I will roll this week.

If Ronaldo is out due to the MUN game being off due to the Covid outbreak then I may think of swapping him to Jesus or Lukaku for a week but it seems a waste of two transfers. We will see..

Captain Obvious Salah
Vice on Ronaldo

Good Luck!

Gameweek 16 review:

Well this will go down as the penalty weekend. Eight of them to be precise !! And a few dodgy ones too. The “big three” of Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea all needed spot kicks to see them to victory.

Dennis owners beat King owners in the battle of the budget Watford strikers, Jimenez saw red, that rock steady Chelsea defence is falling apart, Leicester put poor Newcastle to the sword, Cancelo picked up a suspension, and the hotly debated Salah v Ronaldo captaincy debate proved largely irrelevant, one point between them as they both scored once from the spot !!

My GW16 score and rank:

61 points. I played without a keeper this week. So 6/10 “returners”’ including a captain goal was a decent effort. Salah, Trent and Cancelo were all “template” rank neutral returns, but the “three R’s” of Ronaldo, Raphinha and Rudiger were all good differentials.

Ultimately my decision to play without a keeper and not swap out the inactive Sanchez for a hit for either Ramsdale or De Gea was punished with double figure hauls from both, which would have more than offset the -4 and was actually the difference between red and green this week !! Fine margins.

Down from 86k to 112k. It’s been a rocky road from the lofty heights of 30k in GW12. Four straight red arrows, not helped by my squad having more flags than the United Nations, meaning I have been fighting fires recently rather than making the proactive moves I want to be making. Please make my flags disappear. This is hard work.

My GW16 talking points:

It was about the worst possible outcome in the opening Friday game. I backed the wrong horse when King blanked and Dennis scored, capped off with a last minute penalty from Mbeumo, the only two players who could hurt me did. And of course my Covid stricken Toney would have taken the penalty if he had not been struck down !!

My team has been dealt a tough hand recently with injuries to Jota, Smith Rowe, Toney and MacArthur, coupled with my sub keeper Foster also being injured when Sanchez, of all keepers, was the unlucky one left without a game with Brighton’s game v Spurs wiped out !! It’s been an ongoing battle with the highly owned Ramsdale, so for Sanchez to miss out, an 11 pointer from Ramsdale was a big punch in the chops this week, especially as I turned down the chance to bring him in for Sanchez for a hit.

The odds on an Arsenal clean sheet were just above 40%, so statistically it favoured not taking the hit. 11 points at home to Southampton I did not see happening. Hindsight is a great thing but of course if I had made the switch it would have been a net +7 points, and aligned me to the template keeper. One factor in not doing it was it made my route back to Antonio in GW18 harder, but of course it was a significant call that ultimately defined my week.

There were other possible uses of my -4 I considered. I thought about Jota to Bernardo with Jota an injury doubt. Thankfully Jota seems ok after coming off the bench and looking lively so happy I stuck, despite the Bernardo assist. I very nearly took a hit to take out Raphinha on poor fixtures to buy Bowen for the Westham run. I am mightily relieved I didn’t as that would have been a nasty outcome this week !!

After owning Ronaldo in GW7, I have followed the “premium hopping” striker route to follow the fixtures that many others have too. A switch to Lukaku was cut short after one week by his injury, followed by three weeks of Vardy blanks, and four weeks of Kane pain. We should all have just stayed on Ronaldo after all !! It’s been a real trail of striker disappointment, especially when it meant committing big funds into attack that others punished who spread the cash instead. Ronaldo is just 55% owned at my rank level so he has the dream fixtures to project me forward if he can keep delivering. A nice 9 points to start off !!

My rise up the ranks had coincided with a “big at the back” success, which has hit the buffers somewhat in the last few weeks. Trent has continued his impressive scoring but Chelsea in particular have really lost their way, which has been costly with my double Chelsea defence a key reason for my resurgence until recent weeks.

After the impregnable Chelsea defence conceded just one goal in five games, they have well and truly come unstuck with no clean sheet in the last four. I broke Reece James who I brought in for the injured Chilwell, and he has scored just one point in four games, after a whopping 53 points in his previous four before I signed him !! I had been looking for an opportunity to move from Rudiger to the more attacking Alonso, but it’s Rudiger who seems to be the rampaging Chelsea defender right now. Two assists from open play this week was very nice !!

I seem to have broken Jota too. Both Jota and Smith Rowe being injured was a big blow this week.Jota had a cameo off the bench and could have scored. Smith Rowe stayed on the bench in a prime fixture having been declared fit to play. Very disappointing.

Especially so when that man Gallagher has gone from a defensive midfielder we all wanted to sell last week, to a striker who plays like Messi !! How many benched or sold him this week ? I sold Gallagher two weeks ago as part of my route to Jota. Now he seems electric. I would much prefer being on Gallagher than Smith Rowe right now. I need my Arsenal man to get back on the pitch and back amongst the goals.

The wavey haired enigmatic Palace guy Gallagher seems to be my nemesis, he hurt me with big points off the bench when I owned him, he blanked when I started him, and he is now putting in the dagger now I sold him !!

I was sitting on a small green arrow going into Sunday, but having no players in action on the final day, I was fearing not owning either Antonio or Bowen especially and half expected a Westham master class at Burnley. It was a huge relief to dodge that bullet, only for Gallagher to deliver a knock out blow instead.

So what next:

I have 0.6M in the bank and one free transfer.

At the time of writing, there are a few Covid outbreaks reported, so it’s going to be a tense wait until the Tuesday deadline to see if any games fall to the virus.

If any games are postponed, then that obviously changes all my plans below completely.

I currently have four flagged players on my bench so it’s fair to say I won’t be playing my bench boost !!! I will be checking on the status of Toney and MacArthur in particular with both close to returns. After smith Rowe was unused on Saturday, I am hoping he is ready to return to the starting line up as I definitely need him, and Jota too.

The 5th yellow card for Cancelo is a big blow when I have other flagged players, because instead of being able to make proactive changes, I might now have to transfer out a flagged bench player as I don’t particularly like the idea of making moves in my starting eleven and leaving a full non playing bench all flagged with so much uncertainty around. I want at least one playing sub. Another example of my run of injury flags stalling me in my carefully constructed plans.

My transfer thoughts:

My plan when I sold Antonio was to bring him back in GW18 when Westham play Norwich at the start of a great run of fixtures. He is still a “template player “ and highly owned so a rank risk. That plan involved switching out Raphinha who is on four difficult fixtures. And then moving Toney to Antonio. That would mean with budget restraints, Mbeumo and Gray as possible transfers in this week, to facilitate Antonio in next week. Or I could roll and do both next week.

But I am also now looking to leave a door open for Sanchez to Ramsdale who is also becoming a big rank problem. So the only way to create the funds would be to go even cheaper. I can get to Odegard but I don’t fancy the double up with Smith Rowe snd there is nothing else at the prices. It’s slim pickings if I want to downgrade Raphinha, as a route to Antonio, to also leave money for Ramsdale too.

I have been studying Antonio who has just one assist in the last seven games ( a lucky one too ) and only one goal in the last ten games. Dennis has outscored Antonio by 36 points over the last 13 gameweeks !! That’s really as bad as it gets. Really really bad. I am looking at whether I can cover those Westham fixtures instead by going for Bowen who seems to be matching him for attacking threat. It’s a big call to not go back to Antonio. So Raphinha to Bowen is the option.

That would just about leave funds to get me from Sanchez to Ramsdale. I would do Raphinha out this week as he has Man City away. And I have that Westham cover in place a week early before those great fixtures. Sanchez has Wolves this week who haven’t scored for four games and are missing Jimenez. It’s a good fixture. But then Sanchez faces trips to Man Utd and Chelsea. So the Sanchez to Ramsdale move probably fits better in GW18.

If I go Bowen instead of Antonio, these moves would leave me stuck with Toney, who is no longer template and is a player I am happy to move on. I quite like the look of dropping Toney to Dennis and doubling up on both Watford attackers. That would give me a nice cash boost and funds to upgrade Smith Rowe if he is not back on form and turn him into either Raphinha or Gallagher.

My problem this week, is if I have no playing bench, it might make my Raphinha to Bowen move dangerous . So that might have to wait one week. If I need some bench cover, I might do Toney to Dennis this week to give me 12 playing options if Toney is ruled out.

So a few options, not helped by my flag problems !!!

My GW17 team:

I will captain Salah at home to Newcastle. The Magpies are bad. Very bad.

The team shown is before transfers.

If it’s looking likely I have no playing bench, I will do Toney to Dennis . And start Livramento over Raphinha. Then Raphinha to Bowen in GW18.

If I am likely to have at least one sub, I will look to do Raphinha to Bowen this week and Sanchez to Ramsdale GW18.

I still might decide to go back to Antonio but I can see that costing me a hit over the next two weeks. Will Bowen be an easier route and cover Antonio instead and give me a better balance.

I will confirm my transfers on my Twitter page at least one hour before the deadline.

Good luck everyone !!!

My hope for Gameweek 17 is to roll the transfer, but so many covid rumours flying around I might need a transfer to field 11. If I get the all clear this will by my team – also happy for Broja to cover from bench though fear his muscle injury won’t heal.

Back to Salah captain this week
