World Cup Fantasy Round 3 tips – Rob Reid’s Team – 27k Overall Rank – Wildcard activated
Round 2 Review
– Rd 2 106 points. Total Points 214, Overall Rank 27k
A pretty steady Round 2. 6 returns 4 blanks, 1 no-show and 9 points from Olise at 12th man. A good Captain haul from Oyarzabal – shame he got hooked at half-time and couldn’t go for the hat-trick in the second-half. Returns too from high ownership Mbappe and Cucurella. Scouting Bonus and returns too from Vasquez, Crepeau and Xhaka.
The negatives haven’t been so much my blanking players, though Raphinha was frustrating, missing 2 good chances and then getting injured. It’s more that the big players are all firing and of course you can’t own everyone, so hauls from Messi and Haaland in particular knocked my rank back a bit from the 5.7k I was sitting on before Monday. Kane and Luis Diaz didn’t make it up as both blanked
Round 3 – Wildcard
The Round 3 Wildcard is going to be a bit of an odd one then. I still think it’s a good week to play it, with a bit of uncertainty over rotation for some teams. If you’ve still got your Wildcard though and are happy with your team this week, I reckon the next best window to play it in would be between the Round of 16 and the ¼ Finals. For the rest of my Boosters, I plan on using the Qualification Booster and the Mystery Booster (speculated to be a defensive chip the increases the Clean Sheet threshold to 1 goal conceded) in the Round of 32 and Round of 16 and then use the Maximum Captain in the Final.
For the Round 3 Wildcard, I’m trying to marry up a balance of picking players with good fixtures and choosing players with something to play for. On that latter point, I would probably include players who are going for The Golden Boot in the category.
Mbappe and Haaland both have a competitive fixture in Round 3 as their respective nations try to win their group, but Messi’s fixture is a dead rubber from Argentina’s perspective for example. However for me, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be completely rested though I reckon we might see their minutes curtailed to around 60-65 to keep them fresher for the later rounds.
I think Scouting Bonus could be key in Round 3 too, especially in defence. I can see there being some fixtures in the games towards the end of the round where teams sit in and they end up as a low-scoring affair or even a 0-0 so they both qualify. Indeed as a Scotland fan, who I suspect will be nervously watching these I fear this may work against us as we go for one of these best third place spots.
In terms of fixtures to target, I like the look of these. I’ve highlighted the nation I like and also separated them by day/kick-off time as remember there will be slightly less potential for changing Captains in this round due the Group games taking place concurrently for each group:
Teams to Target
Scotland vs Brazil – Brazil attack at least and possibly defence; though might be better options with Scouting Bonus elsewhere
Morocco vs Haiti – Morocco defence and attack
Czechia vs Mexico – Mexico defence, though rotation may be an issue
Curacao vs Ivory Coast – attack and defence for Ivory Coast
Tunisia vs Netherlands – attack and defence for Netherlands
Senegal vs Iraq – defence for Senegal, attack is difficult as no obvious standouts but could be a punt there
New Zealand vs Belgium – Belgium haven’t looked that great in attack, but defence could be useful
Egypt vs Iran – some good budget players in Egypt defence in a game that could end up with both teams playing for a 0-0
Panama vs England – rotation may be an issue but Kane will be looking at Golden Boot goals
Dr Congo vs Uzbekistan – defence for DR Congo
Jordan vs Argentina – Argentina possibly rotate but Messi will be looking for goals.
Draft team
With this in mind, here’s where I’m at with my draft:
Goalkeepers – I’ve gone cheap here as I needed the funds and both are potentially eligible for Scouting Bonus – Vasilj of Bosnia & Herzegovina and Shobier from Egypt.
Defenders – Dumfries is my one premium defender concession, he gets forward a lot and I fancy Netherlands for some goals against Tunisia. Then it’s 4 cheap players who are eligible for Scouting Bonus. Douglas Santos has an excellent clean sheet chance versus Scotland as does Riad from Morocco in the same group. They’re joined by Doue (should play as Singo is injured) and it’s another cheap Egyptian defender to complete the set in Hany.
Midfielders – Ok this is where I’ve started to spend. I’ve got 3 premiums in Vini Jr, Salah and Yamal. All have fixtures with something to play for so hopefully they do well. They’re joined by Saibari (who’s been in great form and effectively plays as a forward) and a punt on Nakamura of Japan who also has something to play for in the fixture versus Sweden.
Forwards – I was a bit undecided here on my 3rd option. Mbappe was always going to stay in – something to play for a fixture vs a Norwegian defence that I wouldn’t consider the most solid. Next up Gakpo for a great fixture versus Tunisia. I’m not sure about this 3rd spot and my thoughts were Kane, Messi and Oyarzabal. I’ve stuck with Kane for the moment but this may change.
I plan to confirm everything hopefully later tomorrow afternoon so I’ll post any changes direct into the World Cup Slack Channel link below with a final screenshot.
