Rob Reid (aka the FPL Vet) with his fantasy premier league gameweek 3 player picks

Hi and welcome to my Gameweek 3 Player Picks. For each gameweek, I’ll be picking out 3 players in distinct player selection categories.

One Banker – this will take form and the fixture ease schedule into account and is a player who I think is a must for the next few gameweeks and should provide a steady stream of points.

One Ace – a player who I think has a good chance of scoring big this week. I’ll take form, this weeks fixtures and the bookies odds into account here.

One Joker – a player who is a bit of punt but I think may surprise a few people. Might be a low ownership player, someone coming back from injury or just a bit of a gut feeling on my part – there will be no evidence base on this one!

I’ll keep a tally each week of how things are going – I’ll analyse the Banker over 4 GWs, the other 2 will just be on a weekly basis. Wish me luck and here goes!

Gameweek 2 Review

GW1 Banker – Fraser Forster (Southampton)
GW1 – 6 points
GW2 – 3 points (2 save points, 2 goals conceded) – a disappointing performance from the Saints backline, shipping 2 goals against 10 men. The save points were a small consolation.

GW2 Banker- Romelu Lukaku (Man U)
GW2 – 6 points (1 goal) – quieter than Pogba or Mkhitaryan, he was almost used as a foil in this game making a lot of decoy runs. When he got his chance though he buried it comprehensively. I expect he’ll be a front-runner on this weeks Captain Poll.

Ace – Sadio Mane (Liverpool) – 8 points (1 goal, midfield clean sheet)
Dispelled rumours of a pre-match injury with a solid display and the winning goal. Perhaps disappointing that he didn’t accrue any bonus points. I expect he’ll keep producing consistently, although there may be some rotation, as Salah being benched might suggest.

Joker – Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield) – 10 points (1 goal, midfield clean sheet, 2 bonus ) – Huddersfield are getting their feet under the FPL table and won a tight game against promoted rivals Newcastle to stay 100% so far. Mooy was a key player and cooly slotted home the only goal. He’s well priced and looks a keeper when fixtures are ok and possibly even when they aren’t.

Gameweek 3 Picks

Banker – Christian Eriksen ( Spurs £9.6m – BUR)

3 assists in 2 games puts the Dane onto the banker list this week with some nice fixtures to come. First up it’s Burnley at Wembley where Spurs will be favourites to overcome their national stadium hoodoo. With set piece responsibility and ownership now over 20%, I’m backing Eriksen to continue his run over the next few weeks.

Ace – Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£8.2m Man U – LEI)

Two 4-0 wins mean that United assests have to be on everyone’s radar at the moment. It was a toss-up betwen Mkhitaryan and Pogba to be fair but I’ve opted for the Armenian. 4 assists in 2 games is far more like the form that made him the Bundesliga player of the year for Borussia Dortmund in 15-16. He has strong stats for key passes and attempts and has occupied an advanced position on his heat map in his opening 2 fixtures. I’m backing him this week to continue against a Leicester defence that looked less than water-tight away from home in GW1.

Joker – Richarlison (Watford £6m – BRI)

Watford have certainly turned some heads with their good start, but maybe we shouldn’t be too surprised after new manager Silva so nearly achieved an improbable great escape with a limited Hull squad last season. He certainly has an eye for a good signing and Richarlison looks to fall under thus category. It’s a goal and an assist in his first 2 fixtures and a good fixture home to struggling Brighton this week. Couple this with only 2.4% ownership and he looks a nice differential.

That’s it from me on Player Picks this week. Good luck everyone!
