FPL Wildcard

Wildcard activated

So I have been holding off playing the WC through 5 back to back red arrows and it feels weird to have finally activated it after a “rank-halving” GW 11. But looking at my team for the next few fixtures it also felt right, and I didn’t want to lose the grounds I finally gained.

Firstly, here’s the current draft. This, of course, is by no means the final one as not only am I still tinkering with the team combination, but there could also be important team news and updates over the international break to force me away from this draft!

Structure

So let’s get started. As you can see, I have tried to go with a few template players that I think are essential moving forward. Salah, Trent, Chilwell, James and Cancelo would fall under that bracket and are arguably fixture-proof if not rotation-proof. And given the rotation-risk especially over the busy festive fixtures, I have gone with a strong set of 13 players with 2 solid bench options always available as needed. For example, Emerson from Spurs is one such option (although I am 0.1 short of Reguilon).

A few specific player points

I debated selling Antonio given his upcoming fixtures but realized I would need him again around GW 16 albeit for a higher price. So I am just planning to bench him in GW 13 and 15 against City and Chelsea respectively where I would use the services of Emerson instead.

A similar rotation policy would be enforced on the in-form cheap mids Gallagher and Smith Rowe in the upcoming GWs. Son Wilson and Jota will start all GWs at least till GW 15 if they are still in the squad of course.

And finally, Guaita is the 4.5m starting keeper I have gone with as I think Palace is a much-improved defence these days and their upcoming fixtures do have the potential of a few clean sheets. So as you can see, this draft is flexible enough to field any formation from 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 5-4-1 or even 5-3-2 based on fixture difficulty, rotation and injury related issues.

Concerns

A few concerns I am still trying to think through:

  1. How to accommodate a United attacker (and who?) when their amazing run of fixtures start in GW 15.
  2. No City attacker doesn’t feel right and Foden is one option I am still debating (potentially for Jota, Wilson or Antonio).
  3. Is it worth going against Raphinha who has a high EO against me?

I do realize I am taking on a lot of benching headaches with this draft and I don’t doubt I will be wasting agonizing bench points over the next few GWs but at the same time it also offers great flexibility and some rotation-related security.

Summary of transfers

Bachmann out and Guaita in

Tsimikas out and Emerson in

Havertz out and Son in

Raphinha out and Jota in

Brownhill out and Smith Rowe in

Gray out and Gallagher in

Toney out and Davis in

Vardy out and Wilson in

Staying in the team

Foster, Cancelo, Reece James, Alexander-Arnold, Chilwell, Salah and Antonio

That’s it for now. I hope you all are having a safe and healthy international break. Cheers and good luck in GW12!
