FPL Tips 21/22

Edd Murrell

Ed’s last 2 season’s ORs were an incredible 260th and 22k

Goalkeeper

I think Sanchez represents good value and Brighton have proven themselves to be a defensively solid team in the Premier League. Hopefully that continues this season. Brighton’s early fixtures are good from a defensive perspective so that’s a plus if I did decide to go for an early wildcard but generally I view the GK slot as a long-term choice.

Defenders

Alexander Arnold and Shaw are must-haves in my opinion. They both have good fixtures and both have high points ceilings. I like Digne’s fixtures and he is very capable of offensive returns. He is a player that has burned me in the past so that pick is definitely not set in stone as of yet.

Midfielders

Salah is a highly-proven FPL asset and will likely remain in my team throughout the season providing he remains injury-free. Fernandes has proven he is capable of consistent FPL returns but I do worry about how the new rules around penalties will effect his FPL returns. Jota is a risky pick but could be a HUGE differential if he can get the minutes. I think Barnes represents good value for his price providing he can get the minutes and is played in the right formation (4-2-3-1). I’m not sold on Raphinha as of yet and I don’t like his early fixtures but you can’t deny he represents good value at 6.5.

Forwards

Antonio and Toney both start with decent fixtures and look like good value picks. Wilson is another forward I am considering.

Formation

So my current draft is centred around a 3-5-2 formation but I am considering moving to 3-4-3. The reason for this is I believe the 4.5 midfielders represent much better value than the 4.5 forwards. However, the 3-5-2 formation could prove more lucrative with midfielders yielding +1 point per goal as well as a point for clean sheets.

Cheers,
Edd

Harry Vernon

Picking a team for the first GW is always tough. There are so many questions about new players, new managers and promoted teams. To compound it all, we have just £100m to pick our squad when many FPL managers will have finished last season with a team value of at least £105m.

The challenge is to pick enough options for captaincy, some enablers and cover popular price points to be able to react to bandwagons.

GKs and Defence

Starting at the back, ideally, I like to a have a pair or cheap rotating goalies and another pair of cheap rotating defenders. Each season one cheap team defends well.

Sanchez/Bachmann gives a run up to GW10 of

AVL, WAT, EVE bre nor cry lee nor eve SOU

White/Ayling gives a run up to GW11 of

bre EVE bur NOR bur TOT WAT CRY WOL nor WAT

However, Watford’s defence has not been that convincing so I may well save a 0.5m and have a 4.0m goalie alongside Sanchez.

I have Trent Alexander Arnold and Shaw as perma defenders. News has just broken that Robertson is injured. His replacement Tsimikas is just 4.0m and will be in my team if he nailed for the early fixtures.

Midfield and Forwards

Last season I started without Mo Salah and got punished by his hattrick against Leeds. This season he will be in my side. Bruno Fernandes will be my other captaincy option. There are many options in the 7.5m range. At the moment Greenwood is in my team with Rashford out. This could well change as more information comes through. The last midfield spot is Raphinha who looks under-priced.

I am undecided between 343 formation or a 352 at the moment. On the plus side with a 343, I can have Norwich’s Gilmour who will play regularly rather than the likes of Obafemi.

That would give me Toney to start the season instead of say Benrahma or similar priced midfielder.

Up top Villa’s first 3 fixtures look great. Ings is on penalties and no longer plays for Southampton so I feel much happier picking him now as a Portsmouth supporter

Joining them is Antonio. He is a great player if he can avoid injury.
