A change of format

After giving it some thought I’ve reverted back to the format that I used last season which I think was simpler and easier to get all the required information to make a decision into 1 table.

If you just want a quick transfer suggestion I’ve given these at the end if you want to skip all the preamble.

Stats definitions:

I’ve firstly ordered the teams by what I think is their defensive strength based their goals conceded, xG conceded and the shots per game conceded. These stats are for 19/20 only. After 5 games it’s worth bearing in mind that they are distorted by fixtures and a small data size.  You can see the rank of each stat mentioned above in the first 3 columns.

The stats after that are their:

My suggested defender for that team. I’ve tried to take into account what I think is an appropriate price for the team as well as their attacking and points potential. The table then shows their value and current 19/20 PPM

The likely starting GK for the team with the same price and PPM next to them

A bookies odds for a clean sheet for GW6. The lower the better obviously.

The fixture ease rank. The team facing the easiest attacking teams over the next 6 gameweeks is ranked 1. See our fixture ease article

Prices are as of Wednesday 2nd October

The Schedule

If you want access to copy and paste the schedule here’s the google spreadsheet link which I’ve set out differently if you want to sort different columns. Just go File> make a copy to get your own version

The teams are ranked by defensive strength only. Fixtures are not factored in.

Transfer suggestions for GW8

Here I trying to find a combination of defensive strength, a good next fixture and fixtures beyond that for me this week there are 4.

Man Utd

As I said last week for Leicesters clean sheet Newcastle are probably the best entry point for a defensive transfer in.  Man Utd can consider themselves unfortunate for just the 2 clean sheets so far given their underlying defensive stats.  Maguire looks the best option after Wan Bissaka missed out on Monday through illness.

GW8 NEW (A)
GW9 LIV (H)
GW10 NOR (A)
GW11 BOU (A)
GW12 BHA (H)
GW13 SHU (A)
GW14 AVL (H)

Man City

Otamendi is now fairly certain to get a run at £5.5m and is definitely the best option. Other than the GK the others all have some risk element.

GW8 WOL (H)
GW9 CRY (A)
GW10 AVL (H)
GW11 SOU (H)
GW12 LIV (A)
GW13 CHE (H)

Burnley

GK Pope is the best for me.  Pieters has by far the best PPM but has probably been fortunate to get the assists he has

GW8 EVE (H)
GW9 LEI (A)
GW10 CHE (H)
GW11 SHU (A)
GW12 WHU (H)
GW13 WAT (A)
GW14 CRY (H)

Everton

Up until the City game Everton’s underlying defensive numbers were ok but Digne’s attacking numbers weren’t last seasons.  Volume wise he’s still better than last season though and the overall numbers for last season don’t seem so far away as to be unobtainable.

GW8 BUR (A)
GW9 WHU (H)
GW10 BHA (A)
GW11 TOT (H)
GW12 SOU (A)
GW13 NOR (H)

The fixture ease schedule for defenders and GKs

Here’s a graphic where the teams are ranked by the ease of the attacking teams they face over the next 6 gameweeks.
