Hi everyone and welcome to Player Picks!

After the success of the previous 2 seasons, Player Picks is back again for 2019-2020 with a fairly similar format. I’ve decided to pare back the stats from previous weeks picks so that they will just include an average for the season – hopefully this should make the article a little bit simpler. Otherwise I’ll be sticking to the same format of a Banker, Ace and Joker as I’ve followed in previous years.

As a reminder, the Banker is predominantly a fixture-based pick where I follow them for 4 weeks and average the score over that period. The Ace is a 1 week pick who I think will do well and would make an appealing Captain choice. The Joker is a differential pick with less than 10% ownership who I think might do well that week. For reference, the overall 2018-19 picks averaged as follows: Banker 5.22, Ace 6.11, Joker 4.92. Hopefully (with some help as you’ll see below) we can beat that this season. I’ll start to look at the 2019-20 averages a bit later in the season when there is more data.

This season I’m also going to add a ‘Key Fixture’ analysis to Player Picks. This is where I’ll pick one fixture for the gameweek in question which I think FPL managers should consider covering in their squad. I’ll look at previous meetings, bookies odds and form in this – it might be a fixture where we already have a Player Pick, it might not! There will still also be Twitter polls where the FFG Twitter Community have an opportunity to select players, but also new for this season is a contribution from the FFG Slack Channel where Patreon users will have chance to directly contribute to the weekly picks through the Player Picks forum. So without further ado, let’s get on with this weeks Picks!

FPL Gameweek 6 Player Picks

Banker (Picked by the FFG Slack Community) – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – ARS (11.0) – AVL/man/BOU/shu

BTW you can join the FFGeek Slack Channel for FPL discussion with members and contributors through our Patreon site

This week as the focus shifts towards moving funds from defence to up top, I’ve gone for 3 strikers who have each returned in every gameweek so far. Leading us off in the Banker slot is Aubameyang who was suggested by Collin, Paulo Cabarrao, Matty, Leo, Ian Synnott, Avishek, Shaun O’Connor, Mark Hughes and Contributor Costas on the Slack Forum this week. Quite the following! The Gabon international has played every EPL minute so far this season and has posted 5 goals and an assist across these. With strike partner Lacazette injured, his gametime looks secure (though we’ll watch Arsenal’s Europa League selection with interest) and the fixture list is certainly set fair for The Gunners, meaning that I’m sure his 22.8% ownership will rise over the next few weeks.

Ace – Sergio Aguero – MCI (12.1) – WAT

Probably no surprises here that Kun gets the Ace slot for this week. 7 goals and an assist across the first 5 gameweeks speaks for itself, not to mention the fact he’s a player with a season after season proven FPL track record. Managers should also be fairly relaxed about him being rotated this week as well, after he was left on the bench for The Citizens visit to Kharkiv on Wednesday. With the home team looking to bounce back after their surprise defeat at Carrow Road last weekend to a makeshift Norwich City, Aguero will surely be at the forefront of many managers captain thoughts. Can the little Argentine make it 6 returns in a row?

Joker – Callum Wilson – BOU (7.8) – sou

Believe it or not, there is a Premier League striker who has returned in all five matches and yet has already had 2 price drops this season and is only owned by 9.5% of managers. Step forward an ongoing FPL Nemesis of mine – Callum Wilson! Maybe it’s a personal thing – I think I’ve owned him for close to 20 gameweeks over the last couple of seasons or so and I believe he’s never scored for me. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t disappointed with his assists over the opening 2 gameweeks when I did own him this season, but sure enough I sold him in GW3 and suddenly he’s finding the net. Typical. Anyway personal thoughts aside, I think he’s good Joker shout this week – Bournemouth looked good in attack against Everton this week and although St Mary’s is always a tricky visit for any side, I think he’s got a good chance of a return this week. He’s possibly slightly over-performing his stats this season (3 goals/xG 2.37) but most of his key action has as expected been from inside the penalty box (with a 50% conversion rate from in here) so he’s certainly got his eye in so far.

Key Fixture Pick – Chelsea vs Liverpool (Sunday 430pm)

Odds – Chelsea 5/2; Liverpool – Evens; Draw 13/5
Clean Sheet – Chelsea 9/2; Liverpool 9/4
Selected Anytime Goalscorer Odds – Abraham 7/4; Willian 10/3; Salah 13/10; Mane 7/5 Firmino 9/5

The big Sunday late afternoon clash is my key fixture pick this week with table-topping Liverpool visiting Stamford Bridge. Both sides will be keen to bounce back after disappointing results in the Champions League in midweek and honours have been fairly evenly shared between them over the last few seasons. Liverpool won 2-0 at Anfield back in April in the last league meeting and have already defeated The Blues on penalties in the European Super Cup this season. Prior to these though, the Londoners had the edge with 2 wins and 3 draws across the league meetings in 2017 and 2018.

Traditionally these games have been fairly tight affairs, but with both defences flattering to deceive through the opening weeks of this campaign there may be some goals across a fixture that has only averaged 2.16 goals per league game across the last 3 seasons. Liverpool’s front 3 will as usual be heavily backed, with Mane and Firmino winning the points battle over Salah last weekend and all will once again fancy their chances against a Chelsea defence that’s yet to keep a clean sheet and shipped 11 goals so far this season.

There are some attacking options for The Blues as well though, with Tammy Abraham the stand out player for them so far. 7 goals in the last 3 games has certainly shown that he’s more than ready for the Premier League and with The Reds defence having made a number of uncharacteristic errors so far this season, it could be a good week for the young English striker. Elsewhere, 24.3% of managers will eagerly awaiting news of Mason Mount’s midweek ankle injury. It looked nasty at the time and it looks highly likely the in-form midfielder will miss this Sunday’s game. If he does miss out, there could be a start for 5.9m Callum Hudson-Odoi, a young midfielder with a lot of potential. We’re also waiting to see the best of Christian Pulisic though 7.4m does seem a lot for a player who has returned only 2 assists so far.

As for my prediction, I’m going for a 2-2 draw!

That’s all from me this week folks – good luck!
