Sun Dream Team selection – previous FFGeek league winner Simon Rowley discusses his first draft team

Just over a month until the season starts, so time to start picking your Sun Dream Team! It should be noted though that trying to pick a final 11 at this time of year is like trying to swat flys with a tennis racket, you’ll have a few hits, but most will be way off target.

So, bearing this in mind, my initial Sun Dream Team selection will probably not end up being my final selection, especially with the transfer window open until after the season starts and the likes of Sanchez, Coutinho, Lukaku, Costa and Aguero all rumoured, or confirmed transfer targets for various teams.

Goalkeeper

In goal, in keeping with my usual policy of a cheapie keeper, I’ve gone for new Bournemouth signing Begovic. A top class keeper, good shot stopper with plenty to prove after sitting on Chelsea’s bench. With Ake also joining Bournemouth the defence looks stronger and Begovic becomes a decent looking prospect at £2.5m.

Defence

Defence is not exactly earth shattering, especially if you’ve seen FFG’s team, but I genuinely didn’t just copy and paste his defence! You’ll see from FFG’s first draft team article that it’s similar.  Davies, Matip, Holgate and Soares are all in, but Davies and Holgate obviously need watching as they’re only in due to injuries. Holding at Arsenal looks a decent price as well, if he can nail down a starting spot. Palace and Watford defenders are also worth considering, due to their new managers. Stoke also, now Butland is back and fit (not easy saying that as a Vale supporter!).

Midfield

Midfield and forwards are an absolute nightmare this year to pick, and for every player I chose, I could have picked 2 or 3 others easily. I’ve tried to spread all 6 players over the “top” teams. Ozil gets my Arsenal pick, but Sanchez and Lacazette (when he appears in the player list) are other obvious choices. Coutinho goes in for Liverpool, but Mane at the same price is certainly tempting (if he’s fit). Firmino (although classified as a striker) and Salah are also worth consideration. For Chelsea, I’ve gone for Willian. At £4m he looks a bargain if he recaptures last years form and with doubts over Hazard’s fitness, he looks really good value. Costa and Pedro the other options although Pedro is classified as a striker.

Strikers

Up front, again no surprises, its Kane, Lukaku and Jesus. Kane just keeps getting better and better and is nailed on to play virtually every week. To me is an absolute must. Alli and Eriksen the only other real options, especially with Son breaking his arm. Lukaku looks really good value, especially if his Man Utd transfer goes through. Pogba the only other real option from Utd as everyone else is rotation prone. Rashford could offer good value, if Chelsea highjack the Lukaku deal.

Finally, Jesus; he is just so tempting at his price, and given his form last season. Aguero has always been a must for last few seasons, and I certainly didn’t expect not to have him, but Jesus just sneaks it for me. The City midfield this season looks absolutely ripe for rotation, with KDB, Silva (both of them), Sane, Sterling, Toure and Nolito all looking for starts in the attacking area.

Defoe, Gray, Vardy, Austin, and Benteke are all possibly worth a punt, albeit without European football.  There is one really interesting possibility and that’s Iheanacho.  At £2.5m, if he goes to Leicester or the Hammers, he could be an absolute bargain given his goals to shots ratio.

So here’s the team:

Final thoughts and cash in the bank

As I’ve said, this is very much a first draft effort, and will probably change countless times before the season starts, but at least its a start.

The team leaves me with 1 million in the bank as a contingency. One problem I constantly had last year was having no spare money when it came to transfers. With the price changes, I think that having spare money available will be a big advantage, and is definitely a mistake from last year I’ve learned from.

Don’t forget to join the FFGeek Sun Dream Team League the code is SGDKX9Y3

Good luck to everyone with their team planning.

Thanks Simon and we look forward seeing some of those countless changes!
