Introduction
This is part 2 of the FPL managers who contribute to the FFGeek site with good histories who show their teams each week. This will give people a feel for what other managers are doing. It’s a fairly informal thing with no obligation on anyone and these teams may change at anytime before the deadline without further notice. It won’t cover transfers in real time either. It’s just to give an idea of the trends for the week no more. The teams are shown as their “final-ish” teams so they could change. Where they have twitter accounts I have shown this and they may update them there or on our Slack Channel which is part of our subscription Patreon site but this is not guaranteed

GW26 review
A bit of a ‘meh’ gameweek in terms of scoring and I guess I was possibly hoping for more from the Bench Boost, but in the end I’ll take a decent gameweek rank and healthy green arrow. It was 23 extra from the benched players in the end which I guess is pretty decent. The big disappointment though was my attack – 2 attacking returns from 13 games, though to be fair this seemed to be a bit of a theme for the week overall. My defence and keepers faired better thankfully- 5 returns from the 7 with 12 pointers from Shaw and Martinez the highest scorers in my team after the 16 points from Captain Kane.
Reflecting on things, I’m glad I’ve got this chip out the way now and moving forward I can look at thinning out my bench a bit now if I need to free up funds. The challenge longer term will be keeping pace with those who still have Wildcards and chips still to play. I’m in ok shape for GW29 should get to 9 players using free tranfers) and I might look at a mini-Wildcard in GW31 (2FTs and a -4) to hopefully stay with those who still have chips in hand. Before that though, there’s a double gameweek again this week! Here’s my plans for GW27…
GW27 Team
1FT and £3.0m in the bank.
My eyes now are turned towards GW29 and my 3 free transfers I have available up to that gameweek will be used on players who will play in this blank gameweek. My first move is a fairly easy decision to make. I’ve got Barnes red-flagged so he’s an easy Transfer Out and my £3.0m in the bank will be invested in the Spurs midfield. It’s a straight fight between Son and Bale here and I’ll be playing it safe and going for the South Korean star here. Bale is starting to rekindle some of the form that made him an FPL legend in 2012013, but Son looked sharp this week and Bale still looks like a 70 minute sub to me. So Son comes in – I’ll make the transfer on Friday night though once all the Pressers have been done.
Looking further forward, I’ll definitely spend one of my other free transfers in the run in to GW29 on Antonio – he’ll come in for Calvert-Lewin. As for the other, it’ll probably be Shaw making way with a West Ham defender looking the most likely replacement for him.
For my team this week, I’ve decisions to make in all areas. In defence, I’ll play my City double with them having 2 games and hopefully I might get 3 out of 4 appearances from them. I’ve then got to pick one of Shaw, Konsa and Veltman – I’ll have a look at the bookies on Friday night here, but it’s looking like it will be one of Veltman or Konsa. I’ll then have to bench one out of Raphinha, Bamford and Calvert-Lewin . Again I’ll check bookies odds here on Friday for a decision on this.
Captaincy this week is an odd one. Gundogan with 2 fixtures looks the more obvious choice but how many minutes will he get across the 2 matches? You’ve got to think he’ll play versus United but will he then have his minutes managed versus Southampton? Away from the double gameweek, Kane and Son both look appealing choices with a good fixture at home to Palace. I’ll check the polls on this one, but I suspect I’ll be going with Gundogan.

– Well an eventful six day double gameweek with more than a few surprises along the way. Five successive home defeats for Liverpool, Man City’s central defenders chipping in with goals as they sail on at the top, neighbours United play out two bore draws and losing their way in the fog, Chelsea now look like the iron curtain, Sheff Utd grab a rare win, and Gareth Bale is top FPL points scorer of the week !!
– It was a week where the big triple captain contenders all underwhelmed with Bruno Fernandes, Salah and Calvert Lewin all blanking twice and Kane’s solitary goal proving best of the bunch amongst the popular big four. So with even Kane only adding only 8 extra points over standard captainers, it was victory for the bench boosts over the triple captains.
My GW26 score and rank:
– 116 points ( no hits ) including 14 extra points from bench boost. A good spread of points with six players chipping in with double figure returns, four of them in defence. Kane 16, Son 14, Shaw 12, Rudiger 12, Martinez 12 and Stones 10 the stars of my week.
Geek Note: I don’t usually put the points scored but I’ll make an exception for 116 points!
– That’s now 18 green arrows in the last 20 weeks, and a very significant rank rise this week, up from 46k to 16k. Absolutely delighted to make up such ground in one week and come out of the double gameweek in such a strong position.
My GW26 talking points:
– It was perhaps an underwhelming bench boost contribution of 14 points. I have seen a few “cheat” bench boosts with premium players on the bench for cosmetic effect. But the true bench boost is the four worst players you would not have otherwise included in your starting line up. For me, that was my three Leeds players who only played once in the double gameweek and who were kept in reserve as they play in GW29. It was a gamble throwing them all in for a single game v Villa. A lot is being made of a failed Leeds bench boost. But remember that most people bench boosting three Leeds, had targeted the proceeding double gameweek for Leeds and had 45 points off the popular trio the week before including captain. So over a two week period, I view triple Leeds as a great success.
– It was pleasing to see my GW25 wildcard bear fruit, a chip used to set up the double gameweek. I brought in Rudiger and Shaw who both chipped in with double clean sheets, and Areola already returning two clean sheets since joining my team. Rudiger recording clean sheets against both Man Utd and Liverpool was a great result for me and a great differential too. Luke Shaw seems to have nailed down that starting place and is arguably Uniteds biggest attacking threat too.
– All my three Man City players only started one game and warmed the bench in the other. Pep roulette is now in full swing. Only 18 points between my sky blue trio over the two games. A disappointing 2 points from Cancelo who flatters to deceive. John Stones matched Dias in finding a precious goal and the fact he was benched v Wolves didn’t prove costly as City conceded. The seemingly impregnable City defence breached by both West Ham and Wolves !! Is double defence still the answer or do we look to double attack, particularly with Salah and Fernandes struggling ??
– Kane and Son brought in 30 points. Spurs looked back to their best in trouncing Burnley but much less impressive v Fulham, but across the two games, both Son and Kane could easily have walked off with monster hauls. I am definitely looking to hold both through a favourable fixture run.
– I am not in a hurry to offload the misfiring Salah or Bruno. I can see the lure of a Kevin de Bruyne, but I am happy with my three city combination and experience tells me that sellers of Bruno and Salah will almost certainly be punished. They are going nowhere.
– A gameweek is equally about the key threats to your rank that you don’t own. The heavily bought Harvey Barnes was my second biggest danger and we know how lucky I was to dodge that bullet as he limped off in the first game. My biggest rank threat was Calvert Lewin who, as a template based manager, I was very uncomfortable not owning v Southampton and West Brom. My only route to get him would have been a -8 hit involving selling Watkins, and switching Son to Harvey Barnes. I was still tempted, such was my concern as it took my well outside my risk model with his huge popularity amongst elite managers. I was 24 points up on not doing that deal. So a huge swing in resisting it. Calvert Lewin and Barnes could have completely wrecked my week. Two huge bullets averted.
So what next ??
– I have one free transfer and 0.2M in the bank.
– I am in the unusual position of having used all my “chips” with 12 gameweeks still to go. It’s been very different this season with the biggest blanks and doubles having landed much earlier than normal. But in some ways, I now find it quite liberating to be able to now play “ a normal game “ without any chip planning getting in my way. I feel like I have played the chips in a very positive way that have projected me well up the rankings. I have points on the board. The pressure is on others to match with their chips and I can now just play my normal game without having them hovering in my thoughts.
The big blank is near:
– Having just had the biggest double gameweek of the season, our focus now shifts to the upcoming biggest “blank” gameweek of the season in GW29, when only four games take place, only eight out of twenty teams have a fixture. Every transfer we make now is with GW29 in mind.
– Those with a free hit still available have the option to use it in GW29 to put out a full team of eleven players. I don’t have that luxury.
– I currently have seven players for GW29 having kept a sharp focus on it in planning for the blanks and doubles. I have Kane and Son for Spurs, Martinez and Watkins for Villa, and a Leeds triple up of Bamford, Raphina and Dallas. I also have Areola at second keeper as an alternate to Martinez if required.
– I am happy to run with just nine players in GW29. What I don’t want to do is to rip my team up for one small and potentially low scoring gameweek, by ditching the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Salah and my Man City trio, as these are players I definitely want beyond GW29. There are huge dangers in offloading them for one week only. If I sell Bruno at my personal sale price of 11M, it will cost me 11.6M to get him back. If I sell Salah at 12.4M, it will cost me 12.6M to get him back. If I sell Gundogan at 5.8M, it will cost me 6.2M to get him back. Selling key players I might not be able to afford straight back makes no sense at all.
– Therefore, my only route to getting nine players on the pitch will be to lose Rudiger and Shaw, the stars of my double gameweek, who I don’t have the same value tied up in. I also have no value tied up in Stones. So I can afford to trade them all very short term, to put nine players out in GW29, and get them back quickly from GW30 onwards.
– My planned transfers for GW29 will be a Brighton defender v Newcastle, and maybe Coufal for Westham v Arsenal. I can then run with nine players and be in a strong place to get my strongest eleven back quickly and have a strong team to compete with GW30 wildcarders.
– My initial thoughts are to roll the transfer this week in GW27, transfer out one defender in each of GW28 and GW29, giving me the option of bringing them both back in GW30 with 0.2M cover in the bank. I can also maybe take -4 and do a mini wildcard of three changes in GW30 if I am carrying over into GW29. Of course other injuries can impact on those plans. I could also bring in an extra defender in GW29, as even a -4 effectively becomes only a -2 if bringing in a player for another who has no game.
My GW27 plans and captain:
– I don’t want to sell any of my GW29 players. I don’t want to sell my premium players I have value tied up in. And I don’t see an advantage to effecting any of my planned defender moves this week as my two Man City defenders have a double gameweek and Rudiger has a favourable has every chance of shutting down Calvert Lewin who I will me more comfortable taking on, especially when Watkins plays Wolves. I could move Luke Shaw on in preparation for GW29. But it’s not going to improve this weeks line up. I might benefit from price rises by holding Rudiger and Shaw an extra week. So I am likely to roll the transfer and then make my two planned GW29 moves over the following two weeks. I would then aim to go into GW29 carrying over an extra transfer.
– I have seen Bruno Fernandes on a few benches this week but I will keep him in my eleven. You simply don’t bench your best premium players, regardless of fixtures. Raphina will sit at first sub and Dallas will be my defender cover for my back three. I can see Raphina being an even better version of Soucek and killing me from first sub.
– Captain is tricky because I really like the fixture of Kane v Palace, and Salah v Fulham. But even though there are risks of Man City players not getting two games and one of those games is Man Utd, I currently favour Gundogan. I will be keeping a close eye on the polls
