Telegraph Fantasy Football potential bargains – part 2

Telegraph fantasy football

So heres the 2nd part on the Telegraph fantasy football potential bargains.  Ive put the link at the bottom of the site to the first part (paste it in to your browswer if it doesnt work as a link)

Ive repeated the context below of this article for people who havent read the 2 articles in order.  Remember these tips can change in their importance as transfers happen. Don’t worry though in the week before the opening game I will review all teams, including potential bargains,  so this can be updated

Heres the conteaxt again then:

With quality over all the premier league this season and the likes of Rooney and  Aguero looking near must haves in our Telegraph Fantasy Football team, finding value elsewhere is going to be essential.  Here’s the first of a series of articles  identifying  value in a player (ie a potential bargain)  after looking through all  teams in the Telegraph Fantasy Football format.

I’m doing them in the best fixture order in my article  “fantasy premier league – analysing the opening 6 rounds of fixtures”.  See at bottom of page.  For those who need a reminder of the rules see my article “Telegraph Fantasy Football Summary and key points”.  Again the link is at the bottom of the page

Generally players will be value for the following reasons:

(1)  Injuries to another player or a transfer of another player from the club has given them unexpected game time

(2)  Telegraph Fantasy Football believes they may not be first choice for their position

(3)  They have transferred in from a lower ranked team.

With no reserves and limited transfers in the Telegraph Fantasy Football format its vital that value is weighed up against the risk of the player not playing.  Therefore,  value players in your team should be thought about carefully and I wouldn’t start with 8 but a well chosen sprinkle may be necessary.

Rest assured we at fantasy football geek  will be keeping an eye out in pre-season for their prospects.  By the way for this article I will ignore out of position players as I will be doing a separate piece on these players.  Out of position is a player who plays, say, as a forward but is classified as a midfielder in the Telegraph Fantasy Football game.

Here goes then. Remember it goes from best opening 6 fixtures to the worst. Part 2 here will concentrate on the 10 teams with the worst opening 6 games

Fulham

Clint Dempsey – Midfielder (£4.3m)

I’m sorry am I missing something here?  How can someone who scored 17 goals from midfield with 6 assists added on and was last years top scoring midfield player have 9 people more expensive than him?  It makes no sense?  Not a great fixture start but he just cant be ignored at this price.  There’s obviously rumours about a move to Liverpool which will move him from being a big fish in a small pond to the reverse.  Liverpool are also 19th in my rank of opening 6 fixtures with an horrendous opening 6 fixtures which doesn’t help. Any transfers mean risk but how can you ignore a guy of his quality at this price.

Wigan

No one stands out as value here.

Norwich

Again no one stands out here

Manchester City

Unfortunately no one here.  Zabaleta starts out as being good value except will come under pressure for his place when Richards returns.  Everyone else is fairly valued.

Reading

J Kebe – Midfield (£2.9m)

Reading are going to be a risk this year not only due to the inherent risk of a new team coming up but also the influx of players already arrived plus there will be undoubtedly be more to come. What this does mean though is you have a player valued at a level which assumes an existing team which is then improved significantly. Pogrebneyak for example should improve their scoring record  and I still believe another striker is on the cards.   so think about kebe within that context.  Kebe is probably  your second choice as a midfielder behind Jobi McAnuff however he’s £0.5m cheaper than him who is priced at £3.4m.  Kebe’s stats weren’t far off McAnuffs last season.  Kebe returned 3 goals and 10 assists from 29 starts plus 3 as sub.  McAnuff  scored 5 goals and 11 assists from 39 starts.  Kebe is lightning quick and will suit a counter attacking strategy which will probably evolve as Reading play tougher opposition

Pogrebnyak – Striker (£5.0m)

One of the cheaper players in the Telegraph fantasy football format who’s guaranteed to play and for that reason alone I’m putting him in the bargain bucket.  Myself I’m not a fan, I thought his 6 goals in 12 games, although impressive, were an overperformance of his underlying stats and I wouldn’t put him in my team.  However if you need a filler for your third striker then he’s good value.

QPR

Fabio – Defender (£3.0m)

QPR like all the teams in part 2 don’t have a great start to the season but the signings of Green in goal and Nelsen at the back will hopefully give some experience and a better clean sheet record to the team.  I’m going for Fabio though at £3.0m vs Nelsen at £2.9m as I think he wont be rested which is a possibility for Nelsen due to his age.  Traore seems to have lost Hughes faith so I’m picking Fabio to start and also provide some attacking returns in the form of assists.

Adel Taarbt – Midfield (£3.5m)

Let an army of followers down with a appalling shooting and temper tantrums last year and his price reflects that.  Its just that he seemed to be getting a grip on the premier league towards the end of the season with 2 goals and 6 assists in his last 3 games and if its that form we see rather than the early season form then he could be a real bargain

D Cisse – striker (£5.2m)

In between getting sent off he scored 6 goals in 7 games with very good underlying stats.  There are not many strikers who are guaranteed to play at this price.

Arsenal

There maybe value here in the short term if the injuries continue but nothing that would tempt me.

Stoke

Robert Huth – Defender (£3.3m)

Not a bargain in the sense of a comparison between team mates.  Shawcross is £3.5m,  Wilkinson and Wilson, who could both start, are cheaper at £3.0m and £3.2 respectively.  However (and I know it goes against my “fantasy premier league 23 rules of play” article, link below) but Huth really does have attacking pedigree and is totally worth the premium.  This year in output he was disappointing, 3 goals in 31 games but his underlying shot stats were only behind Risse, Agger and Vermaelen in players who had a reasonable amount of playing time.  The season before he scored 6 goals with 2 assists in 35 games which shows what he can do.

Liverpool

Aquilani and J Cole – Midfield (£2.8m and £2.9m)

With Liverpools terrible fixtures to start there’s no need to put these 2 in your line up unless theres a clear steer they will start but keep an eye on them as they are both at ridiculously low levels for a Brendan Rodgers coached Liverpool team.  We’ll be keeping an eye on the friendly list to see how they shape up for possible selection.  The reason I’m putting them on the bargain monitor list is that they both have the potential to contribute to Brendan Rodgers possession football more so than say Downing.

Fabio Borini – Striker  (£5.3m)

With Andy Carrol certain to depart this is a real bargain possibility for a Liverppol striker.  See my article on him below for an in depth analysis on him.  Suarez as a comparison is £6.6m. A real bargain.

Southampton

No need to predict with these opening fixtures.  We can see how they line up and perform
That’s the telegraph fantasy football bargains then.  hope you got something useful.  Keep an eye out for “The likely lads” article which will come up identifying players who showed patches or short spurts of form which could put them in to our reckoning
