Here is the latest update of how FFG contributors Alex Ball and Joseph Crilley are doing in the GW19 Championship Manager FPL game. Alex is riding high in an unbelievable 3rd place of the overall rankings as part of a team with VionylRichie while Joseph is currently 1st in the late joiner’s league (for those managers that started in GW5).

What’s coming up this week

ChampManFPL is entering the Christmas period and GW19 includes a massive Boxing Day clash between the two heavy hitters of the league, Man Utd and Arsenal. Sir Alex Ferguson elected to rest many of his star players during his side’s last match which cost them dearly as they dropped points against lowly West Ham. This also cost plenty of FPL managers as Van Nistelrooy, Veron and Beckham were amongst those to miss out, which meant vice-captains and benches had to be called upon. The trip to Highbury looks to be a key contest as both sides seek to reduce the lead opened up at the top by high-flying Middlesbrough who travel to Everton.

Looking further ahead, there is an interesting period coming up for fantasy managers as there is a blank in GW22, which will likely be followed by doubles in the following two gameweeks. Chips will be surely utilised across these weeks and strategies will need to be formulated soon to allow the right transfers to be made. Regardless of strategy, Leeds’ assets look vitally important as they are the only team scheduled to play during the blank and have a double in GW23 & GW24. They also have promising fixtures over the festive period so expect numerous transfers in for their players ahead this gameweek’s trip to Southampton!

Alex Ball & Vionyl Richie – Overall rank 3

Here’s our points from last week:

GW19 Championship Manager FPL

We have had success in previous GWs and haven’t been afraid of taking a hit or two to set our team up for some good blocks of fixtures. GW19 is a tricky GW with a lot of the highly owned players have a tricky match up and there will be more with us who have the majority of their squad playing away, which is a big factor in this game.

We are targeting three Leeds players this GW and we’re set on two of them; Ian Harte and Mark Viduka. The third one is a bit harder and requires some forward thinking, it will either be McPhail or Kewell.

In these moves we are selling Taggart, Phillips and Selakovic or Veron. We need to decide if we’re getting rid of Selakovic for McPhail or Veron for McPhail or Kewell. It will most likely be Selakovic since we had plans to get Silvestre in as our third Manchester United player but he got injured last GW and is out for a month. The first rule of this sim should be to always own three MUN players! They are capable of destroying any team, home or away.

Leeds have a great run coming up, including back to back doubles in GW23 and GW24, which is why we’re looking at the trio at once. Here we chose to attack their good run and will most likely move away from one or two of them by GW26 where a move from Viduka to Rebrov could do us well!

We always like to have a plan in mind and then wait for the game to screw up that plan somehow!

Here’s the lineup assuming we do Selakovic out for McPhail in:

Joseph Crilley – Overall rank 61 Late Joiner’s league 1

As the old saying goes, sometimes it is better to be lucky than good and I certainly had my fair share of fortune during GW18! The Man U rotation in the late game was a massive benefit to me as it enabled Petrescu and McPhail to come off my bench while Boa Morte did the business as my vice-captain. This boosted my score by an additional 34 points to turn the gameweek into an exceptional one and catapulted my team into the top 100.

That ranking will make it tough to continue the rise up the leaderboard, especially as the fixtures for my team are no longer as promising. All of my available outfield players have an away fixture this gameweek, though I do have two free transfers to improve the situation at least. In need of a defender, I will be making the fairly obvious move to bring Ian Harte in the injured Silvestre ahead of the Leeds’ fixture run.

The second transfer required some further thinking and I considered saving it as I am yet to finalise my chip strategy for the upcoming blanks and doubles. Ultimately though, I have decided to go all-in on Leeds by bringing in Viduka for Rebrov and giving him the armband. With Van Nistelrooy facing a tough fixture, I wanted to look elsewhere for my captain and the flag for Rebrov had me concerned so I am pinning my hopes on the big Aussie!

Here are my plans for the next two gameweeks as shown in my Transfer Planner:
