GW23 Review

Yesss! Finally I’m back into the top 10K! My feeling is especially good since I went with my gut and captained KDB despite the double gameweek options with the super high EO. KDB could have easily scored more but to be fair, I was also a bit lucky with the Watford attack’s very low returns so all in all I’m very pleased.

GW24 Preview

We are on the verge of the next phase of the season, and probably the most significant one, where most of the double and blank gameweeks take place. So if you have a lot of ground to make in your mini league, or in order to get to your desired OR, don’t worry. There are loads of points to be gained! You only need a decent plan (and some luck won’t hurt as well.. 😉)

Chip wise, my thinking atm is to FH GW27 and GW30, TC GW26 and WC + BB whenever a decent double GW is announced later in the season. But it is all up for a change. I don’t feel like I must set a definite chips plan at the moment, as doubles and blanks are not set yet (although many Twitter accounts suggest a probable fixtures outcome. I recommend to follow Ben Crellin if you haven’t already). In addition I still hold 1 WC and 2 FH so I feel like I could adapt my team for anything when the time comes.

Meanwhile, I look at my squad for GW24 and I like it a lot. Especially KDB whom many seem to consider bringing for just one week in order to captain, and I don’t have the headache of considering whether it’s worth it or not. I am also content with my 2 DGW assets for gw25 (DDG and Ronaldo), whom I believe to be the best as things stand.

Transfers

As mentioned, I like my team. I could basically save a transfer. But I own Rudiger who blanks 3 times in the next 4, and considering Raphinha could be injured (and actually anyone else could be missing due to COVID these days), I prefer to strengthen my squad now already and not wait for the next GW.

I don’t see many interesting options. The only 2 I consider are Digne (whom I mentioned last GW already) and Dalot. The latter I consider, to be honest, just because of his double GW25. I think Digne is far superior, but the DGW25 fixtures for Man Utd are just so good defensively wise. Is he going to play them both? He seems pretty nailed on atm. I assume though that I’ll end up with Digne as I don’t want to be stuck with 2 Man Utd defenders and there are no spare transfers to make in this crucial phase of the season.

Captain

As mentioned above, I’m thrilled to be having De Bruyne (KDB) and look nowhere else for the captaincy. Brentford’s defence is super leaky and I can see City scoring 5-6 past them easily. The only risk is that KDB might “leave” the goals and assists to his friends, who are fairly capable of doing the job themselves. Nevertheless, I’ll take my chances as I think he is the standout captain this week.

As a side note – it is a good week to go with a differential “gut captain”, as I expect the captaincy choices to be very diversified, so you won’t get too hurt if your captain disappoints.

transfer summary: Likely Rudiger to Digne

I made an early transfer this week (not quite sure why), but anyway I moved Alonso to Digne. I’ve got 1.8m itb and my team is as set out below. My plan is to dead end this team in 27, ahead of a wildcard in 28.

My key issue in 27 is my strikers – Antonio has wolves and my Watford duo Manchester United. I’m willing to take hits to get extra games/better fixtures.

So I’m likely to go Dennis to Edouard, Palace’s fixtures are lovely, though some rotation risk, and they play Norwich this week – he’d come in for Saka and Saka will then cover a Salah no show. Further Palace Plus double in 26 – I know Watford double too, but this gameweek has taught everyone that doesn’t necessarily count for much!

Captain Cancelo, it worked in gameweek 18, hopefully lightning strikes twice!

I can see Bowen might be popular, but that’s too many West Ham eggs for me as I already have Antonio and Dawson playing. Good luck 🤞

transfer summary: Likely Dennis out to Edouard

Gameweek 23 review:

I covered my Gameweek in more detail in my first “wildcard draft” article but having now finally concluded the 15 day marathon, I came out with just three “returners” in Jota, Rudiger and Foster, the latter clean sheet in the final game very welcome in what was a very low scoring Gameweek for most of us. The 16 attackers rated most likely to score in GW23 all didn’t !!

It was probably my best starting eleven of the season on paper. It certainly didn’t work out that way.

That first Watford clean sheet of the season also meant I could forget the De Gea points at first sub which Foster managed to match.

My decision to captain Dennis over King didn’t prove costly in the end, with both blanking and Watford failing to score and yielding just one point between them in a double gameweek of Norwich and Burnley. Typical FPL and a good example of what double gameweek hysteria can do to us.

I recovered some of my losses with that Foster clean sheet and ending up down from 140k to 151k. So a long frustrating gameweek which we are all ready to put behind us.

My wildcard update:

I pulled the wildcard trigger on the back of 8 red arrows in 11 weeks from a previously lofty position of 30k at GW12, with a view to trying to inject some much needed momentum and get my season moving back in the right direction.

I had Rudiger, Livramento and Keane all out, although the latter two now appear to be restored to the first team. I also wanted a “two premium” structure to quickly bring back Mo Salah and also be able to cover the double GW25 for Man Utd, something I couldn’t do without the wildcard. I did bank on Salah being back from
Afcon earlier but I do now have a structure to reintroduce him as well as tackle the Utd double.

I can also jump off my double Watford attack, and bring in the likes of Laporte and Digne as well as other differentials. Doing all of that together gives me the opportunity to attack the upcoming gameweeks.

The key questions on wildcard:

When to bring Mo Salah back ?

Bruno Fernandes or Ronaldo for Manchester United’s double GW25 ?

Jota or Robertson for that 3rd Liverpool spot ?

Who are the best keeper combinations ?

Who are the best low ownership differentials to try and make some rank gains ?

The changes :

My latest draft has EIGHT squad changes to my original GW23 squad. It has just two doublers in GW25 which has just one extra game, but a potential NINE doublers ( after post wildcard transfers ) in GW26 which has four extra fixtures.

My plan is to have 15 “nailed starters” for maximum flexibility and to take advantage of fixtures.

Players out – Foster, Livramento, Keane, Rudiger, Trossard, Raphinha, Foden, Dennis

Players in – Ramsdale, Laporte, Digne, Kilman, De Bruyne, Martinelli, Eduard, Ramsay

Here is my latest draft :

Fantasy Premier League Team Tips GW24

Premium hopping :

When to bring back Mo is a tough call. I never expected him to go the distance at Afcon. He is the best player in the game and I want him back very soon. There must be doubts about him starting GW24 and he is not likely to be heavily owned or captained. My polls and research estimate that 30-35% of engaged managers will likely own him in GW24, mostly those already holding him, increasing to 70-75% in GW25, and 90-95% by GW26.

My plan is to use the wildcard as an opportunity while Salah’s ownership is low enough not to hurt, to take a one week “punt” on Kevin De Bruyne v Brentford and put the armband on him. Captaincy will be very split this week between Bowen, Jota, Ronaldo, Bruno, Cancelo, Foden, Kane, Trent etc. it’s a great opportunity for a one week play on probably the stand out captain of the gameweek.

Then my big decision is whether to move KDB to Salah GW25 or not.

I have Ronaldo in place for the Man Utd double gameweek in GW25. But ultimately I want my two premiums to be Salah and Kane, who has three doubles to come and seems bang in form and back to his best.

I could save a move from Ronaldo down the line by selecting Kane now. That means playing a bold move on KDB and Kane this week. Then moving KDB to Bruno to cover the GW25 Man Utd double, and then Bruno to Salah in GW26, giving me my desired two premiums of Salah and Kane ready for Spurs double gameweek and Liverpool double gameweek in GW26.

Selecting both KDB and Kane this week is bold. But it commits me to waiting to GW26 on Salah, and I am not sure I have the stomach to wait that long. I can see the demand for Salah taking off quicker than we anticipate. Going without a tired Salah this week is one thing. Waiting to GW26 is a big thing to commit to. This is Mo Salah.

My current plan is KDB straight to Salah GW25, before Mo’s price climbs too much. It could price me out if i wait. By getting Mo in GW25, I can act quickly on a price move. It does mean trying to book in a GW26 transfer of Ronaldo to Kane. Not ideal premium hopping in my quest to have Salah and Kane in place.

Yes I could just get Salah and Kane now, but I miss the KDB opportunity and I don’t cover the heavily owned Bruno or Ronaldo in GW25. Owning at least one looks essential as they will both be heavily captained.

Other big decisions:

I am going Jota over Robertson. I fully get that Robertson is in sizzling form and outscoring both Salah and Trent. And that the return of Salah and Mane could take minutes off Jota, especially with Diaz also in the mix. But Jota is explosive too and doesn’t need 90 mins. His ownership will be over 100% including captaincy. He faces a brittle Leicester team and it’s probably a step too far currently with my risk based approach to the game.

I think Ramsdale and Sanchez are probably the best value keeper combination who compliment each other on fixtures. They both have doubles. I might still go there to free up 0.5M. Having two 5.1M keepers in De Gea and Ramsdale is not ideal. Ramsdale has great fixtures, double gameweeks and only has to make one save and break wind to get full bonus points. When he blanks in GW25, De Gea has his double of Southampton and Brighton both at home. When Ramsdale also blanks in GW27, De Gea plays Watford. Ramsdale has a tasty double in between.

The Man City defence is the best in the league. Everyone has Cancelo so the opportunity to gain comes from the double up with Laporte who has started the last nine fixtures. His ownership is also very low and he has returned in each of his last EIGHT games !! Lucas Digne also has very low ownership, great fixtures and doubles to come and has licence to attack now. Kilman is a less sexy but far more secure route than Ait Nouri to a very strong Wolves defence that double in GW26 and probably GW27 too. He has played every game. That’s what I need from my 5th defender.

Bowen is in top form and highly template and an obvious pick. West Ham have no doubles and fixtures toughen soon so I don’t want any more West Ham exposure. Martinelli has two blanks coming up but is very attacking, has a great GW26 double and great fixtures ahead. The enabler is currently Ramsay with those villa fixtures.

As someone who has used one free hit, GW27 looms as a potential problem as I will have three Liverpool players who blank in GW27, as do Arsenal. Free hitters can load up on Arsenal so I do have some hesitation. But it’s a great GW26 Arsenal double. Rather than have ten players, I might consider a one week GW27 switch of Salah to Bruno to ensure 11 starters and cover the Man Utd v Watford fixture which will be heavily attacked with free hitters and going without Bruno or Ronaldo will again be dangerous.

The decision of Ronaldo over Bruno Fernandes is not easy either. Bruno smashed the last United double but was aided by a Martinez howler. He looks much better. And Ronaldo is snatching at chances. But Ronaldo is spending twice as much time in the box as Bruno, taking tons more shots and remains the explosive pick.

Ronaldo will move to Kane, in GW26 if I can when Kane has a double, followed by Leeds away. I do want to retain one Watford attacker as they are heavily owned as a legacy of the last Gameweek and they double in GW26 and possibly GW27. King looked lively at Burnley. Edouard is a gamble but he is in form and now plays Norwich and Brentford followed by a double gameweek. He has the fixtures and the form too.

I was previously on Broja as an enabler but a knee injury casts doubts over his place. I might revert to Broja instead of Edouard and cover the Palace attack with Gallagher instead and select him over Ramsay. Or Cornet instead of Gallagher in that scenario who has loads of games to play.

The sacrifice for a two premium team of Salah and Kane when I get there, is losing Foden and carrying no city attacker from GW25. Foden has just THREE returns in the last FOURTEEN games which is not what we want from a player who has no upcoming doubles and will he heavily rotated as the Champions League and cups start to bite and if City have the title wrapped up early.

Planning risks:

I am aware I have a lot of planned moves after the wildcard. Making any sort of plan has been punished this season and sent FPL managers down dark alleys they have found it hard to extradite themselves from. But postponements seem under control, Covid cases are reducing, and I am hoping that my game of planning ahead around fixtures can flourish again after this seasons weekly fire fighting sessions have not been conducive to managers who love to plan ahead.

I am hoping that a settled defence and squad can allow me to hop around the next 2-3 weeks as planned and get me on to Salah and Kane whilst taking advantage of that Man Utd double gameweek

A word on “chips”:

I plan to navigate GW27 without a chip, and free hit in GW30 if it’s a big blank. Only three matches currently survive with the premier clubs kept apart in the cup draw so the number of games on quarter finals weekend could potentially be small. I can survive GW27 with 10-11 players including a few doubles. That GW30 blank seems the bigger priority. Having no late wildcard or free hit will make things too to set up the big doubles at the end but it is what it is.

I fully expect to triple captain Salah in GW26 when he has Norwich and Leeds both at home. The bench boost I prefer to play when Man City have a double gameweek which reduces the Pep risks to Man City rotation in a single sucking away my bench players. Man City progressing in the cup will now create that double.

Expect more changes:

I fully expect more twists to come and my team to change so check out my Twitter account which will be updated at least an hour before the Tuesday deadline.

Captain likely on De Bruyne

Costas has used none of his chips

Feels like this GW took ages…. well it actually did! Thankfully Foster got the same points as De Gea so I got that one right! Unfortunately I had Davies second bench and Coufal third so a 6 point difference would have made my arrow a green rather than a 13k red! Every decision counts!

So, my WC is delayed as I have triple Man United and Trossard so I will see through DGW25 with this lot although I want to change the entire team!

…. then we have DGW26 where I will be targeting Salah Robbo and a couple of Arsenal players! so WCing at 26 not an option as well!

… blank GW27 for some DGW27 for other teams screams Free hit!

SO the plan is to prepare the team for gw26! Robbo, Salah, Tierney and Lacazette/ Smith Rowe, free hit gw27 and WC gw28 💪🏻

GW26 is ideal for a bench boost as well as my single gameweek players have good games and I want to get the BB over before the WC as I wont be continuing with a balanced squad! This hinders me from TC salah! If Man U did not look so bad I could have TCed Ronaldo in gw25, but now I will have to wait for another opportunity

Transfer Summary: Keane out to Robertson in and captain Foden!
