The schedule
The schedule ranks the teams by averaging their Goals against and their expected goals against. It is not adjusted for upcoming fixtures. From the free stats site Fbref
Player values and stats were as of Tuesday 18 January and don’t include the Brighton v Chelsea game
Fixture ease ranks the ease of the fixtures in the next 6 gameweeks
CS odds are the bookies odds for a clean sheet given a £1 bet
Pstpnd is the numbers of postponed games which could end up making a double gameweek for the team
xCS% id the % of games where the expected goals against has been less than 1.0
CSs is the number of clean sheets
Player suggestions for GW23
Generally for transfer suggestions, as I said above, I’ve tried to balance a good entry point, defensive strength of the team and upcoming fixture easiness. You can see the fixtures on the fixture ease schedule below which again include the provisionally rearranged fixtures
I’ve also talked about the 4 teams with potential for 2 fixtures in GW23 although as I write nothing has been confirmed
Manchester City
Definitely the best defensive team and although they have no postponed matches for doubles they can easily beat defensive players from teams with 2 fixtures in the gameweek as Cancelo showed this week with 11 points.
However I also think £5.6m Laporte (PPM 5.1) and £6.3m Dias (PPM 4.8) are good picks
Liverpool
Really this is just to say that you should have Alexander Arnold in your team
Arsenal
Either GK Ramsdale or Tierney are good picks here. If you want to go cheap then £4.5m White (PPM 3.8) is the best pick. 2 blanks but the fixtures around it are so good they’re still worthy of investment as long as you’re happy with your bench although even then a challenge as in GW27 Liverpool and Chelsea also have blanks
The potential DGW23 teams
The games that could be added to GW23 or even GW24 depending on how they view the proximity of dates are
Leeds v Villa, Burnley v Watford, Villa v Burnley.
The double fixtures would look something like this
Leeds – Newcastle H and Villa H
Burnley – Arsenal A and Villa A
OR
Burnley – Arsenal A and Watford H
Watford – Norwich H and Burnley A
The problem with defenders and DGWs are that you can easily end up in the Alonso situation of DGW22 when he ended up with no clean sheet and 2 yellow cards so his total return was 2 points. GKs are probably the exception as you will generally expect to accrue save points no matter what. Most mids and forwards you think you’ll end up with minimum 4 and a higher probability of am attacking return.
I’m not wild on any of the defences above although I think Burnley GK Pope, just through the sheer number of games and save points, should see a decent return.
Otherwise I think Def Digne of Villa definitely has good attacking potential and the defence has shown some improvement since Gerrard became manager.
A decent number of managers will have Foster as their reserve GK so despite the defence yet to have a clean sheet he would still be worth having for save point potential
The Fixture Ease Schedule
Here’s the next 6 fixtures as ranked by the ease of the attacking teams they face
I haven’t included any potential DGWs
GK goals saved over expected goals saved per 90 from Fbref
In essence this shows the form shot stoppers so far this season. It compares the per 90 goals saved vs expected goals saved so is a variation on the save% table I normally give. I think you’ll find it quite interesting.
