Here’s an update on the FFGeek sky sports fantasy football team including the wildcard (sorry I mean overhaul) available now

sky sports fantasy football – a review to date including FFGeek team overhaul

In this article I’ll briefly recap on my sky sports fantasy football team results to date, my playing style and then talk through my overhaul and captain planning

Position to date

Here’s my basic stats:

Points:  219

Overall rank:  21,449

Transfers used:  0

FFGeek league position 55 of 177

So ok with my position to date.  Not having Lukaku in the team was a big problem but in the end  the overall rank could be worse and I resisted the urge to make any transfers which seemed a waste with a post GW3 overhaul coming up

My Basic way of playing

I tend to play the game differently than anyone I’ve seen and I explained it in more detail in this season introduction post which also includes a rule summary.

In very simple terms I like to play 3-4-3 and have 3 premium forwards and 1 premium midfielder from the top 7 clubs to carry the principal captain burden.  I then look to have at least 2 premium attacking defenders hopefully from different clubs than the forwards so they can possibly pick up the captaincy gaps if required.  Budgetary constraints will probably mean 1 cheap Defender and a cheap GK.  The remaining 3 midfield slots will be filled with cheap pass and or tackle bonus players who will hopefully pick up points in a consistent fashion negating the need for transfers to find good fixtures for lower value players.  Again these are, hopefully,  from a different spread of teams so they can fill in for captain duties when required on a Monday, Tuesday or Friday night.

I use transfers very rarely so I can fill all the captain slots and try to only make them when there are injuries or unavoidable captain gaps.  I plan my captains about 5-6 weeks in advance.

The 2 overhauls (wildcards essentially) mean that my saving of transfers for the scattering of fixtures at the end of the season maybe a complete waste of time.  That maybe offset by the many different nights of fixtures for postponements and TV demands but that remains to be seen.  This way of playing has served me reasonably well so far so I’m going to continue with it come hell or high water.  I have to say I don’t know anyone else who plays this way.

The overhaul team

Captains candidates

Firstly I started with my 4 captains.  They were always going to come from the probable top 7 teams.  I wanted them to be 3 strikers and 1 midfielder.  Here were the candidates:

Chelsea – Morata

Liverpool – Salah or Mane

Spurs – Kane

Man Utd – Lukaku

Man City – no one due to uncertainty of positions and rotation mad manager

Everton – no one suitable

Arsenal – Lacazette benching put me off him and Sanchez position and motivation not to mention club too risky

So my 4 captains are Morata, Salah, Kane and Lukaku.  They covered 10/18 gamedays over the next 6 gameweeks.  The top 7 clubs covered 11 games so I then needed to cover another 8 games.

2 Premium defenders

I then turned to my 2 premium defenders.  If I tried to dovetail top 7 defenders to cover captain positions it was a waste of time in the next 6 games weeks as 10/11 top 7 positions were already covered.  So I then looked for attacking value.  They to me seemed to be Blind and Mendy.  Man Utd was an essential defensive cover.  Man City have 2 good full backs and Mendy is a good price.

The I had to fill the pass and tackle bonus players plus a cheap GK and defender.  At the same time I wanted to fill the 8 remaining captain slots so not to use transfers. I want to save transfers and use them later when I have injuries or other fixtures that need transfers to cover captain options.  Id rather have the less than ideal captain options now and save transfers to use later on.

I tried many different ways of covering the 8 gamedays.  The best path ended up as

Elliot GK Newcastle (hopefully no other GK signed)

Suttner Def Brighton

Barry Mid WBA (WBA signed a new CDM so that needs to be monitored

Matic Mid Man Utd

Mooy Mid Huddersfield (not a pass and tackle bonus player but needed him in the captain planning)

You’ll see how they fit together captain wise below but here’s the team with £2m in the bank in case adjustments are needed.
