The schedule

The schedule ranking is based on 21/22 stats. The schedule ranks the teams by averaging their Goals against and their expected goals against. It is not adjusted for upcoming fixtures

Player values and stats were as of Wednesday 8th December

There’s a stat in the schedule focusing on the Defensive performances so far this season. It’s called “xCS” or expected clean sheets. The stat counts the number of clean sheets that should have happened if a team has an xG against of less than 1.0. You can see these each gameweek in my gameweek analysis posts

The key part of the article is the transfer suggestions for this week where I’ve tried to balance a good entry point, defensive strength of the team and upcoming fixture easiness.

Player suggestions for GW16

Here’s some transfer suggestions for GW16 where, as I said above, I’ve tried to balance a good entry point, defensive strength of the team and upcoming fixture easiness. You can see the fixtures on the fixture ease schedule below

Man City

With 5 assists in his 15 starts Cancelo is the obvious attacking pick. He’s also started every game and played 90 minutes in 14 of them. He also has a pretty good record of not coming on as sub for those annoying 1 pointers when he doesn’t start. Only once this happened last season in 28 PL appearances.

After that it’s difficult. Dias at £6.0m and Walker at £5.5m offer as much gametime security as you can expect from the Pep defence but even Dias has not started in 2 of the games

Laporte has started 3 of the last 4 and has reasonable attacking potential at £5.5m if you want to save money at the expense of more gametime risk.

None of Dias, Cancelo and Laporte started in the midweek UCL match which is a positive sign.

Reasonable fixtures and a great entry point v Wolves but this as much about being the leagues best defence.

Chelsea

It’s easy to look at the Watford and especially the West Ham game and think “what a defensive shambles” and we should dump Chelsea but for me that’s not the case.

In the 6 games before the West Ham game their expected goals against were less than 1. In James and Alonso they have 2 of the premium attacking defenders in the league. 4 of the next 5 games could easily return clean sheets

If you want to go very cheap I suspect the hamstring injury to Chalobah will increase £4.8m Christensen’s gametime over the coming weeks but he could still be rotated with Azpilicueta and Marlang Sarr

Liverpool

I would suggest to everyone to try and stretch their FPL budget to Alexander Arnold. His PPM is 7.6 and he’s returned a goal, assist or clean sheet in 9 of his 13 starts this season which is phenomenal consistency.

If you just want to go cheap and cover the clean sheet then I’d go for £4.9m Matip who currently has a PPM of 3.9. He’s started 11 of the 15 games. He will be rotated and has competition from Konate and Gomez if he ever returns to the fold.

Fixtures are a bit mixed and it could be a tricky entry point vs Villa who are rejuvenated under Gerrard.

Crystal Palace

Despite conceding in their last 4, 2 of those games saw expected clean sheets so all is not lost. Unfortunately the GK has not covered himself in glory as you will see in the expected saves schedule below. There’s also little attacking potential in the backline as well so it’s a cheap clean sheet rotation pick with 3 good fixtures next. I personally would go for Guehi

West Ham

Does a good run of fixtures outweigh the current injuries in the defence. Unfortunately cheapie £4.0m Johnson is injured who would be my first choice.

The question is how much you want to save in price and accept gametime risk. £4.4m Masuaku I have my doubts will play but he’s a great attacking option if he does. £4.3m Diop is safe and you think he will now partner Dawson in the defence. £4.7m Coufal though seems the option to me at the moment who’s the safest.

Burnley is one of the best possible entry points

Man Utd

A total fixture and value punt in £4.4m Dalot is my pick here. Man Utd have been terrible defensively but in their 4-2-2-2 will rely alot on the FBs for attacking width and Dalot has the attacking potential that you could possibly say Wan-Bissaka doesn’t. Starting the last 2 games and a new manager in post is hardly a cast iron guarantee of gametime security but nothing in this punt is guaranteed

The Fixture Ease Schedule

Here’s the next 6 fixtures as ranked by the ease of the attacking teams they face

GK goals saved over expected goals saved per 90 from Fbref

In essence this shows the form shot stoppers so far this season. It compares the per 90 goals saved vs expected goals saved so is a variation on the save% table I normally give. I think you’ll find it quite interesting.
