GW22 Review
Feels good to get another green arrow, and getting closer to a return to the top 10K.
This week my transfers were bitter-sweet, as I was lucky enough to bring Bruno in but unfortunately only gave him the vice-captain while Ronaldo got the armband.
I must also refer to my previous article in which I stated that I was likely to buy Moura if I decided to bring Ronaldo. I finally decided to pass on Moura due to the news which suggested that the double for Spurs might be called off, and that’s how I ended up with Bruno. I did tweet about it a few minutes before the last deadline so keep track of my Twitter if you want to find out my final move close to the next deadline.
GW23 Preview
Once again my final move will be determined only in the last moment before deadline (or actually 15 minutes before that. I have learnt my lesson 🤦♂️). A double gameweek for Villa and Leeds might happen and if so, I will be all over Villa assets (I already own Raphinha). Note that fixtures cannot be added to a gameweek after the deadline passes, so just wait as late as possible with your transfers and if no news come out you can be quite confident that this won’t be a double gameweek.
Transfers
So, as mentioned my move depends on the fixtures news:
If it’s a double gameweek for Villa and Leeds, I will almost certainly bring Digne for Rudiger. Then I will probably take a hit for another Villa asset, who might be either of Watkins, Coutinho, or Ramsey.
If it’s a single gameweek I might still go for Digne but I am more into getting a second City midfielder whom I can captain, most likely KDB or Sterling. The one to make way would be Bruno, despite his remarkable performance this last gameweek. I think he was pretty lucky and I just don’t like his position while Ronaldo is on the pitch.
Captain
My captain will be a city midfielder if it’s a single gameweek, and probably Raphinha if it’s a double.

Two strong back-to-back GWs have lifted my team up to 21K. That makes it 3 consecutive green arrows. I haven’t had 4 greens in a row all season so fingers crossed this time. I have adopted a new strategy lately and it has been working well for me. Namely don’t overthink FPL, focus on the coming GW and wait until about half an hour before deadline to make any transfers.
As it stands, I am going to roll my transfer. My team looks pretty solid and making a transfer won’t make much difference. I hope to get Salah back in my side around GW24 so holding the transfer facilitates that.
If, however, Villa do have a DGW in GW23, I am looking at buying Digne or Coutinho and giving them the armband.
There are many other options currently in my team: Cancelo, Trent, Foden, Jota or Bruno. I like the look of Trent presently.
My thinking may well change tomorrow as more information comes out.
Here is my team at the moment.
Good luck everyone and keep safe.

Rick Porter
Rick’s last 5 seasons ORs were 1k, 29k, 1k, 30k and 2k.
GW22 points: 64 -8 (FPL average 51) Total points: 1,401, Overall Rank: 54k, red arrow: 11k Team Value: £104.3m
Rick has used 1 Free Hit
A tough week, but I’m reasonably content with a small red arrow. After he was essentially declared fit to play, Ronaldo was always coming into my team as Captain. Bruno was never in my thoughts. His EO at my rank was 35%, Ronaldo’s was 110%. It was essential cover as far as I was concerned and those that captained Bruno deserve their points for their boldness.
If you think it was hard watching Bruno totting up goals and assists, imagine the damage if it was Ronaldo doing the scoring and you were a non-owner. I transferred in a doomed Son, took a -8 hit, had six players blank, suffered a spectacular captain fail, and still Bruno’s mega-haul only dropped me 11k. After the Son error and with plenty Free Hitting, my aim this week was simply damage limitation, so I’m seeing it as a success.
What next?
Planning is borderline impossible now, but I can still roughly gauge what needs to be done based on a few known facts. Unless there’s an injury, I know I’ll want Salah back next week and I also know I can’t afford him. Jota probably has an upcoming double so most likely Foden will get upgraded — which means I have to free up 0.8m minimum. The obvious places to downgrade are Alonso (because of upcoming blanks and I hate him) or Ronaldo (because he’s expensive and I hate him).
Transfer
So, I know what I need to do, and I know the ways it can be achieved… but any transfer decision will be a last minute call when I have as much info as possible. Assuming there are no doubles then my decision will be swayed by what rumours of postponements around at the time, but Alonso to Coady gets me the cash I need and seems sensible considering the solid Wolves defence. That said, if everything seems calm, I may keep the FT and make the moves next week.
Captain
Watkins if Villa double, Ronaldo or Trent otherwise.

GW22 Review
A really bad week unfortunately and a nasty red arrow undoing last week’s green and a little bit more, leaving me back closer to where I was in GW17. More bad decisions to blame unfortunately – this week it was taking -4 to bring in Ronaldo for the Captaincy. One of my unwritten FPL rules is not to hit in a yellow-flagged player and really this was really a case of a FOMO decision gone wrong.
Fernandes was certainly the player to have this week – a 40 point swing if you Captained him and fair play to everyone who brought him in. To be honest, I hadn’t even considered him – he’s showed no form since GW1 and there was a bit of fortune about his 2 goals from an xG of 0.3, but that’s Bruno all over. I was on the right end of him outdoing his stats on plenty of occasions last season so things have to balance off at some point. Maybe not considering him though is reflective of how my decision-making process has been flawed this season – it’s something I need to bear in mind moving forward.
As for the rest of my team, Cancelo and Trent did what they’ve been doing all season and at least my other transfer of Alexis McAllister brought in 9 points so overall my hit was actually a net gain of 4 points, but with my team missing the likes of De Gea, Kane and Maddison I was always going to end up sinking down the overall rankings.
It’s been a tough month in FPL for my team. The playing week to week game style has not suited the way I tend to play and I’ve struggled to adapt to this and find clarity in the late transfer decisions. Of course, my team having more flags than the UN hasn’t helped either, but I’ve managed my transfers so poorly over the last 4 weeks and the results, well they speak for themselves. The great thing in FPL though is that there is always another week. Here’s what I’m looking at for GW23.
GW23 Team
1 free transfer, £0.6m in the bank.
Thankfully this week looks a bit more straightforward. I’ve got 3 flags in my team – Duffy, Smith-Rowe and of course Salah. My transfer in will therefore address one of these and you might be surprised to learn that I’m going to sell Mo Salah this week for Kevin De Bruyne (KDB.) You’re probably thinking I’ve gone mad with Salah due to return for GW24, but there is method here and my buy back strategy is pretty straightforward – I’m going to Wildcard in GW24.
Again you might think this is a bit hasty, but I see a good opportunity here to gain back some ground. City have 3 fantastic fixtures coming up, there are going to be double gameweeks coming for several teams and it will mean I can react to this over the international window and it will also give me a chance to mass cull (with no hits) 6 of my team who have blanks over the next 3 weeks – my triple Brighton (how did I end up there?!); 2 Arsenals and Rudiger. Remember I also still hold both my Free Hit chips, so this leaves me less worry about negotiating what look to be the 2 major blanks – GW27 and GW30. It’ll also give me a chance to put a second playing goalkeeper on my bench for a bit of a flexibility with when I Bench Boost.
Back in GW17 this wouldn’t have been my ideal plan. I’d rather have been holding my second WC to GW31 to set up for the doubles after that. Things change however and looking at where my team has ended up I’ve no problem with a Wildcard around now. In fact I’ve done it between GW23 and 27 in 3 of the last 4 seasons so at least I’m used to it! I also have some reservations about the doubles from GW31 onwards – for example I can see City being well clear in the title race and Pep starting to rotate for the UCL with Liverpool in a similar position in 2nd thus possibly reducing how useful their assets are.
Back to this week anyway. KDB comes in then and he’ll get the armband this week. The only other change I might make is that if there’s a late double GW announcement on Friday (there’s nothing at the time of writing this at 6pm on Thursday) then I might hit in a second player for this – eg Raphinha or Coutinho. We’ll see!
Good luck for this week everyone – remember it’s a Friday deadline as well. Try and leave your transfers as late as you can folks and I’ll aim to get my team on Twitter around 6pm on Friday evening as I’m off work.
