DGW28 review

A very strong GW for me. I halved my overall rank. For the first time this season, I have finished a game week in the top 10K. I am delighted.

I committed myself to playing GW29 without using my Free Hit back in GW24. Since them I have been loading my team up with blankers. The problem with that approach, is there is only a very small pool of players to pick and the need to hold onto players who I would normally let go of.

Unbelievably, this has, so far, actually helped me. I held Bowen for his hattrick, Watkins for both his braces and this game week Son hauled. Doughty, Regulion, Kaminski and Porro have all chipped in with points along the way. I have been lucky to hold onto to Foden, Saka, Palmer and Gabriel when I could have easily discarded them.

What next?

With all the cancelled fixtures, my GW29 team picks itself. My transfer will be Solanke out for Toney unless I hear any injury problems.

This gives me a team of 10 players as long as Regulion is fit. The fly in the ointment is Richarlison. I will wait until Spurs’ presser for further news. If he has a slight chance of playing, I will hold him. If not, I could just play with the ten players or I could take a hit for Maddison. That would give me for flexibility with my wildcard, as Spurs host Luton in GW30 and it could let me eke my team out until WC31.

Chip Strategy

I will WC in 30/1 to clear out the deadwood.

The rest depends on how the Cup matches transpire in GW29.

At present I am planning to Free Hit in 37 and Bench Boost in 34 but that could all change.

Captain

I cannot see past Son Heung-min as my captain, with probably Bowen as the vice captain.

Transfer summary:  Solanke OUT for Toney IN likely

Gameweek 28 review:

Well “double gameweek” fever was real, as the heavyweights of Bournemouth and Luton took centre stage, while the title race took a significant twist, six stoppage time goals kept up the trend of late late goals, and we had the comeback of the season in the final game !!

Klopp and Guardiola went into battle for the last time in the premier league, as the top two served up an entertaining game which finished 1-1. That result left the door wide open for Arsenal to spare Ramsdale’s blushes with a late goal to go top of the league in a 2-1 win. Spurs had a crushing 4-0 win at 4th placed Villa to close the gap on their victims. And two spot kicks saw Man Utd beat Everton 2-0.

The bottom two both lost precious 2-0 leads in stoppage time, Burnley drawing 2-2 at West Ham, and Sheff Utd drawing 2-2 at Bournemouth. Chelsea edged out Newcastle 3-2, Wolves beat Fulham 2-1, an own goal saw Brighton beat Forest 1-0, and Palace were denied in the last minute by Luton.

All FPL eyes were firmly on the two “doublers” as the heavily captained Solanke skied a penalty into someone’s back garden, and had a goal disallowed v Sheff Utd, before finally getting his goal v Luton

An astonishing 4-3 win for Bournemouth over Luton in the final game, from 0-3 down at half time, brought the curtain down on the gameweek in spectacular fashion.

Neither Luton or Bournemouth kept a clean sheet over the double, Carlton Morris blanked twice, and it was Outtara and Semenyo who were the surprise double gameweek stars.

My GW28 score and rank:

I had just 4/11 returners in a score of 67-4 = 63 points. But that was enough for a very decent rank rise.

Son and Palmer landed some healthy midfield points, Solanke managed a goal as captain and Illia Zabarnyi scored his first goal of the season in the week I brought him in !!

A rank rise this week from 200k to 165k. Just what the doctor ordered after a run of small red arrows. And I go into GW29 on a free hit with prospects of building on it.

My GW28 significant moments:

I captained Solanke, the popular choice. His penalty miss v Sheff Utd represented a huge 18 points swing when comparing the difference between a missed penalty and a goal with bonus points x 2 !! A costly slip indeed and costly to rank too based on an “effective ownership” of 160% at my rank level when I owned 200% of him. At least he did find a goal v Luton to bring in 16 captain points.

I took a -4 hit for two transfers, which could not have worked out better.

One was to take out Dan Burn who I would have started, to bring in a doubling Bournemouth defender who scored. Dan Burn conceded three goals and went off with a shoulder injury too.

The other part of my hit was to move De Bruyne to Son. An 11 point gain after Sons late points spree which saw him jump from 6 points to 17 points after the 90th minute. A huge points gain in the context of the gameweek.

I resisted doing Hwang to Kluivert instead of getting a Bournemouth defender, which would have seen me benching Palmer, which made me nervous. Palmer’s 13 point show, coupled with Son’s 17 and Zabarnyi’s goal meant my big transfer decisions certainly paid off.

A Ramsdale clanger wiped out my double Arsenal clean sheet, Haaland and Foden failed to punish those who sold them, Saka and Watkins blanked too, and of course Areola conceded early against Burnley after his 13 pointer was warming my bench last game.

So what next ?

We now have the biggest “blank gameweek” of the season as just FOUR fixtures are left intact due to the carnage caused by the quarter finals of the FA cup.

It’s going to be a very popular time to play the “free hit” chip to put a guaranteed 11 players on the pitch, though the four remaining games look underwhelming and don’t immediately scream “FPL points”. But at a time when many managers will be taking points hits to scrape 8-9 players together, there should still be rank gains to be had for free hitters, particularly against those unprepared managers with no free hit left and waking up to 3-4 players in their teams on Saturday morning.

Many are happy to run with 7-9 players this week and have at least been proactively moving in players in preparation, which allows them to save the free hit chip for a future double gameweek. GW34 and GW37 look like being significant double gameweeks ahead, where postponed cup fixtures will be mopped up. It’s expected we get confirmation of which fixtures go where very soon. The weekend fa cup ties will certainly make the position clearer.

It’s hard to see too many clean sheets this weekend, with no team rated more than 31% likely for a shut out. It looks like Son will be the most captained amongst the eight teams who do play, but if you’re playing catch up and want to take a risk, then perhaps Maddison or Toney will be the answer.

With just four players this week, I will be free hitting myself. The Free hit template looks very solid with little variation outside the most popular 8-9 players, but remember that a template free hit is still a differential against a large chunk of unprepared managers this week and those not fielding a full team.

After this weekend, we have a two week international break, before we embark on the “homeward run”. The last chance to refresh, before that late push for green arrows.
