Introduction

Firstly if you’re new to the site my last 4 seasons overall ranks are 17k, 36k, 17k and 21k.

GW37

GW37 points: 44 (FPL average 43) Total points 2,410, Overall Rank: 18k, red arrow 2k.  Team Value: £103.3m

I’ve now used all my chips

Here’s the points:

Fantasy Premier League GW38 Tips

So another disappointing week with 44 points and a 2k red arrow to 18k. In terms of gameweek ranks it was my 3rd worst of the season at around 4.2m.

Where I would have been without Rudiger I dread to think although there are also FPL managers saying the same about the late Antonio goal so I’m not alone in being rescued from disaster by 1 event. It was a captain neutral gameweek with none of Salah, Kane and Fernandes did anything and that also prevented potential damage

4 returners is sort of par for the course really although none in double figures didn’t help the situation.

According to Livefpl I was 7 points off breaking even rank wise which is a reasonable distance.

The list of players who hurt me was long and painful. Bamford 12 points, Dallas 5, Antonio 8 and Digne 8. I, at least, avoided hurt from Son, Raphinha and Shaw who managed 2, 3 and 1 points respectively.

My transfer in of Greenwood was a disaster and a problem for this week if there’s mass rotation of United. The Jota injury and my lack of bench blinded me to my original transfer thought of Vydra to Antonio and it was a costly distraction not only last week but potentially this week as well. It was one of those transfers you have buyers regret soon after unfortunately.

Transfer thoughts

1 free transfer and £1.3m in the bank.

Last game of the season so it’s a statement of the obvious that you only need to focus on this gameweek.

My overall team context

Unfortunately I’m now in a position where I have Holgate who has been dropped and Veltman who’s injured plus 2 of Man Utd who have the Europa League final on Wednesday.

Chelsea and Liverpool have to win to secure UCL spots and Leicester as well in the hope 1 will slip up. Leicester winning the FA Cup means if they finish 5th then the 6th place team will qualify for the Europa League which will be between West Ham and Spurs. Everton’s goal difference means they cannot realistically qualify for the Europa and I’m assuming they don’t want to qualify for the Europa League Conference which is more for the non big 5 league Countries I would say.

So given that, of the teams who have something to play for I have Salah and Alexander Arnold of Liverpool, Rudiger of Chelsea, Lingard of West Ham and Kane of Spurs. A massive squad of 5.

I also expect Bielsa to not allow his team to relax one bit in front of their home crowd but I have no Leeds.

Martinez, Holding, Fernandes, Greenwood, Vydra and Calvert Lewin have nothing to play for. Of those I could see everyone except maybe Calvert Lewin and possibly Holding being benched which is a scary prospect.

Fernandes and Greenwood have positively incentive not to play given the Europa League final although with Cavani and Martial unlikely to play in GW38 for differing reasons that will mean the CF spot will either be Rashford’s or Greenwoods as I can’t see it going to a player on the fringes. I would be gobsmacked if Fernandes plays

The thorny problem of my bench

I have Veltman injured, Holgate who’s likely not to start and if he does is playing v Man City and Bissouma who is probably looking to claim 3rd place behind WBA’s Gallagher and Villa’s McGinn in the midfielders yellow card table.

All season I’ve been investing in my bench often to my detriment. That has resulted in double figure point hauls staying on the bench from the likes of Soucek (twice), Targett, Calvert Lewin, Shaw and Ward Prowse yet somehow I’ve carelessly let my bench crumble into dust just when it’s going to be needed.

However generally I’m not a fan of hits so doing it when it only has 1 game to pay back just doesn’t strike a positive chord with me at all. It is what it is unfortunately.

The transfer possibilities

If I had an unlimited pot of transfers I’d like to have Antonio and at least 1 player from Leeds who play WBA.

However this week it’s very hard to look past the fact that £11.4m Bruno Fernandes is a big candidate for the bench with the Europa League final so he seems the natural target to exit.

If I wanted to leave Fernandes in place I could strengthen the bench with Veltman to Dallas or to a West Ham defender against Southampton.

However with Liverpool having come so far and with Palace nothing to play for it’s hard not to just go Fernandes out and Sadio Mane in

I’m not so negative as others on Mane. This season he just can’t seem to put the ball in the net whereas last season he couldn’t miss. His xG and xA are virtually identical in the last 2 seasons except last season he over performed from 14 to 18 whereas this season he’s underperformed from 14 to 9 virtually on the same minutes. There’s nothing to say Palace won’t see a massive correction.

At the moment that’s my likely transfer – Fernandes out and Sadio Mane in. Obviously I’ll do my team selection article closer to the deadline but given OGS has been fairly circumspect about the team I can’t see there being anything coming out to change my mind.

Of course you want to go into the final with loads of energy. We want to get minutes into a few who might need it going into the final, and to enjoy it.”

Lineup issues

The lack of bench means that this is a fairly easy ask. It will be Bissouma, Holgate and Veltman in that order and GK I will stick with Martinez.

Captain Choice

I’ve yet to do a poll but it’s hard to go past Salah for me. Kane has a tricky fixture against Leicester and Fernandes we talked about. I’ll probably do the poll next.

Here’s the team

Assume Fernandes is Sadio Mane
