Round 3 Review

87 points Rd 3, 301 pts Total, OR 30k

A quick review of Round 3 first folks – bit of a underwhelming one on the 1 Round Wildcard. The round started well (from a fantasy perspective anyway) with the Vini Jr Captaincy, a Scouting Bonus clean sheet from Douglas Santos and returns from my 2 Moroccan players. After that it went a bit downhill with my Ivory Coast defender missing out on a clean sheet by not scouting and only modest returns from high ownership Kane, Mbappe and Dumfries. My Egypt keeper did save a penalty near the end of the Round though to keep my score from being too bad.

Here’s the points

Round of 32 Thoughts – Qualification Booster Active

Lots to think about as we go into the knockouts so I’ll start with a bit of housekeeping. We’ve been allocated an extra Booster – this is the Defensive Shield. We’ve also had our budget extended by £5m so we now have a total of £105m to play with. Finally, we have unlimited transfers before the Round of 32 matches, but after this it’s 4 free transfers between the Round of 32 and the Round of 16. We then have a tricky negotiation from the Round of 16 to the ¼ finals with just another 4 free transfers.

First up, we need to take a bit of a look at the games and the bracket. There’s a balance now between picking the best players and also picking players that you think are going to progress. There are some big assets projected to meet in the Round of 16 (we could get Germany vs France, Brazil vs Norway and Spain vs Portugal for example so we need to be a little mindful of this when selecting our lineups.

We also need to think about where these remaining Boosters are going to be used. The consensus seems to be that the Qualification Booster is most useful in the Round of 32 (a potential 22 extra points available with this Booster) while the Defensive Shield is probably best in either the Round of 16 or the ¼ finals. I’m still planning on saving my Maximum Captain Chip until the final round.

Looking at the bracket and bookies odds, these are the teams with the best odds to progress to the Round of 16:

Argentina 1/9; Spain 2/9; France 1/4; England 1/4; Germany 3/10; USA 1/3; Canada 8/13; Colombia 4/7; Brazil 4/6; Switzerland 17/20.

Looking at odds further, these are the teams with the best odds to progress to the ¼ finals:

Argentina 2/9; France 8/15; England 8/15; Spain 4/6

It makes sense to use this information when putting the squad together I think. As such, I’m looking for a line-up that has 3x Argentina and 3x France as a core and then good coverage of the other favoured countries. My current draft looks like this:

Goalkeepers – Martinez looks a good solid set and forget pick. He should be good to get to at least the 1/4s. For the second keeper it makes sense to try and pick from the other half of the draw to try and avoid a potential keeper transfer being needed for the quarters or semis. I’ve gone with Freese from USA at the moment – he is still eligible for Scouting Bonus too.

Defenders – I’m looking for a combination of chances of progression, guaranteed minutes and a couple of players with Scouting Bonus potential. Cucurella looks a good option again and offers attacking threat too. I’ve gone with Medina from Argentina for a defensive double-up – he’s good value at only 4m for starters but it’s more the lack of appealing Argentinian midfielders that drives this double-up as much as anything. I’ve also doubled up on USA with Dest – no Scouting Bonus here, but lots of attacking threat as he’s effectively a winger.

My last 2 players do have Scouting Bonus though – there’s the cheap Laryea from Canada who I think have a good chance of clean sheet vs South Africa tonight. Finally Davinson Sanchez from Colombia who also offers aerial threat from set pieces – he was very unlucky not to score vs Portugal.

Midfielders – Here’s where I’ve spent a fair chunk of money. Vini Jr stays from my Round 3 team and he’s joined by 2 French midfielders in Olise and Dembele. I really like their fixture vs Sweden, I like the French attacking chances versus a Graham Potter defence! Musiala returns to my team after featuring in an earlier Round – good fixture this, but I’m wary of over-committing on Germany as this is potentially booking ¼ final transfers with them likely to face France.

The highly impressive young Swiss talent Manzambi completes the set for a good fixture versus Algeria, though again I’m wary here as I could be booking another ¼ final transfer with them likely to face Colombia in the Round of 16.

Forwards – Mbappe and Messi are absolute non-negotiables. They should be in everyone’s teams in my opinion. The third striker option is where it gets interesting. At the moment I’ve gone with Oyarzabal, but I’m deliberating this spot carefully and may restructure elsewhere as I can see a string argument for Kane, Embolo and a few others. Tricky call this 3rd spot.

There’s a few other things I’m debating – lack of England coverage for example, though I can see their next 2 fixtures being tight ‘Park the Bus’ type affairs. I’ve also got no Lamine Yamal, no Netherlands, no Belgium and no Haaland so there is some thinking to be done this afternoon! I do still have £2.5m in the bank with this current draft so there is definite potential for bringing in higher priced players.

I plan on confirming my team by 7pm tonight UK time (deadline is 8pm) and as per that last couple of Rounds I’ll post this directly into the World Cup Channel on Slack link👇 .
