Introduction
Here we are again with your Morfeo! As promised, I’ve managed to bring you a new post; this second version is very similar to what my final team should look like but different than my first draft article. I want to structure this article in two parts:
– analysis of the information I’ve come across;
– commentary on my team selections;
CHIPS ANALYSIS:
Let’s start by saying that there are essentially four schools of thought on the use of chips:
1a) 12th Man GW1 (Haaland), Max Cap GW2; WC GW3;
1b) Max Cap GW1; 12th Man GW2 (Brazil or France player), WC GW3;
2a) 12th Man GW1 (Haaland), WC GW3, Max Cap quarter-final/semi-final round;
2b) 12th Man GW2 (Brazil or France player), WC GW3; Max Cap quarter-final/semi-final round;
ll of this is based on a few (entirely valid) considerations, namely that
1a) Playing the 12th Man on Haaland is a great idea because they’re playing against a poor side, and besides, you don’t want to have Haaland in your team anymore as the fixtures stiffen;
1b) Playing the Max Captain in GW1 is useful, because with Germany and Spain playing against really weak teams, there’s a chance that a player you own might even score a hat-trick, and perhaps you’ve captained the other one that day (e.g. Oyarzabal – Yamal).
Plus, the 12th Man in GW2 lets you add an expensive player from Brazil, France, etc., whom you couldn’t afford on your budget and with just the two transfers you have;
2a) Precisely because in GW1 the top teams play against weaker sides, by changing your captain from day to day you have a better chance of still securing a high score (perhaps not the highest), but one that doesn’t cost you too many points.
Whereas in the later stages of the World Cup, you might have more players from the same team (Mbappé, Olise, Ronaldo, Bruno, etc.) but you only have a few matchdays left and if you pick the wrong player who might score two goals;
2b) The same applies as in the second part of point 1b + the same applies as in the second part of point 2a;
3) The only certainty is the WC in GW3, where you can swap out players who have secured qualification and seem like they will be rested
4) The Qualification Booster should be played in the first knockout round, where premium teams can still field weaker squads (perhaps against some of the top third-placed qualifiers) and be sure of progressing to the next round.
5) The Mystery Booster (which appears to result in the loss of the CS only after conceding 2 goals) is very useful in the immediately following knockout round, namely the second knockout round, where premium teams may continue to win and progress but, when facing stronger sides, may concede a goal.
TEAM COMMENT:
Captains Scenario
A good strategy would be to pick a captain for each matchday, as mentioned,
at the moment, I have:
06/11 I don’t have anyone here (many people have at least one Mexican defender) as South Africa isn’t particularly strong;
06/12 I don’t have anyone here either;
06/13 I have Xhaka, who could also takes penalties and is currently owned by only 4.7%;
06/14 I have Kimmich, Wirtz, Havertz;
06/15 I have Cucurella, Yamal, Oyarzabal;
06/16 Mbappé;
06/17 Haaland and Bruno;
06/18 James;
I think that in the end, the captain I’ll go with will be the one I choose between the 14th and 15th (Germany and Spain).
Ownerships
Starting this year, there’s this excellent Scouting Bonus: “2 extra points for players with under 5% ownership if your player scores 4+ points”, and in my opinion, the best way to claim it easily is to get a CS from a defender. The players I currently own who meet this under-5% rule are:
Xhaka 4.7%
Vargas 3.6%
G. Inacio 1.5%
Mojica 4.7%
James Rodriguez 4.6%
Selections
You’ll notice I’ve got France’s goalkeeper and Mbappé (who, unfortunately, can’t be ignored despite his first match, as he’s owned by 50% of managers – something you could try with Kane, though, as he’s had a slightly worse game and is currently owned by only 30%). This is because the two transfers I’ll be making in GW2 will be for two Brazilian players:
Nuno Mendes and Xhaka out, Danilo and Raphinha in
This helps me to already have a French defensive asset that I don’t then have to bring in for GW2. This would still give me an attacking and a defensive asset from Portugal, France and Brazil in GW2.
Whilst it is true that there could be a Spanish defender with 5%, it is also true that Cucurella could still provide bonuses thanks to his attacking contributions; I prefer Wirtz, not only because he costs 0.5 less than Musiala, but also because he has the ability to take set-pieces.
Furthermore, I currently own 7 penalty takers.
Doubts
I still have a few doubts to sort out; they concern the uncertainty surrounding Yamal and his injury, which might lead me to pick a replacement, and G. Inacio – though in his case, I’m more certain he’ll start than that he won’t.
