A really good first knockout round. 10 returns and only 1 player knocked out; I was a Cape Verde equaliser away from a rare full house. A good ranking boost then, despite not owning the highly owned Harry Kane for his brace. No time for resting up then as the Round of 16 commences this evening!
Here’s the points

R16 Thoughts and Team
Ok housekeeping first as usual. We have 4 free transfers for this round and can now have up to 4 players from each nation. We’re also not allowed to roll transfers in the knockout rounds, which is potentially a problem for the ¼ finals as we only have 4 free transfers for this stage too. Therefore if we want a full squad of 15 players to choose from in the ¼ finals we can only afford to have 4 players knocked out in this round.
I have only had 1 player knocked out – Musiala of Germany. He’s at a fairly high price point too so I’ve got a few options in terms of who to replace him with. The difficulty with this next round is that the games are becoming much tougher to call. Of the fixtures already confirmed, I’d say only France and Argentina (should they beat Cape Verde) are heavy favourites. The bookies have the following odds for teams to reach the ¼ finals (odds taken on Friday afternoon before the final set of R32 games): France 1/25, Argentina 1/7, Morocco 3/10, Brazil 4/11, Spain 2/5, England 8/11.
Next there’s the Booster question for this Round – when do I use the Clean Sheet Shield Booster. Is this best in the R16 or in a later round (remember I’m saving my Maximum Captain Booster for either the Semi-finals or Final.) I don’t think there’s an easy answer on this one and ultimately I’m looking for teams that are probably in tighter games now so I can use this as the Shield it is intended to be.
So who to transfer out and who to bring in then. Musiala has to go with already being out and I’m also inclined to move players who I think have a reasonable chance of being knocked out in this round. Laryea of Canada is therefore high on this list with a tricky fixture versus Morocco and my 2 USA players and Swiss midfielder I’d say are the other higher risk players in this regard. Finally, I have an injury doubt over Medina who came off near the end of normal time with a possible muscle injury.
In terms of who to bring in, focusing initially on Argentina and France assets looks a sensible play at this stage. After this I’m more inclined to spread the risk a bit so I’m looking at Morocco with their good odds to progress and maybe Colombia or Belgium to spread the risk vs the USA. Let’s say France and Argentina both win then that gets me a good core of players into the ¼ finals (provided they stay fit or don’t get suspended). I can then spread the risk across the other fixtures with the aim to try and get 11 players through so I can hopefully use my 4 free transfers for the ¼ finals to fill my squad again.
With all that in mind, here’s my team.
The 4 transfers are:
Laryea to Upamecano
Medina to Molina
Dest to Riad
Musiala to Saibari
Clean Shield Shield Booster Activated
I was £0.2m short of being able to get Hakimi with Saibari so he’s the big miss at the back in terms of EO, with Kane the big EO threat up front. This team however does have £1.9m in the bank which I think could be important for replacing players who get could get knocked out. I’ve also activated the Clean Sheet Shield Booster. Good luck everyone!
