresistible from GW15. It’s not a bad entry point v Watford in GW12 if I decide to go early. The big question is whether Conte will have a transforming effect on Kane and Son. If they were to get an immediate bounce and replicate last seasons form, those fixtures don’t get any better from GW12.

If I decide to dodge Spurs, I could stick with Vardy and use that 2M to just about get Benrahma to Foden. That’s probably going to be out of reach by GW12. I don’t particularly want to do that move this week for a hit but it’s a consideration if it means missing out on Foden. But that would rather cut off the Spurs route. I would like to see Spurs play at Everton first in GW11 before committing to Spurs attack or diverting money into midfield with Foden.

Instead of selling Jimenez, I could go Vardy to Toney, and maybe get Benrahma to Son instead of Kane. Either way, if I get tempted by the Spurs fixture run, it’s Vardy that would be the cash cow. I don’t really want to lose Vardy v Leeds this week. And having a premium striker slot helps the transition to Ronaldo. So if Toney comes in, it’s very likely for Jimenez, and that means Kane not Son in GW12.

The rest of my squad I am happy with. Especially the back four of Trent, Cancelo, Rudiger and Chilwell.

My GW11 team:

My premium back four picks itself. Sanchez has a great fixture v Newcastle. I could bench Cancelo but the big games are often tight affairs. I don’t like benching premium defenders. So I will play Cancelo v Man Utd.

I have been using Livramento and Gallagher as my regular designated subs. But with Antonio and especially Benrahma facing Liverpool, it’s going to be a good option to play either Livramento v Villa , or Gallagher v Wolves. I am tempted to bench Benrahma this week and possibly play Livramento. It’s entirely possible that Pep or Tuchel will solve the problem and a defensive rotation will bring Gallagher and / or Benrahma in anyway.

Transfer summary:

Likely Jimenez to Toney

Captain probably stays on Salah. He is fixture proof.

One final word on transfers this week. If you don’t have to make a transfer and there is no clear perceived benefit, rolling the transfer and carrying two into the international break will be a powerful position to be in. As they say in Barnsley, “ if in doubt, do NOWT” !!

Good luck everyone !!!

Fantastic week thanks to Ramsdale and Reece James.

The Mount transfer was very unfortunate but it led to 6 Livramento points off the bench.

As frustrating as 13 Gallagher points on the bench are, the bench depth is clearly needed this year. Both Mbuemo and Mount missing this week as proof and almost getting Gallagher, who was my third sub. Surely he will build some team value after a week like that too.

This week is tough. I think many a manager will be looking at a few things with Antonio the topic of the week. 2 goals and 0 assists in his last 6 games played is definitely out of form. Tack on a very difficult 7 game run and he is now very droppable. Be prepared for multiple price decreases if you hold.

Keep double City Defence or move Dias to Chilwell? This is my big decision this week. If I roll I have a strong team this week. The reality is City could clean United but Chilwell’s form is undeniable so I likely make this move.

I will reassess Antonio, Mount, Vardy and if I want to change two of these into Kane or Son over this week too. If I were to do that it would be in GW12 when Vardy plays Chelsea. I am not sure Kane is better than Vardy for the other 3 fixtures up until GW15 when we want Ronaldo though so I doubt it is worth a hit. I may instead move Mount and Antonio to Son and Broja. This would be for a hit if I do the Chilwell move so it is something I need to consider this week.

Captain Obvious – Salah
Vice Vardy or Mbeumo

Usually I don’t do early transfers, but -James for Walker , triple up is on! Reece finished only 3 90 minutes games this season – 3 CS, 4 goals 1 assist , total 52 points! Price already gone up and will probably be 0.3m total this week.

GW10 Review

58 points with a green arrow from 168k to 107k

After a few bad weeks it was nice to get a decent rank improvement. It was disappointing to see Gallagher’s 13 points stuck first on my bench after easier fixtures in last few weeks have been blanks in the starting team. I also had a White CS there too.

In the end it was Ronaldo, now unpopular due to fixtures that saved the week for me with a 12 pointer. Captain Salah with just an assist (but everyone had him as cap anyway), Raphina (9), Benrahma (5) and the double Chelsea clean sheet were the other returners. Just an assist in the West Ham 4-1 win with 2 attacking players was a bit disappointing too.

GW11

1FT 0.0ITB

I have no major issues in the squad so I’m likely going to roll into the international break. With West Ham’s fixtures I’d like to jettison Benrahma with the idea of going back to him (or Bowen) when the fixtures improve again. For now he is on the bench.

United’s fixtures will improve again soon and Spurs also have a great run from GW12 onwards. I think getting Son in will be tricky for me however given I have such a big at the back team. I’d need to sacrifice one of the big defenders here for Livramento and also either Raphina or Gallagher to a 4.5ish and I’m not sure it is worth it. Either way 2FT seems valuable for the international break.

It’s a mixed bag week for me with some good fixtures for my team, but also a few attack vs defence (Ronaldo vs Cancelo and Antonio vs Alexander-Arnold) which means a bit of a ceiling. I’ll just have to stomach that though.

Captain Salah for now. There are no other contenders I could have too much confidence in this week.

Good luck
