Introduction

This is part 1 of the FPL managers who contribute to the FFGeek site with good histories who show their teams each week. This will give people a feel for what other managers are doing. It’s a fairly informal thing with no obligation on anyone and these teams may change at anytime before the deadline without further notice. It won’t cover transfers in real time either. It’s just to give an idea of the trends for the week no more.  The teams are shown as their “final-ish” teams so they could change.  Where they have twitter accounts I have shown this and they may update them there or on our Slack Channel which is part of our subscription Patreon site but this is not guaranteed

Ben Wooton

Ben’s last 4 seasons overall rank were 5k, 61k, 26k and 31k.

GW5 points: 71 -4 (FPL average 60) Total points: 299, Overall Rank: 887k, green arrow:  57k Team Value: £101.4m

Here is my team for next weekend

I have moved for Kane for Adams.  Mainly for his good run of games.
I plan to move him on in game week 9.

Otherwise it feels OK, lacking Liverpool options like Mane and Salah but I can wait I think.

Bench looks average at best now with rotation concerns and feels like I need
to get cover. Ideally Soucek for Reed at this point.

Kris O

Kris’s last 4 seasons overall rank were 39k, 44k, 46k and 23k

GW5 points: 95 on wildcard (FPL average 60) Total points: 283, Overall Rank: 1,520k, green arrow:  1,926k Team Value: £101.2m

So at last a good week which gave me 95 points – over 50% of my total score (188) at the start of the gameweek!

My wildcard decisions worked, well certainly in the immediate gameweek – everyone bar Grealish got a return, with his three points matching Chilwell’s return.

I feel good about the team over the next four weeks, so plan to minimise transfers and roll over two for the next international break. The obvious gap is a Chelsea attacker – I’ll keep my eye on how they develop over the next few weeks.

I’m tempting fate writing this on Tuesday, especially with European games to pay, but I plan to roll the transfer for now. Captain Salah.

GW5 review

Yet another crazy week in this madcap start to the season! Controversy, comebacks, stunning goals, penalty drama and the usual dose of VAR (sigh.) The Premier League certainly isn’t leaving us short of incident in these strange times. And speaking of strangeness, it’s still an odd world in FPL and it’s been a weekend of extreme points and rankings swings for many.

For my lot, I was certainly lagging behind at the end of Saturday. 3/4 returners in the early game was ok, but none was a big haul and I was cursing at 5pm as the recently sold Werner ran the Saints defence ragged for 16 points. I then had no-one in the late games – no biggie initially as City and Arsenal didn’t affect my ranking that much in the end and it looked like I’d be treading water come 10pm as the game headed into the dying minutes at St James’ Park. 10 minutes later, Rashford and Fernandes had run riot and I was sitting on a GW Rank of 5.6m and a 400k ranking drop going into Sunday.

Sunday started frustratingly as Palace agonisingly failed to hold on a clean sheet leaving Mitchell with a paltry point and I was nervous heading into the 4.30pm game having transferred in Son and Kane. Thankfully, I got my call right as Captain Kane banged for 32 with an added 13 from Son though West Ham’s comeback at the end was amazing (that Lanzini goal!) Then there was then the added bonus of 2 returns on Monday night – a clean sheet (minus a yellow card) for Taylor and a somewhat fortuitous goal for Jimenez plus a couple of bonus for good measure.

So all in all, 7/11 returners this week plus a 30+ captaincy haul for a GW rank under 1 million. It needed it though for a healthy green – I’ve seen some teams doing the rounds this week with 5/11 returners including a positive Captaincy haul who still ended up with nasty red arrows. At the start of the season, I said that this year we’ve very much got to be prepared to take the rough with the smooth and that nearly every week I expect there to be a number of big hitters who will haul. You can’t own everyone, so don’t be down on missing out on some of these – focus more on the decision-making process you are taking. I still stand by this statement and luckily my decisions come out ok in the end this week, though I’m clear in the mindset that this can’t be the case every time.

GW6 Team

1FT and £1.5m in the bank.

I’m fairly happy with the core of my team now for the next 3 weeks as I angle towards a GW9 Wildcard so it’s time to think about tidying up the rough edges. My squad now covers a lot of the 10 Top Managers template, indeed I commented on our What’s App group when the FFGeek Contributor’s Tracker Team came out on Saturday morning that my team was boringly quite template in this regard. I’m lucky I guess that I’ve settled pretty quickly onto guys like Calvert Lewin, James Rodriguez, Kane and Salah so I need now to look at players who are under-performing and where I can make some changes.

The first area of underperformance is definitely defence. 6 clean sheets from 21 isn’t great and there have been very few attacking returns on top of this as well (just 2 assists.) I’ve got double Southampton in McCarthy and Walker-Peters = 4/6 of my clean sheets have come from here. Then there’s Trent – he’s expensive and in a Liverpool defence that’s under-performing in terms of clean sheets and also seriously hit by the injuries to Van Dijk and Alisson. That being said, bar 2 great Pickford saves he would have picked up a goal and an assist in the Merseyside Derby and they’ve Sheffield United at home up next so he’s not going anywhere for the moment even if Robertson does look the better Liverpool full-back option at present. So that leaves Dier, Mitchell and Taylor. Mitchell is staying, purely on the basis of his price as for the others and if Dier is confirmed as out this week he’s a prime target for a sale. Otherwise, Burnley have 2 terrible fixtures next so Taylor he’s high on the out list too.

Second area of underperformance is the 4th / 5th midfielder. I’ve been stubborn with Soucek so far as his stats just scream that he’s going to score soon, but his next 2 fixtures suck big time. Then there’s cheapie Bissouma, who has actually scored this season and has a great fixture next up against West Brom. I’ve got to be realistic here – this is a cheap midfield spot, I can’t expect miracles but there is scope to step up in price here a little with my £1.5m in the bank. Finally there’s my 3rd striker. Calvert Lewin speaks for himself and getting Kane in for Werner this week was a break-even move on paper but in the end as I would have Captained Salah had I not bought Kane turned out to be profitable. Jimenez though has been disappointing. I took a hit in GW3 to bring him in for Adams and it certainly hasn’t paid off with Adams returning a goal and an assist since (even if he did play against Kepa in the game he scored!) versus just a solitary goal in 3 for Jimmy.

Targets for transfers in these areas in look fairly straightforward (in theory!) For defence, it’s difficult to overlook Aston Villa’s upturn in form here and they’ve got a great fixture list ahead. Konsa at £4.6m could be a steal and Martinez at 4.8m is fast looking like a set and forget keeper. Similarly in attack, Grealish, Barkley, McGinn and Watkins all present viable options long term. Otherwise, in defence I liked the look of Reguilon in the West Ham match (if you ignore the last 10 minutes) and Chilwell looks good going forward for Chelsea, though The Blues have a tough GW6 trip to Old Trafford and their defence isn’t exactly inspiring at present.

I think what happens this week hinges on Dier’s fitness. If he is fit for Saturday, I’ll probably keep him in and change either Taylor for Konsa or McCarthy for Martinez. If he’s injured, I’ll replace him with either Konsa or Reguilon. I won’t be making any moves until Friday afternoon though and I’ll post my team on Twitter after I’ve finalised it (remember it’s a Friday evening deadline this week too.) For my team, I think I’ll start Bissouma over Soucek this week, with Walker Peters also on the bench along with either Taylor or Mitchell depending on how my transfer goes. Captain will be Salah at home to a struggling Blades side.

All the best this week folks!
