Introduction

This is part 4of the FPL managers who contribute to the FFGeek site with good histories who show their teams each week. This will give people a feel for what other managers are doing. It’s a fairly informal thing with no obligation on anyone and these teams may change at anytime before the deadline without further notice. It won’t cover transfers in real time either. It’s just to give an idea of the trends for the week no more.  The teams are shown as their “final-ish” teams so they could change.  Where they have twitter accounts I have shown this and they may update them there or on our Slack Channel which is part of our subscription Patreon site but this is not guaranteed

Rick Porter

Rick’s last 4 seasons overall ranks were 29k, 1k, 30k and 2k.

GW2 points: 47 (FPL average 59), Total points: 120, Overall Rank: 1,779k,  red arrow: 1,141k,  Team Value: £100.1m

That was a bit of a disaster. Let’s start with the good… four of my defenders picked up either an attacking return or a clean sheet, which is great. Mitrovic grabbed two goals and full bonus and my captain choice wasn’t a complete let down.

Unfortunately, when two players who are owned by 20-30% of managers score seven goals between them, you’re going to have a bad week if you don’t own at least one of them – especially right at the start of the season where every point counts for a lot. I didn’t own either and my plummeting rank reflects that. Many other semi-popular scorers like Ings, Mane and Bamford who contributed to this record-breaking gameweek were also absent from my team, so I had very few players picking up the slack. Instead I had Fernandes, Salah and Werner as my premium, but ineffective, choices.

Essentially, after a good GW1, a poor GW2 has balanced me out as bang average.

Issues

Looking at my team, the problem areas are becoming more apparent. My Southampton defensive double up isn’t as capable as I thought it would be, Doherty is looking very expensive considering he’s obviously still finding his place in the team and, lastly, I have an Saint-Maximin who is flagged as an injury doubt.

I’m not too worried about Fernandes. We know he’s class and it’s only been one game. Werner looks sharp, and is causing more trouble than his points show, but this week marks the end of my planned transfers so he has one more match to impress properly before he’s swapped for one of the emerging bargains.

Wildcard?

There are lots of Wildcards being activated. Some out of frustration, others to pick up team value at a time when prices are changing quickly. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t dabbled with my own potential Wildcard team. You know… just to see what it would look like…

In the end I decided it would be more useful later when I have more data or if COVID causes issues to the schedule. Besides, if I’d not removed Son for Bruno this week then hitting the Wildcard button probably wouldn’t even be a consideration, so I doubt I’ll be playing it just yet.

Transfer

The plan was always to bring in De Bruyne for Aubameyang this week. De Bruyne looked predictably sharp so my plan remains intact. The transfer was made early to catch the price increase.

Captain

I’m on De Bruyne at the moment, but I may switch to Werner.

GW2 Review

I wasn’t particularly looking forward to the gameweek from my teams point of view, with a lot of players playing each other, and GW1 had already been bad for me. I also rolled a transfer as I wanted the flexibility this week.

Things didn’t get much better after the WBA vs Everton game seeing rivals getting big points, so I was fearing the worst.

Things got a bit better though. Mitrovic’s 12 points was very welcome and keeping faith in Son paid off with 24 points. Captain Auba only got the assist, but I guess that’s better than nothing and I only considered Salah apart from Auba for captaincy. Clean sheet from TAA was the only other return (KWP assist balanced out by conceding so many). This had got me up from 2.7m to 1.4m ish by Sunday night but I was back down to 2.1m by the end of the gameweek with KDB being pretty well owned.

So it felt better as a gameweek, and a 600k rise is always welcome, although I’m still at 2.1m rank for now but swings of 1m aren’t uncommon at this stage.

GW3 Transfers/Captain

I had planned an Aubameynag to De Bruyne/Sterling transfer this week and that went in Monday evening to catch the price rise. My other concerns were Vinagre not starting, Saint Maximin going off with an ankle injury, Adams seemingly unable to find the net despite great chances and underlying stats and Doherty.

The injury to Marcal means I’ve delayed action with Vinagre here in the hope he will start. I certainly want Wolves defensive (and ideally attacking) coverage for their great run of fixtures. I decided my 2nd FT was Saint Maximin out for Foden or Podence.

This was a tough call but I went with Foden in the end. I’ll give Adams another couple of weeks as he plays Burnley and WBA next. If he doesn’t return and I lose more value it’ll be tough but as I said before his attacking stats are good, just isn’t finding the net at the minute so hopefully points are due.

Captain is between Werner and De Bruyne. Werner does have the dream fixture but I’m hesitant given he hasn’t returned yet. That and reports of Ndidi being injured for Leicester means I’ve swayed towards De Bruyne. I’m hopeful for returns from both though. If not, a Werner to Jimenez move could be on the cards for many managers.

Good luck all

Chris Tucker

Chris’s last 3 seasons overall rank were 41k, 17k and 1k

GW2 points: 44, (FPL average 59), Total points: 107, Overall Rank: 2,921k, red arrow:  1,540k,  Team Value: £99.9m

After a gameweek in which everything that could go wrong seemed to go wrong (Son to Bruno … my bad), I had the overwhelming urge to wildcard. The fact is that I’m just not overly enamoured with my team, especially the defence.

I think the only thing that stopped me from pushing the wildcard button in the end is that most of my team has reasonable fixtures this week. I can’t see key targets, such as Justin and Calvert Lewin, exploding and so I will probably use the week to gather more information prior to a wildcard. I hope I don’t regret the delay.
I did make the early move of Aubameyang to De Bruyne. I think, however, that the City man will be my vice captain as I can’t look past Werner’s peach of a fixture.
Best of luck to you all!

I have two free transfers this week. I have used one to bring in De Bruyne for Aubameyang and will probably used the second in defense after the pressers. Captaincy is a choice between De Bruyne and Werner but I am backing the Belgian to score big at home. Alli is someone I want to get rid of asap but I guess that’ll have to wait for a week given there are issues elsewhere especially on the bench. Good luck everyone and hope you al have a great week!

GW 2 Review

GW2 started in fine fashion with newly transferred in Rodriguez picking up 13 points alongside teammate DCL’s hattrick (17 points). By Saturday night my OR was in the top quarter of a million. Two days later, however, it had fallen by over a million. It just goes to show how tight the overall ranks are.

Captain Aubameyang chipped in with an assist (10 points), Trent got a cleanie and Taylor got an assist, giving me a total of 56 points just below average.

I was hoping to get a better look at Havertz but he was taken off when Chelsea went down to ten men. But he got to play in the League Cup this week netting a hattrick which will do his confidence the world of good.

Werner set up a pen which Jorginho missed so it may be the case that Tino will get to take the next one.

Vardy did not score in Leicester’s 4 goal salvo and it could be that Barnes is a better option at the Foxes and certainly much better value.

Transfers

Aubameyang and Vardy -> KDB and Jimenez for a 4-point hit

Arenal’s fixtures are turning for the worse and De Bruyne looked immense against Wolves. He is on penalties and set pieces. It’s early days but he seems to be playing in a more advanced role.

Jimenez was in my early draft team and he was always going to join my team.

I don’t often take hits but I want to get in early to Wolves’ fixtures and there are other transfers I want to make to get the spine of my team sorted. Taking a hit allows me to make all the transfers a GW earlier.

Captaincy

It is tough one this week. De Bruyne and Man City look great and Leicester’s defence is weakened without Ndidi. I currently have my armband on him.

However, Werner is up against WBA who don’t look great at the back.

I get the feeling it could be a Saturday morning decision.

If I change my captaincy from De Bruyne I will say so in a tweet.

Current Strategy

My strategy has been to own one big hitter and spread the funds out amongst the rest of the team getting nailed on, mid-priced players with good fixtures. I have loaded up on Wolves, Everton and Chelsea assets which have the potential to score points and to go up in value.

My team looks solid and my OR is OK. All my chips are intact and I have picked up 0.5m team value doing this.

My captain options will be De Bruyne Werner and Jiminez.

It is risky going with only Trent and De Bruyne out of Liverpool and the Manchester teams and I will miss out on some hauls. However, I am gambling that it will bring me more points and raise funds to get a better team in the long run. We shall see!

Future Plans

I now have 3m burning a hole in my pocket so I will be looking to upgrade to a playing fourth midfield and play 343 as there are a lot of points to be gained in the middle. I am looking to bring in Foden/Barnes in GW4 and will be keeping an eye on them this weekend.

If I did buy Barnes my team structure would look like this

These are sell values (m)

4.5 / 4

7.5 / 5 / 5 / 5 / 4.5

11.5 / 8.4 / 7.5 / 7 / 4.5

9.5 / 8.5 / 7.1

This will give me the flexibility to jump on bandwagons and buy form players.

Transfer summary:  Aubameyang and Vardy out.  De Bruyne and Jimenez for a 4-point hit
