Team structure

Fantasy football Draft

So firstly these are teams made up when you isolate 1 particular stat.  None is intended to be my actual team.  It’s just there to give you ideas for your team and provide some food for thought.

The players though are limited to the 150 players who were analysed in my EBook “a guide to FPL 2017/18”

That was done with a minimum points threshold although various other exceptions were dragged in.  It does mean that at the lower points range there are less options than at the top.  So there aren’t many £4.5m midfielders or defenders for example as many that made the threshold increased in price.  By definition new players to the league aren’t in the stats.

Some of the stats to don’t equate well with GKs so take them with a pinch of salt.

In order to give players of various prices and teams I’ve introduced a 1 player limit from each premier league team in the attacking and defensive positions.  The FPL team structure looks something like this

GK’s: £5.0m max

Defs:  2 premium.  1 around £5m and the other 2 at £4.5m

Mids:  1 premium 2 mid range.  1 cheap and 1 benchwarmer

Fwds:  2 premium and 1 cheap

That was adjusted depending on players picked.

In addition players had to have a reasonably strong chance of lining up in GW1

Consistency stat

In defence these were the players with the highest % of goals,  assists and clean sheets in their appearances

The attacking positions were the highest % of goals or assists within their appearances.  There was a 20 minute threshold to count as an appearance.

Alli would have appeared if it wasn’t for Kane.  Willian, Zaha and Phillips were actually behind Stanislas.   However the last midfielder I wanted to be under £6.0m

Fletcher didn’t qualify, he was just there as funds ran out.  Sanchez tends to do that to your team.  I had to go along way down to find Puncheon who you would have to question his ability to start

Value for money stat

Basically with this I relate their returns from last season on a per minute basis to their price.  There is a similar article I’ve done looking at this stat from a best and worst value basis

Interestingly Heaton still  seems reasonably good value.  There’s no doubt that Trippier is after his stellar finish to the season.  Daniels shows why I’ve seen him in quite a few drafts.  Kompany is an interesting one and perhaps distorted by relatively few appearances but alot of goals.  Lowton and Simpson are ok value but are a function of the dearth of £4.5 defenders in the sample.

The Stanislas of last season is definitely good value.  Unfortunately he is a serious injury doubt for the start of the season.  Willian is no surprise and benefits from Hazards early injury.  Phillips looks good value with some set piece responsibility.  Coutinho was a bit of a surprise and Shaqiri definitely was.

Up front no surprise about Jesus who was outstanding and even with the price rise still looks value.  Kane ‘s returns were so exceptional that he makes it.  Vokes was the cheapie surprise packet at the end of the season

Shots in the box stat

This stat which I get from whoscored.com.  It is one stat to think about in terms of goal threat and is on a per game basis

The GK stat was the amount of saves btw.

Alonso and Mawson were no surprise to me.  Mustafi was a little.

Sanchez clearly was no surprise especially as he played a number of games at striker.

Redmond was probably one of the most frustrating non converter of stats this season.  Alli as a support striker practically should be no surprise.  Stanislas was a surprise.  McArthur was one of the better £4.5m defs but seems unlikely to start.

This team showed how unlucky Aguero was and next season given gametime I can’t believe he will be so haphazard with his finishing.  Benteke was an interesting one and also gives us hope for this season especially with early fixtures.  Barnes  was a bit of a fill in.

Best fixtures

Here I’ve picked 7 defenders from the teams with the best opening GW1-6 fixtures from my fixture ease article.  I’ve then picked 8 attacking players again from the 8 teams with the best fixtures according to that schedule. In all cases I’ve selected the player who I think is the best pick.  No need to add anything it’s all self explanatory

So what does this mean?

This wasn’t meant to be anything more than throwing up a few players of interest focusing on particular stats in isolation.  I think it should be taken as food for thought as 1 stat in isolation doesn’t make a player.

There are 2 players who were in 3 of the teams.  They were Stanislas and Jesus.  Stanislas seems to be a fitness doubt and Jesus would be best as a CF rather than a RW.

A number of players featured twice.  Alonso, Trippier, Cedric, Kompany Kane, Coutinho , Philipps and Sanchez.

I also wanted to line up the players that were form and fixtures.  If I accepted that consistency, for this example, equalled form then the players to come from that would be limited to Jesus and Cedric.  Jesus needs some role clarification and Cedric is looking like he may have gametime issues
