The Lowdown on Nabil Fekir

Real Betis have recently signed one of France’s most exciting attacking midfielders, Nabil Fekir. Nabil has been one of the most coveted young attacking players in European football for a number of seasons, and by making this signing, Real Betis have signalled their intent to make a big push towards European qualification this season. Here is the lowdown on what Nabil Fekir has to offer.

Starting Out with Lyon

Nabil Fekir signed as a youth player to Olympique Lyonnais when he was just 12 years old, but was soon released for not being physically strong enough.

This filled Nabil with determination to prove to Lyon they had made a mistake and he began to train and develop with the French club AS Saint-Ettiene. His development was noticed by a number of French clubs, and there was a lot of interest in signing the young player as a professional from across the French League, but Nabil had his sights set on Lyon.

As a testament to his skill and determination, Lyon re-signed him as a professional player in 2013, proving to him and the club that they had made a mistake when they released him as a 12-year-old just five years earlier.

Becoming a Professional with Olympique Lyonnais

Nabil Fekir’s dream came true when Lyon signed him on professional terms in 2013.

His career got off to a great start, with a number of first team outings in his first season and some goals and assists that got the attention of the French national team, leading to his debut for the national squad in 2015.

After his entrance on the national team stage, clubs across Europe began to notice the attacking midfielder, with some expressing their interest with big money bids in the transfer windows. Perhaps the biggest of these came in the 2018 summer window, with Liverpool tabling a bid worth €60 million for his services.

His performance for Lyon in the following season, 2018/19, faltered a little, and many felt that he needed to make a move in order to advance his career. The big bids from the big clubs didn’t materialise this summer, but Real Betis swooped in with a bid of €19.5 million, rising by another €10 million with add-ons.

Making the Switch to Real Betis

The signing of Nabil Fekir is a big coup for the La Liga club. Many clubs where interested in securing his services for the coming season, but they couldn’t find the space in their squads for the attacking midfield playmaker.

Nabil is now at a club that shares his ambitions, and again he has a point to prove. He has shown before when he was only a young boy that he has the ability and skill to prove his doubters wrong, and he will be ready to do it once again and show Europe that he is a big game player worthy of a big money transfer to one of the continent’s super clubs.
