 GW36 Summary

After a strong ascent into the upper levels of the FPL ranks, I was approaching GW36 with some real fears, mainly due to the lack of Liverpool in my team and specifically Salah for their fixture against Stoke. Fortunately for me, the Reds drew blanks which provided a great start to the FPL weekend with my rank dropping dramatically less than anticipated from that game. However, things failed to really kick on from there when a strong green arrow looked very possible.

Only one of my double-ups at the back paid off after Man U surprisingly conceded against a poor Arsenal team while Burnley kept their clean sheet against Brighton. Further forward, my transfers in of Sterling and Kane came good with a hat-trick of assists and a goal respectively. However, I was a little a disappointed in the ultimate result from my triple Spurs attack. After the early goal from Alli I was hopeful that Spurs would bag a few goals, but in the end, I had to be satisfied with a single goal apiece from Alli and my captain Kane.

Elsewhere, some issues were created by this week which I will come to when I speak about my team for the doubles. Nonetheless, a gameweek result of a small green arrow when I was anticipating a significant red one was a pleasant surprise and I am still on course for a top 5k finish.

GW37 Team

Looking at my team for the last double gameweek of the season, there are two major issues – the form of Leicester and the minutes of Willian. Ideally, I’d be able to rectify these problems by bulking up my quantity of City assets. Chilwell was purchased at a very cheap price so it doesn’t seem worth replacing him which leaves Willian and Vardy to replace; Gross is also an option to be removed given his fixtures.

The immediate dilemma is that out of the three mentioned players, Vardy is the one that I’d prefer to keep, but Jesus would also be the best City option in my opinion. If I were to replace Willian, then Sané would be the man to come in; in both cases I need to raise a bit of cash for the player that I want. In order to do this, I have three options to replace Gross – Gundogan & Fernandinho from City who would have minutes issues or the more secure and cheaper choice of Ki at Swansea.

As I write, I am leaning towards bringing Gundogan in to maximise City coverage in the hope that he starts at least one of the games with penalty duties. That transfer will enable me to bring in Jesus who is looking highly essential following the injury to Lukaku. I would expect that means that even more of the managers around me will bring in the Brazilian, so I need to protect myself from his returns. The importance of this is increased by my lack of triple captain chip when many other managers will be able to play theirs and could choose to go for Jesus.

Speaking of captaincy, it’s going to be an interesting dilemma this week. As it is for many others, the choice is between Kane and Jesus; I discounted Sterling due to a worry about his minutes. This will be a decision that will go to right to the deadline with Jesus having the form and fixtures, but Kane has the history and explosiveness. With my current rank of 3k, I am happy to consolidate my rank which suggests I should just go with Kane, however I actually think Jesus may be the better option.

The lack of chip will hinder me this week, so the captaincy choice is even more important than usual, but hopefully the armband will end up in the right place. Similar to last week, if I can keep my place in the top 5k, then I will be happy with the results.

Best of luck to everyone for the double gameweek and may your arrows be green!

GW36 review

After the joys of a 5 figure GW35 weekly rank thanks to my lovely Free Hit team, I returned to the ignominy of the shower of despair that had formed my disastrous GW34 lineup. And sure enough they let me down again this week. To be fair, I have to shoulder the blame myself – the lack of a decent premium striker once again costing me dearly. The week was only salvaged by the consolation of at least making a shrewd transfer. Sterling came in for Hazard for a net gain of 5 points and a degree of rank protection which stopped me dropping out of the top 100k just a week after I’d worked myself in.

The rest of the week’s scoring was pretty dire. My only other returns came from Lowton and Sanchez. The rest of my defence managed 5 points between the 3 of them, my strikers combined for a grand total of 6 points and captain Mo Salah was No Salah after he surprisingly bungled an early one-on-one and looked rather un-Salah like for the rest of the match. The final nail in the coffin came in the Spurs game, where Son blanked and Spurs’ high ownership players all returned. Yep, a week best forgotten

GW37 Team

The final double gameweek is upon us and it’s time to play my remaining chip – the powerful Bench Boost option. As stated above, I’ve got numerous problems in my squad so I made the decision well before GW36 that I was going to chuck some hits at this week in a bid to attack the fixtures as best as possible.

First up my strikeforce. Barnes has bizarrely been one of my better signings over the last few weeks, but with only an away fixture to Arsenal this week he has to go. I’m also going to axe Vardy – he’s been steady the last few weeks, but The Foxes quite frankly looked like they were in holiday mode as they were blown away by Palace last week. For the rest of my team, I’ve 2 non-double players in midfield in Ibe and Salah, 1 non-double defender in Lowton and at present 1 non-playing defender in Stephens. I need to cull a few of these. It’s been a tough week deciding on my options. The good news is that I have £4.2m in the bank to help me along the way!

In the end, the lure of Kane and Jesus is too much for me to resist. Both have a great chance of getting 2 games each and I feel I have to cover Kane as he’ll be heavily backed as both a captain and a triple captain this week. So they’re both in for Barnes and Vardy. This leaves me having to free up some funds form elsewhere. The obvious place to do this is from midfield by selling either Sanchez or Salah. I can’t part with the Egyptian as he bids to close out the Golden Boot race, so Sanchez goes. I suspect Jose may rest him for at least one of the remaining 3 fixtures anyway with the FA Cup final in mind. I’ve also decided to change one of Stephens or Lowton. Lowton is at least playing and with one eye on next week, has a decent GW38 fixture. I’ve therefore decided to hold him and lose Stephens, who has a good chance of ending on nil pois for GW37 and GW38.

So it’s 4 transfers and a -12, Kane and Jesus are in leaving me £11.7m for the other 2 players – a midfielder and a defender. I’ve decided to triple up on City and Spurs; Gundogan comes in for Sanchez in midfield and I’ve gone for the most gametime secure Spurs defender in Vertonghen to replace Stephens. This gives me 12 DGW players plus Salah, Ibe and Lowton. Probably not many points coming from the latter 2 but hey, if they get 4 between them it’s effectively another goal! For captain this week it’s a straight shoot out between Kane and Jesus. My heart says Jesus – City could run up a cricket score in both games, but my head says Kane and at present the armband sits on Sir Harold.

Good luck for the penultimate gameweek of the season folks and don’t forget the deadline is Friday night this week. I hope your arrows are green!

Bench boost in play! Team pretty well set up but as usual for me, struggling with transfers and captain.

Salah is out and Eriksen is in.   Bad planning on wildcard a few weeks back means I’ll need to take a hit to get back but by going Eric means I can do it next week using Kennedy to a cheapie to do it.

Mikael has played his 2nd wildcard, FH and BB. The TC is still intact intact.

I’m 21 pt behind my ML leader and have a much better team (+Auba, Jesus, Pogba). He will probably TC Kane. I think l’ll play safe and do the same and hope that the rest of my team will close the gap…?!

Good luck everyone
