Matchday 27 Review – 159 points; Gameweek Rank 1,641

Here was my team for GW27

Fantasy Bundesliga Matchday 28

Week 2 of my foray into Official Fantasy Bundesliga Manager (OBFM) was another successful one with a very pleasing gameweek rank of 1641. The MD started well; with Mittelstadt left out of the Hertha starting line-up for the Berlin derby on Friday night, I opted to bring in Marvin Plattenhardt and placed my defensive star on him. It was a bit of a punt, but paid off handsomely as he racked up 29 points, a fine start to the weekend.

Saturday also went well, with my starred midfielder Kai Havertz scoring 33 along with the usual Lewandowski goal and 19 points at the back for Achraf Hakimi. I then gambled up front on Sunday and switched my forward star from Lewandowski to Werner. This also worked out with the Leipzig star returning a hat-trick for 42 points. I did however make a bit of a Horlicks of the last match, choosing not to switch my keepers and missing out on a penalty save from Fortuna Dusseldorf’s Florian Kastenmeier. I also bizarrely finished the Matchday with 10 players, as I removed Jacobs from my team with him on -1 after he’d been subbed, though he did actually finish on zero after Koln’s unexpected late comeback.

So despite missing out on another 10 points, I can’t be too disappointed with my 2nd week in OBFM. It’s a quick turnaround now though to prepare for a tough midweek MD28. Let’s have a look at what’s going on in this.

Matchday 28

Potential transfers

A huge game kicks off this Matchday then; Der Klassiker – Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich. This is effectively the deciding game in the Bundesliga title race. A Bayern win pretty much wraps up the title by putting them 7 points clear with just 6 games to play. A Dortmund win however, throws the title race wide open, putting them back within a point of the reigning champions but possibly also opening the door for Leipzig and even Bayer Leverkusen to get involved in the title race as well.

Recent history certainly favours Bayern in this one – they’ve won 5 of the last 6 meetings between the two sides and triumphed 4-0 in the reverse fixture back in November. Indeed, they’ve scored 24 goals in these last 6 meetings between the two sides so Dortmund really need to tighten up defensively if they have any hope here.

From a fantasy point of view, it certainly complicates this gameweek. It will mean that we’re limited to one match for early team news and that some of our main Star Player options are going to be tied up in a more difficult fixture. In terms of the other games, Bayer Laverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach (BMG) both have favourable fixtures in the late Tuesday games, especially the latter who face Werder Bremen. On Wednesday, the early game of Leipzig vs Hertha Berlin looks a good option for starred players and the pick of the evening games for selecting assets is probably Augsberg’s home fixture against Paderborn.

In terms of moves this week, I’m quite tempted to sell one of my assets from the Dortmund vs Bayern fixture and then bolster my squad elsewhere to cover the rest of the gameweek. High on the list of sales would be either Gnabry from Bayern or Haaland from Borussia. Gnabry has been carrying a knock, though the Bayern website report he is fit while Haaland looked a little out of sorts in the weekend win over Wolfsburg.

In terms of who I’d bring in, if it’s Gnabry going I’d likely do a straight swap to Sabitzer of Leipzig who impressed me against Mainz on Sunday. If it’s Haaland, I’d probably bring in Thuram or Plea from BMG as a replacement. Elsewhere, Framberger (DF 3.7m) looks the most feasible Augsberg option within my budget – I’d probably lose one of my cheap Koln options for him. I’d then also be tempted to swap one of my stars of last week – Marvin Plattenhardt with Hertha facing a tough trip to Leipzig. Bensebaini of BMG at 9.6m is fairly close in price but by all accounts is a rotation risk, so I might be tempted by another Leipzig player in defence. ‘Die Roten Bullen’ have fantastic fixtures until the end of the season, so may well be set and forget players if they maintain the form they showed against Mainz.

Potential star players

As for my star players, I’ll certainly star Lewandowski and Hakimi in the opening game along with Gnabry if I retain him. Havertz is an option in the Tuesday 730pms along with any BMG players I bring in and even Gulde, my Frieburg defender. My Leipzig players then provide back-ups for the 530pm on Wednesday fixture, though pickings are more sparse in the Wednesday 730pm games with Koln and Augsberg assets the final reserves here. This is why I might be tempted to swap Haaland out for a cheap striker in the Wed 730pms who might provide a final back-up if Lewandowski and Werner both somehow score low. I’ll certainly be mulling this evening and into tomorrow morning!

Sorry if that’s a little vague – one thing with OBFM is it’s quite a reactive day and having early team news before the first deadline does tend to mean that I commit to transfers quite late. I’ll Tweet on Tuesday with my final team, but unfortunately it may be after Die Klassiker kicks off. Good luck for this Matchday folks and I hope you’re continuing to enjoy the game.
