Round of 16 Review

57 points, OR 29k

A very poor round unfortunately. The round started badly as Riad was surprisingly ruled out of Morocco’s fixture and Saibari taken off injured after around 20 minutes. This was compounded by Hakimi adding an assist to his clean sheet – the one high owned Morocco player I don’t own. Things continued to get worse through the round as I paid the price for being very light on England assets, while Oyarzabal of Spain blanked after missing a couple of good chances. Thankfully Messi salvaged the week a little at the end after I ended up with the Captaincy on him, more by default than anything else.

The one bit of good news, is that I only have 2 players knocked out after the Round of 16. The bad news is that Saibari is confirmed as out injured for the ¼ finals and I have doubts over Riad and Manzambi. Fires to be fought then with only 4 free transfers for the ¼ finals.

Here’s the points

Quarter-Finals Team

My hand is somewhat forced therefore with my 4 transfers. I need to sell Vini Jr and Freese as they have already been knocked out and Saibari will also need to be sold with is injury. I then have a decision to make on the last transfer which thankfully I can leave until late as we will know the Morocco team before the deadline so I’ll have some clarity on the Riad situation.

The bookies odds for the teams to reach the semi-finals are the following as of Thursday morning:

France 1/4; Spain 2/7; Argentina 1/3; England 4/9; Norway 15/8; Switzerland 5/2; Belgium 5/2; Morocco 3/1

The 4 highest ranked teams are unsurprisingly the favourites to reach the semi-finals. The question therefore is whether I back these 4 teams or spread the risk somewhat. We get 5 free transfers for the semi-finals and at that stage the 4 teams left in will play the 2 games in each of the final 2 rounds. Therefore, you only need to get 6 players through to guarantee 11 players for the semi-final round; 10 players through and you have a full squad of 15 to select from. I already have 4 France, 2 Spain, 3 Argentina and 1 England player so I have 10 from the 4 favourites. My plan therefore is to bolster my quota from each of these a little more.

The first 2 moves I’ll make look fairly obvious on paper and they will be Vini Jr to Bellingham and Freese to Unai Simon. The Bellingham move covers a popular player who was in great from in the last round and the Simon move increases my coverage of the best defence in the tournament so far. The other 2 move are more tricky as there are not obvious standout players in the midfield category to replace Saibari.

The best option I think probably lies in who isn’t in my team elsewhere in that I don’t own Harry Kane and that bringing him in would have to for Oyarzabal. This is a move I could do in theory, but in burns a transfer and merely swaps 2 players with fairly equal goalscoring odds for this round. A good option therefore could therefore be to bring in a second England midfielder (Saka or Gordon) which at least provides a bit more cover for the England attack.

As for the 4th transfer, then this depends on Riad’s fitness somewhat. If he is fit, then I’ll leave him in and probably do something elsewhere – this could open up an option of getting Kane for example – if I go for Gordon I’d have enough in the bank. If he’s not then I’ll probably need to think of something else!

I’m going to mull things a bit this afternoon and I’ll make my final decisions when the team news lands at around 745pm tonight. I’ll post in the World Cup Slack Channel with my final moves, with Mbappe being my first Captain this round. Good luck folks!

Transfer summary to be confirmed:

Likely: Vinny Jr and Freese OUT to Bellingham and Simon IN

Considering: Saibari OUT to Gordon or Saka IN

To be confirmed: Riad
