FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYER RANKINGS GW5 – DEFENDERS AND GKS

If the article is a little stats heavy and long winded then there is a suggested players section at the end

APPROACH & STAT DEFINITIONS

Generally you’ll be looking to put 1 or 2 or even 3 premium defenders in your team and supplement them with 2 or 3 cheap players.

I’ve firstly ordered the teams by what I think is their defensive strength principally from last season with adjustments for transfers completed and fixtures up to GW4. The stats after that are their:

fixture ease ranking so you can see who has the best fixtures over 2 different periods. See our fixture ease article
best cheap secure gametime option and an attacking option so you can compare price. That means you are then able to choose the type of defender you like in your team.
even potentially cheaper player who needs further explanation which is below the schedule
GK price in as a comparison.

The value risk players and others in more detail

Spurs

Davies could be the best FB in the premier league at the moment attacking wise.  However that’s something you could also say about Danny Rose when he’s fit.  I don’t think given Davies form that you can assume Rose will walk straight back into the side and they may split the competitions between the premier league and the rest.  However it is still an unknown.

Aurier started in the UCL last night against Dortmund and this could be the split of competitions for Spurs.  Pochettino will rotate FBs it’s just how

Everton and Liverpool

The prospect of a Liverpool/Everton £4.5m perfect home and away rotation of cheap defenders continually takes a step forward and then 2 back.  Holgate looked set to take the RB spot for Everton and rotate with TAA or Moreno.  However Martina took the RB spot at the weekend clouding that hope.  If Martin plays in the Europa tonight that could open the door for Holgate although it’s less of an issue with Man Utd away next,  meaning it’s 1 game too early for Everton.  As for Liverpool, there was good news with Gomez starting in the UCL meaning TAA was the likely candidate for the weekends excellent home game with Burnley.  However,  Gomez got himself sent off and will be suspended for the next game. Does that cloud the certainty of TAA for GW5.  The next round of the UCL isn’t until the 25/26 September but surely TAA won’t play all 3 games with Gomez only playing in the EFL Cup?  Moreno playing last night means £5.0m Robertson will likely play on the weekend.

It’s such a great potential match up especially with Burnley next for Liverpool but it feels racked with uncertainty

Watford

The Liverpool situation looks like a children’s puzzle compared to Watford.  If you can believe it there are 8 defenders with a value of £4.5m or less.  Of those 8 only Femenia has played all 4 games and he has the shadow of Janmaat who came on and scored in GW4.  Injuries, suspensions and selection changes have meant I could not tell you who is likely to start GW5 and continue in the role.  That’s apart from Holebas who is unhelpfully £5.0m

Palace

The appointment of Roy Hodgson has to create some uncertainty over defensive selection.  De Boer’s possession game necessitated a certain type of defender which maybe at odds with Hodgsons less fussy style.

Suggested players for GW5

Jones – a shaky performance at the weekend by him and club but still a very strong defensive outfit.

Mendy Man City – Great attacking form and good fixtures although does come at a hefty price

Davies Spurs – Maybe the Rose risk has tipped in Davies favour

Maguire Leicester – some good fixtures coming up and has decent goal threat

C Clark Newcastle – reasonable fixtures and defensive form
