GW 1

A decent start for me. With the cheapish prices and playing a 532, I could afford to have a very strong team.
I have tripled up on Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool, and also have Reece James in my side.
The price to pay is having Neto in my side and a very weak bench.
I really liked the look of City and Haaland looks an absolute beast of a player.
Arsenal impressed too. I sure Liverpool will come good soon.
It is the first time I have played a 532 formation.
The problem is the lack of options of 4.5m attackers apart from Andreas Pereira.

I was ridiculously pleased that Lavia played 90 mins even when Romeu being subbed off. I had read that they would share minutes. The icing of the cake was Dervisoglu, who I bought for his low ownership, not only got some minutes but got an assist. Having a playing cheap bench is great news and will avoid being pushed into an early WC.

Looking forward, I am going to roll my transfer and I expect to captain Haaland for his home tie against the Cherries. My only concern is how many minutes Alvarez gets as a possible sub for Haaland.

Transfer summary: Likely carrying over the free transfer

GW1 Review

63 points and a 2.7m rank. Last season I got over 100 and a 400kish rank so this is a bit disappointing. In reality though the main gap to most above me is just a lack of Chelsea or Arsenal clean sheet so isnt all bad. Salah captain, Haaland, Cancelo and Martinez were the returns.

My potential issues are Mount who was very disappointing with no real threat,  Double Liverpool clean sheet wipeout (but I trust this over the next few weeks) and Perisic who I kept in due to being on hols and not reacting to the benching rumours quick enough.

Nevertheless two frees and more options in GW3 is strong so I’m rolling.

Haaland captain and main dilemma is starting or benching Perisic. Pereira looked good going forward so currently starting him.

Transfer summary: Likely carrying over the free transfer

No Salah in GW1 – how did it go….?

A slightly tricky start to the season after the big decision for my team went close to as poorly as it could have gone. As a reminder, we chose to start without Salah for (primarily, but amongst others) the following reasons:

  • High expectations for other Liverpool players, specifically our selected trio of Trent, Robertson and Diaz, which meant their value couldn’t be ignored.
  • Faith in a Son/Haaland captaincy rotation

Our Liverpool trio plus captain Son combined for 14 points while Salah scored 24 for those who captained him. Therefore, we were always going to be on the backfoot this gamweek which means I am actually reasonably happy with the final score of 59 points.

More importantly, as an FPL manager, I always try to be focussed on the decision making rather than the results and I remain comfortable with the decision to not select Salah – this may surprise some of you. Aside from having faith in my Transfer Planner, I was content with choosing Son over Salah if I believed that he was a better captaincy pick in GW1. And the closer to the deadline we got, the more convinced that I was for this to be the case. The Southampton defence has been poor for a while now, so I felt there was more goals in that game for Spurs and Son is always likely to be involved.

Salah and Son actually both had an xGI (expected goal involvement =xG + xA) of 0.9, but Son was not able to take his opportunities – unlike him! Having said that, going against a proven FPL asset like Salah is always a risk and not owning him does open up the possibility of any gameweek being like this one. On another day, I could have come out on top, but I will just have to take weeks like this on the chin while he is not in my squad.

How about the rest of the squad?

My concern with selecting Arsenal players was the opening fixture against Palace (tough fixture in my model) so it was a relief to have returns from Gabriel and Martinelli. The centre back was a late selection in my squad as I ultimately decided to not take the risk of starting with Persisic, instead choosing my pick of the 5.0mil defenders and keeping 0.5mil in the bank. James and Cancelo performed the same trick of picking up two bonus points despite receiving a yellow card and I am happy with money being spent in defence.

I do have my concerns about the double Leicester goalkeeper situation, but we don’t need many points from them to justify their selections. Some save points and a single clean sheet in the next few fixtures would be enough. However, I could be tempted by a keeper change if the opportunity arises.

Not much to say about Haaland that hasn’t already been said, but it was a very enjoyable watching his performance on Sunday. He’s such an exciting addition to the league and I know my girlfriend (who’s from Norway) is absolutely buzzing to watch him every week.
