Rob Reid with his fantasy premier league gameweek 2 player picks

Hi everyone and welcome to Gameweek 2 Player Picks.

You may recall that last season I ran a weekly article where I selected an Ace, Banker and Joker pick each week. This season I’ve slightly changed the format but I’ll be making my picks along similar lines. The Ace will be a form player who I would heavily favour for captain this week. The Banker is a fixture pick and has an eye to the next few gameweeks. The Joker will be a differential pick where the only condition is that they must have less than 10% ownership.

I’ll be keeping an eye on how each player performs each week, I won’t be following the Banker pick for 4 weeks this week like I did last season though I may select them in consecutive weeks. I’ll also be running a weekly average on how well the selections perform each week. Finally, there will be Guest Picks again from time to time and I’ll be running some Twitter Polls throughout the season where Fantasy Football Geek readers and Twitter followers will be able to vote on who we’re going to pick in each category – keep an eye out for these as the season goes on and feel free to vote!

Here goes – wish me luck!

Gameweek 1 picks

Banker – Sergio Aguero – 2 points

Ace – Mo Salah – 8 points (1 goal, midfield clean sheet)

Joker – Diogo Jota – 5 points (1 assist)

Gameweek 2 picks

Banker – Benjamin Mendy £6.1m MCI – HUD

The Frenchman served notice of what we all missed due to his injury last season – an FPL masterclass. A defender playing for a premium team who is effectively an auxiliary left-winger and who even popped up as a centre-forward on occasion. What’s not to love? This week’s fixture looks a good bet for a clean sheet if nothing else, but don’t be surprised if he adds another attacking return to the 2 assists he got last week. Hell, he’s even a nice left-field captain shout!

Ace – Christian Eriksen £9.5m TOT – FUL

Quite a few contenders for the Ace pick this week, but the usual uncertainty surrounding Man City’s line-up means I’ve gone for The Dane. He was unlucky not to a register a return against Newcastle, but will fancy his chances against newly promoted Fulham. The Cottagers defence is much changed from the backline that won through play-offs last season and Crystal Palace exposed the fact that it will take time for them to gel last Saturday. I’m backing Spurs and Eriksen to show up the same flaws again this weekend.

Joker (Picked by the FFG Community)

Roberto Pereyra £6.1m WAT – bur – A big thank you to the 656 who voted in our Twitter Poll this week and the winning choice for our Joker is Roberto Pereyra with 33% of the vote. The Argentine had sign posted a good start to the season with 3 goals and an assist in his 6 games at the end of last season.  He capped a stunning performance last weekend with both goals in the 2-0 win over Brighton, the first of which was an absolute belter. He looks good value at £6.1m in a creative looking Watford side and he’ll certainly pick up a hefty bandwagon at that price should he return again against Burnley this weekend.

That’s all from me this week folks and good luck!
