Can Harry Kane become the top scorer in the Premier League?

There can be little doubt that Harry Kane was one of the shining stars of the 2018 World Cup. But whilst his six goals for England helped the striker win the Golden Boot award in Russia, it seems that he faces a much tougher challenge in this season’s Premier League.

The 25-year old striker has currently scored five goals in ten games for Tottenham Hotspur, and while that isn’t a poor return, Kane is lagging behind the likes of Chelsea’s Eden Hazard with 7 and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and even Brighton’s Glenn Murray with 6 goals in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot award.

So far, Kane has managed to score against Fulham, Brighton and Huddersfield (2), all sides that were in the lower parts of the premier league table when Spurs played them.  The exception being his goal against a currently under performing Man Utd team.  With 45%  of Kane’s shots being on target, it would seem from that statistic that things should be going well for the centre forward. However his shots per game have reduced to 2.9 from 5 per game last season which is an exceptionally worrying statistic.   There have been many commentators suggesting that Kane might be suffering from something of a ‘burn out’ as a result of having played no less than 175 games since 2015.

Ever since Kane received a nasty ankle injury in a game against Bournemouth last season, there have been concerns that the star hasn’t quite had the pace that’s become one of his assets.  Many pundits are also saying he’s dropping deeper this season almost as if he’s a number 10 rather than a centre forward.

Spurs loss to Man City where he only had the 1 shot and miscontrolled a great 1 on 1 situation with Ederson summed up how things have been going so far this season.

It’s not just the concerns about burning out that could hamper Kane’s ambition to win his third Golden Boot award in the Premier League. Whilst Tottenham have shown that they can play some exceptional football this season, they have often appeared to lack the killer instinct and it’s this inconsistency that could spell trouble for Kane’s goalscoring ambitions.

The side’s embarrassing defeat by Watford and laboured 1-0 wins over Cardiff and West Ham shows that there’s plenty of work to be done in the Tottenham camp and it’s going to take something special for Kane to catch up to the phenomenal 30 goals that he scored in the Premier League last season.

In order to rate Kane’s chances, we did some research at the sports betting resource betting.org and discovered that many of the top bookmakers featured here still think that the Tottenham star could be in with a good chance.

Kane is currently in second place in the odds to be the Premier League’s top goalscorer. It’s little surprise to find that Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero is just ahead of him in the odds, and the Argentine star looks to be in fine form with six goals in the side’s current campaign including one in gameweek 9 against Burnley.

Whilst Mo Salah has also come in for plenty of criticism this season, the Egyptian striker should never be ruled out as he is on five Premier League goals and got the well deserved winner against Huddersfield Town in gameweek 9 and another in the win over Cardiff in gameweek 10. And with other top forwards like Eden Hazard in the running, it seems like Harry Kane has got his work cut out given his current form
