Introduction

Hi and welcome to this week’s Player Picks – a selection of players who you might want to consider for your FPL team for this week and beyond. I choose the 3 picks each gameweek in the following format:

Banker – A player who is expected to do well over the next few weeks

Ace – A player who is expected to do well this week and makes a good Captain option

Joker – A differential pick (under 10% ownership)

It was 2 out of 3 returns with last week’s picks with only Joker Lacazette blanking so I’m hoping for more of the same this week. Also apologies I can’t get a YouTube video up this week – I’ve had a bit of dental work done so I thought producing video content maybe wasn’t the greatest idea this week, and hence I’ve reverted back to the old format of text for this week! Here’s my picks:

Banker – Nelson Semedo (Wolves) – 4.9m – BRE, sou, NEW, avl

I really like the prospects of the Wolves defence for the next weeks. They’ve got a great fixture run right up until GW15 and their defence currently ranks 3rd best in the league for xGC and best in the league for xGC from open play. 4.6m Marcal will be a popular shout for Wildcarders this week after 2 assists in GW4, but if you can afford it I’d spend the extra 0.3m and get Semedo who’s attacking stats have been the better of the two over these opening 4 weeks. Compared to Marcal he ranks 0.22 higher for season xA (0.38 vs 0.16) and 0.19 higher for season xG (0.75 vs 0.56) while only Reece James ranks higher for penalty box touches amongst defenders this year who have played more than one game. He may not have had a return as yet, but the stats would suggest that something is coming soon!

Ace – Gabriel Jesus (Man City) – £8.6m – SOU

For me, Man City vs Southampton is the standout Captaincy fixture this week – it’s just a case of whether you can trust Pep Roulette and punt on one of the Citizens assets. Jesus would be my choice for this – he’s already got 2 double digit gameweek scores this season and he was used sparingly in the midweek UCL victory over RB Leipzig netting a late goal in a 9 minute cameo off the bench. This bodes well for him starting at the weekend. Opponents Southampton have steadied things a little after looking so vulnerable against Everton in GW1, but are still looking for their first victory of the season. Visits to the Ethiad often end up as messy experiences for away teams (as Norwich, Arsenal and Leipzig have found out so far this season) and I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see the Saints ship a few on Saturday afternoon.

Joker – Allen Saint Maximin (Newcastle) – £6.5m – LEE

The 7.2% owned French winger may not be the first name on everyone’s Watchlist, but he’s already registered returns in 3 out of 4 games so far this season and has two great attacking fixtures coming up at home to Leeds and away to Watford. The trade-off with this is that he can be a frustrating player to own – fun and infuriating to watch in equal measures, but on his day explosive and often unplayable. A good option for draft leagues, for FPL I think he’s a 2-week punt at best I reckon, but one that could rack you up 20 odd points in these 2 weeks…or equally only rack you up 2. Just make sure you’ve got an exit strategy if you’re buying him. Here’s hoping it’s a fun Friday night in the north-east for him this week!

That’s it for GW5 folks. I’ll hopefully be back on YouTube for GW6 – good luck!
