3 Teams Likely to be Relegated from the Premier League in 2018/19
The focus on the premier league is often on the title race and the top 4 positions for Champions League qualifications. However for a huge number of supporters their main concern is avoiding relegation from the Premier League. Huddersfield
2nd bottom of the table and having scored the least goals with 10 in their 17 games, 4 less than any other team, it’s obvious where Huddersfield’s problems are. The lowest goalscorers in the premier league will invariably get relegated although Huddersfield avoided it last season as the joint lowest goalscorers with Swansea who were relegated. However that was with 28 goals. They seem some distance away from that as a final season total.
Huddersfield just can’t score goals and in only 1 game, the 2-0 win over Wolves, have they scored more than 1 goal in a match. In fact they’ve been scoreless in 8 of their 17 matches this season.
Last season, on their entry to the league, they bought Lauren Depoitre and Steve Mounie in order to give them the goals they hoped would keep them in the Premier league. However, that hasn’t happened this season and neither have scored a goal despite playing a combined 1600 minutes.
Comparatively their defence has fared better. They’ve conceded 28 goals. 5 teams have conceded more.
If Huddersfield are to have any chance of staying up they need to find a goalscorer in the January transfer window. However strikers who can hit the ground running in the Premier League don’t come cheap and it would be a massive gamble for Huddersfield to commit significant resources to try and solve the goalscoring problem in a tricky window for effective transfer dealings.
Burnley
It’s hard to imagine how a team who qualified for the Europa League last season with a 7th placed finish can now be in the relegation spots after 17 games.
Last season they conceded 39 goals, less than anyone outside the top 6 and had 12 clean sheets, more than anyone outside the top 6. This season they have already conceded 33 goals and have only 4 clean sheets.
The defensive problems were no more obvious than in the 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace in gameweek 14 where they conceded 29 shots against one of the leagues poorer attacking sides. That was more shots than Crystal Palace had in a game since 2003/04
The last 2 games have seen better performances with a 1-0 win over Brighton and a last minute 1-0 loss to Spurs. However there’s alot to do before they can think about safety from relegation as they’re not exactly tearing it up on the attacking side either. Only 3 sides have scored less than their 15 goals so far.
Fulham
Fulham are currently on course to set all sorts of records in a season where defensive disaster doesn’t even come close to describing the first 17 games as they sit bottom of the Premier League.
They conceded 42 goals in the first 17 games. If they were to continue at that rate they would concede 93 goals after 38 matches. The most goals conceded in the last 5 seasons was 85 and that was by the Fulham side of 2013/14. The team that concedes the most goals in the Premier League is highly likely to be relegated.
Even for a 5,000 to 1 title winner Claudio Ranieri has a massive task to keep Fulham up and he knows he will have to fix the leaky defence to have any chance. After spending £100m in the summer on players it will be interesting to see if he gets any cash in January to assist him.
