Rob Reid with his fantasy premier league GW33 player picks

Hi everyone and welcome to Gameweek 33 Player Picks.

You may recall that last season I ran a weekly article where I selected an Ace, Banker and Joker pick each week. This season I’ve slightly changed the format but I’ll be making my picks along similar lines. The Ace will be a form player who I would heavily favour for captain this week. The Banker is a fixture pick and has an eye to the next few gameweeks. The Joker will be a differential pick where the only condition is that they must have less than 10% ownership.

I’ll be keeping an eye on how each player performs each week. After the success of GW1 & 2s Bankers, I’ve decided to go back on my original plan and I’ll now be following the Banker pick for 4 weeks again, like I did last season. I’ll also be running a weekly average on how well the selections perform each week. Finally, there will be Guest Picks again from time to time and I’ll be running some Twitter Polls throughout the season where Fantasy Football Geek readers and Twitter followers will be able to vote on who we’re going to pick in each category – keep an eye out for these as the season goes on and feel free to vote!

Here goes – wish me luck!

Gameweek 33 Picks

Banker – Jan Valery (SOU 4.1m) – LIV

This may look like an odd pick, choosing a defender for a team near the bottom who’s next fixture is at home to title-chasing Liverpool. But please bear with me on this one, this is about the next few weeks and not necessarily just GW33. First up, he’s got a fixture this week; that’s a good start. Next up he has a double in GW35 – you’re therefore getting 5 fixtures over the next 4 gameweeks. Next up he’s a budget enabler – 4.1m for a playing defender is a snip (there’s also Bednarek at 4.0m for the Saints as well if you want to save even more!) Finally, he plays effectively as a wing-back so you get the chance of attacking returns as well as goals against Man United and Spurs show (which is why I’d favour paying 0.1m more for Valery over Bednarek.) True, I’m not expecting much from him this week but if you’re Wildcarding soon, he’s a great filler for you!

Ace – Jamie Vardy – (LEI 9.0m) – hud

Looking at each week’s fixtures, I always try and pick a game where I think there is a potential for one team to comfortably beat the other. Such a fixture then becomes a key part of my captain pick and also my Ace Player Pick. It’s sad to say, but often in the Premier League one or two teams get detached from the rest, I think of the likes of Villa a couple of seasons back or Derby even longer ago. Well this season I’ve regularly looked for the team who’s playing already relegated Huddersfield and it’s probably no surprise that Vardy is this week’s ace pick. He’s got 5 goals and an assist in his last 5 games, taking his season tally to 13 and 4 of each respectively and he seems to still be feeling the new manager bounce that so often gives him a boost in form. To me, he looks the best striker pick for this week and it would be a brave man who would bet on the rock bottom Terriers to keep the Foxes at bay this week!

Joker – Youri Tielemans (LEI 6.1m) – hud

Following on from Vardy, it’s again probably no surprise that I’ve doubled up on Leicester this week with the 1.3% owned Belgian star Tielemans my Joker pick for this week’s Blank. He’s certainly hit the ground running since his move to The King Power with 1 goal and 4 assists in his last 5 matches. There are question marks about whether this form may continue, based on the fact that he struggled at Monaco but his form at Anderlecht was decent (albeit in a vastly less competitive league) with 35 goals and 31 assists over 185 appearances. Is he a poor man’s Kevin De Bruyne? I guess we’ll find out over the next few weeks. Either way, I think he’s a good shout for this week and at 6.1m could be good value moving forward.

That’s all from me this week on Player Picks, best of luck for this week everyone!
