Telegraph Fantasy Football – potential bargains part 1

Telegraph fantasy football

Here’s the replication of my article for sky sports for the telegraph fantasy football format. I’m going to repeat parts of that article in order to set the scene for Telegraph Fantasy Football managers who didn’t read the sky Sports article. As I said with quality over all the premier league this season and the likes of Rooney and Aguero looking near must haves in our Telegraph Fantasy Football team, finding value elsewhere is going to be essential. Here’s the first of a series of articles identifying value in a player (ie a potential bargain) after looking through all teams in the Telegraph Fantasy Football format.

I’m doing them in the best fixture order in my article “fantasy premier league – analysing the opening 6 rounds of fixtures”. See at bottom of page. For those who need a reminder of the rules see my article “Telegraph Fantasy Football Summary and key points”. Again the link is at the bottom of the page

Again sorry to repeat myself but:

Generally players will be value for the following reasons:

(1) Injuries to another player or a transfer of another player from the club has given them unexpected game time

(2) Sky Sports Fantasy Football believes they may not be first choice for their position

(3) They have transferred in from a lower ranked team.

With no reserves and limited transfers in the Telegraph Fantasy Football format its vital that value is weighed up against the risk of the player not playing. Therefore, value players in your team should be thought about carefully and I wouldn’t start with 8 but a well chosen sprinkle may be necessary.

Rest assured we at fantasy football geek will be keeping an eye out in pre-season for their prospects. By the way for this article I will ignore out of position players as I will be doing a separate piece on these players. Out of position is a player who plays, say, as a forward but is classified as a midfielder in the Telegraph Fantasy Football game.

Here goes then. Remember it goes from best opening 6 fixtures to the worst.

Swansea

Jonthan De Guzman – Midfielder (£3.0m)

In the Telegraph Fantasy Football Format as for the Sky Sports format compared to Sinclair at 3.9m and Dyer at 3.8 he looks a bargain. He’s an attacking midfielder who was involved in set pieces at Mallorca and has strong links to the manager. Should play. A warning here though as Swansea are linked with Rayo Vallecano target attacking midfielder Michu. Should he join we may have to reassess De Guzmans playing prospects

West Ham

Kevin Nolan – Midfielder (£3.3m)

Again as for the Sky Sports format For someone who in his last 2 premier league seasons scored 29 goals and 6 assists in 74 games £4.7m seems a real bargain in Telegraph Fantasy Football. Should play

Aston Villa

Again too much rotation risk with the tinkerman himself Paul Lambert in charge for any value players to be feasible in Telegraph Fantasy Football.

Tottenham

Rafael Van der Vaart – Midfielder(£4.4m)

Compared to Bale at £5.5m this seems a bargain. Lets remember that This is a player who returned 11 goals and 7 assists in 28 starts last season following on from 13 goals and 8 assists in 28 games the season before. Total quality, plus the manager has been talking him up alot recently. With Modric destined to leave this also will surely make more places available in midfield as well. Euro 2012 time and injury record are only doubts. In comparison Ya Ya Toure is £4.3 Cabaye is 4.2 and Guitierrez is 4.0. A bargain.

Emmanuel Adebayor – Forward (5.6m)

I’m still looking at VDV as my value player for Spurs but this is a reasonable price. AVB has talked Adebayor up in recent weeks and he’s only £0.2m dearer than Defoe who has no chance in playing. I’m not his greatest fan so I have to admit to feeling kind of bogus pointing him out. Shoots a reasonable amount but his on target percentage is not that great. Was the striker with the most assists last year with 11, although in my mind over performed in this lottery of a stat. Scored 17 goals. He’s no Aguero, Rooney or RVP but he seems good value to me. He’s certainly not worse than 17 other strikers which is what his price is trying to say.

Chelsea

No one stands out here as a bargain

Sunderland

No one stands out here again

Everton

Jelavic  Striker – (£5.8m)

I’m bias as I’m a big fan. Are there 12 better strikers in the league than him. I don’t think so. A reasonably good shot ratio and a good on target % as a high proportion of shots are taken in the box. 9 goals in 13 games says it all.

WBA

No value here

Newcastle

No stand outs here

The second half of this will hopefully be delivered tomorrow. The output, 5 players from 10 teams is a little disappointing. Perhaps its the low salary cap that makes the differentials seems small

That’s it for the first part of the article. Tomorrow should see the 2nd part in the series of value players for Telegraph Fantasy football
