Round 1 Review – 108 points; OR – 22k
A solid start then with 9 returns. 3 clean sheets (2 with Scouting Bonus) and 2 assists from my defenders. 2 goals and 2 assists in the midfield and 4 goals and an assist from my strikers. The disappointments were Oyarzabal and Bruno Fernandes. Spain in particular really laboured in attack against a very well organised low block from Cape Verde. Indeed, the debutants could even have busted the Spanish clean sheet at the end with a great chance from a set piece.
As I suspected with the sheer number of teams in this tournament, it was impossible to cover every asset and high ownership assets Kane and Messi produced the goods to make a very high Round 1 rank difficult, but I’m happy with the start especially with all my Boosters still in hand.
Round 2 Plan
There’s a couple of ways that this round could be approached but I’m sticking with my Plan A to use my Wildcard in Round 3 where there is the risk of teams rotating their squads. I can however see an argument for a Wildcard this Round 2, particularly if you’ve had a few misfiring assets in Round 1. There’s enough teams with good Round 2/Round 3 fixture combinations to make this viable. I’m happy enough with my squad though, so I’ll stick with just my 2 free transfers but I will be using one of my Boosters this week – 12th Man.
For my 2 free transfers, my plan this week had always been to lose one of Germany midfielders with them facing a more difficult Round 2 fixture versus Ivory Coast. Coming in will be some Brazilian cover in the form of Raphinha. For the second move, I’ve a couple of choices. I did think about moving to a French defender to cover the higher ownership for Round 2. However, my initial plan had been to move Haaland to Kane or Messi to take advantage of better fixtures for the latter 2 compared to a trickier Round 2 for the big Norwegian.
Looking at the fixtures, Norway vs Senegal is an interesting match-up and could go one of 2 ways. With Senegal losing their opening game versus France, they could come into this game playing a bit more openly and push for a win. However, I still feel they’re more likely to keep this game tight as a draw would be fine for them with their easiest fixture versus Iraq in the final match. I suspect therefore that Haaland won’t get the same opportunities that he did versus Iraq.
So it looks like Kane or Messi for Haaland then. Both had very good opening games, though both did have their share of good fortune too. Messi was perhaps lucky to have got away with one regarding the incident where he raked the back of the defenders calf muscle and the Algerian keeper should have done better on his first 2 goals. Kane was brilliant but was a bit lucky to get away with retaking his penalty. Looking at their next fixtures, they’re both reasonable games on paper even if they’re not against true minnows. Argentina face Austria who are no mugs, but didn’t look the most fluent versus Jordan. England face Ghana who weren’t really tested defensively but laboured going forward against Panama.
There’s also a £0.5m difference in price between the two so this will influence which German asset I sell for Raphinha. If I go Kane, I’ll have to sell Musiala, whereas with Messi I’ve got enough in the bank to sell either of my German midfielders. I’m going to mull this over through today and I’ll make a final decision on this a bit later on.
For my 12th Man Chip, this is a more straightforward decision and I’ll be playing this on Olise. I guess there is a chance that France might manage their minutes in this middle game, but they will still be pushing hard for a win so at the very worse it may an earlier sub. I think it’s worth the risk though – the French were one of the most fluent teams going forward this week and Iraq coughed up a lot of chances so I feel there’s goals here.
